Installing Ubuntu on iMac to play WC3?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Long story short, I'm stuck with a Mac OSX 10.8 installation and do not have my iMac's original DVDs to install 10.6, which is required to install WC3 and SC1. Then I thought I could install another OS! I don't want to pay for W7/W8, so why not linux?

I've never touched linux.

Is this something that'd be relatively easy? (Is this more appropriate for the Apple forum?)

Do you have any friend who has a 10.6 installation? You could log in to your Battle.net, download the game client, install the game on that friend's computer, patch everything, and then copy everything over to 10.8.

Or you could use Wineskin, I read.

Good luck.

Ubuntu is definitely a good choice for someone who has never used Linux before, but be warned that you may have more problems than if you installed Ubuntu on a standard (non-Apple) PC. Apple's firmware is notoriously buggy and often causes problems in this regard.

The best idea is probably to dual-boot OS X and Ubuntu until you get more comfortable with the system. You can use the standard Boot Camp utility built into OS X to install Ubuntu. From OS X's perspective, installing Ubuntu is exactly the same as installing Windows. There is an excellent install guide on Ubuntu's website that I highly recommend you read. It will walk you through the installation.

Yea, I'd make a ~100gb partition and dual boot the two OSs.

I wasn't sure if WC3 was one of those apps were you could simply drag & drop it; thanks for the idea. I'll see if it works with my girlfriend's macbook that's still on 10.6.

If not... I'll be back :p

^ instead of winebottler (not updated anymore i believe) check out PlayOnMac

it's built on Wine and if the game is popular (with the games you want to play are) it should be in the repository and will install an instance of the version of wine that has been tested and found to work best for that specific game. meaning a better over all performance for you

play on mac is a lot easier to use than straight wine for mac as well

Can you use PlayOnMac or WineSkin as an alternative method / rout? I know I have a lot of Windows Games ported to my Mac using WineSkin; not sure about the linux side of things. Or how about a Virtual Machine like VirtualBox?

You could just torrent 10.6, since you are looking to re-install everything anyways.

It is Free

It is not stealing as you made the original purchase

You own a mac

Solves your problem

No need to learn a new O/S

You have 10.8 DVD as backup if it goes wrong

P.s. doing a little research, the process might be a little more complex than installing Ubuntu but just remember after the Ubuntu install you still need to mess around with Wine.

    • The Trump administration doesn't want you to use OpenAI's GPT-5.6 without its approval by David Uzondu Image via @realDonalTrump (X) As OpenAI prepares the release of its next model, GPT 5.6, the White House has instructed the company to limit the distribution of the software to a small group of government-approved partners instead of the general public, as it has done with previous releases. According to The Information, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman sent an internal memo to staff on Thursday explaining that the federal government will approve access "customer by customer" during an initial preview phase. Altman noted in the communication that this restrictive rollout is "not [their] long-term model" for software deployment, and the company plans to work toward a "more sustainable" distribution method later. CNN said that both OpenAI and the Trump administration view the capabilities of GPT 5.6 on the same level as Anthropic's Mythos and that government officials intend to "collaborate with frontier AI labs to develop shared approaches for addressing the challenges of scaling this technology." The latest restriction comes just weeks after the US Commerce Department decided to restrict Fable, a version of Mythos with extra safety "guardrails" to prevent users from exploiting software vulnerabilities. Not long after the release, though, researchers at Amazon found a way to bypass these restrictions, prompting an aggressive response from federal authorities. The government ordered Anthropic to cut off access for non-US citizens located outside the US, non-US citizens living inside the US, and incredibly, even Anthropic's own foreign-born employees. Anthropic now appears to be building a workaround to resolve this compliance block with an update to its Privacy Policy that introduces a category called "Verification Data" to handle KYC and Digital IDs. This setup could mandate digital identity checks to filter users by nationality, requiring a government-issued ID and facial biometric data. Who knows? Maybe in the future, you would have to scan your US Passport or State ID to prove your citizenship before you are allowed to chat with Fable 5 (or any other model).
    • When Windows 7 was released I created an AutoHotkey script that uses Alt+` as a keyboard shortcut to move a window across monitors. I have been using that script for over 15 years and this is the first time I have come across another app that uses the same shortcut!
