Best tablet for my wife

Recommended Posts

Well, we should be getting our tax return in the next week or so now and my wife wants a tablet. The thing is, I know diddly squat about them. All she wants is a dependable tablet that will play Facebook games nicely without any issues. No long wait times on loading then either. The rest of the stuff that she does is check her email, weather and local news.

She also wants it to be under $300. Any advice would be great. Thanx.

So, she will be able to load up a web browser and play her facebook games?

no. but then again you won't be able to do that on any new tablet anymore (except a Windows RT tablet) since mobile flash was killed off last year

So either way then a tablet isn't going to work for her then?

not necessarily. many facebook games have a phone/tablet version as well. just check the playstore to see if the ones that she plays are there

So either way then a tablet isn't going to work for her then?

Correct. The easiest way to do this would be to get a Nexus 7, find a flash.apk(all over the internet and we can provide you with one) and download firefox. Firefox on Android OS 4.2 (known as Jellybean) will support flash, as long as you manually install it. Officially flash is killed off and no updates will be received.

On my Nexus 4, I tried this and it worked. Do I ever use flash? No, but I made a bet to my friends I would never need flash on a mobile device and guess what, still dont.

Well, since I know nada about these things, I would probably bork the S.O.B. up. So, I will see what else can be done. Also, we checked the playstore and only found 2 out of the 4 games she plays. One of which not found was the game she plays most.

A $300 tablet won't do everything you ask. The cheapest you can get that will is an Atom based Windows 8 tablet, which can be bought for $450 I believe.

This is basically what I told her. But she's adamant about 300 or less. So best bet might be a used lappy.

If she insists on touch, you can buy a used older model tablet PC. They're not extremely light, but they have 2 finger touch support in addition to stylus support. I see a few HP 2730p laptops with SSDs for $250 on eBay, such as this one. 128GB SSD and two batteries. Throw Windows 8 on there and it'll be pretty nice. Just make sure it has touch support first, the 2730p is configurable with pen-only input I believe.

EDIT: According to the description it does not support touch. I'm nearly positive there are configurations of the 2730p with touch support, even though this item says there aren't.

Here's one for $200 that shows it supports single touch input but has a slow and small 80GB 1.8" HDD.

I didnt know anyone play's Facebook games anymore. But The nexus 7 is your best bet. What she's asking for no longer exist in today's technology unless its a laptop or desktop.

Or, you know, one of those Windows tablets :p

The SurfaceRT now starts at $450.

Oh good lord please don't get her a Surface RT....

Now the real information you need to get for us is:

  • Does she WANT a tablet, or a laptop with touchscreen?

  • What facebook games does she actually play? Some facebook games now have Apple/Android versions of those games so that would help us help you.

She won't pay over $300. So the SurfaceRT is out anyways. We already looked at the appz store and there is only 2 games of the 4 she plays. Her main game she plays is one of the ones they don't have. Now she's on this kick about getting a Kindle FireHD.

Anyways, the games she plays is Farmville 2, DoubleDown Casino, Licky Jim Casino and Bingo Blitz.

Sounds like it's time for a new wife.

Also, a Kindle Fire HD is still not going to do what she wants. It's an Android based tablet, so it has the same limitations as a Nexus 7, but with more crapware.

I'm not even going there.

She knows that. So she figures just get something she can read books and watch movies. She says it's cheaper anyways.

What games doe she play?

Farmville 2, DoubleDown Casino, Lucky Jim Casino and Bingo Blitz.

No way would I get a Kindle HD unless I was bought a ton of stuff on Amazon/books. Just get the Nexus 7 for her. It will give her both ANYTHING on the Amazon market, and ANYTHING on the Android market, it will allow her to play games get updates regularly and its the best Android tablet out.

now as far as the games she plays, honestly there are a TON of replacements out there, that are identical to the games she plays. My wife quit playing Farmville 2 and now plays Hay Day, which is almost identical but she likes it better. Same thing with the poker type games and Bingo.

Keep in mind Zynga is hurting bad and lost a bunch of people and Gameloft is making copycat games like crazy that are REALLY good.

I told her about Hay Day and all she said was never heard of it. Then told her about your wife liking it better and she said: "Mm..Ok." So no clue if she will even try it. But I doubt it. All her friends play Farmville 2.

    • UK funds £60M AI labs to challenge US tech dominance with open-source models by Paul Hill The UK government has awarded £60 million to Oxford University and University College London to help keep the country in the AI race by focusing on open-source, low-hardware alternatives. This is in stark contrast to the expensive, closed-source, and high-hardware-requirement models being created in the United States and elsewhere. The money will be shared among two new academic research labs over six years to help them redesign the fundamental mathematics and architectures of AI to help the UK reduce its reliance on a handful of US tech firms. Commenting on the development, AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said: Initially, the government planned to fund just one lab with a £40 million investment, but with this update, two labs will now get access to a larger pool of funds. The labs are expected to invest in the top AI researchers at every career stage, with £2 million per lab being set aside for hiring at least ten doctoral students. The government hopes that this will grow the UK’s talent in the field of AI. The labs are also expected to work closely with the leaders in British AI research, such as the Alan Turing Institute and UKRI’s AI research hubs. This will allow the various teams to collaborate and create new solutions faster than they could alone. This development is pretty interesting for a number of reasons, chiefly that it could create a long-term challenge for US tech firms if these labs successfully scale these open-source architectures that bypass the proprietary ecosystems. It could also give British businesses and public sector organizations access to AI features without paying high licensing fees to foreign providers or needing to invest in specialized server infrastructure.
    • If I were them, I'm gonna hold out until the prices of these semiconductor parts normalize. $1,049 for a ~5 year old hardware is DoA, more so for gamers. On a deeper note, if Steam Machine is priced like this, we are soo effed up for the next gen Xbox console and PS6. With great AAA titles releasing at the end of the year, this just creates more demand...and more tears for me. Lol.
    • I suspect one reason its hard to justify subsidising is that it's not a locked down device like a traditional console is. In this climate sadly if it was a "good deal" you'd get people hoarding them for anything but gaming. The Lenovo Legion Go 2 with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme is £1300 here ($1720) for some context on how other SteamOS like devices are now priced. I got the older Z1 Extreme model for £300 with a dock, just shows how insane prices have got recently.
