soooo ****ed off right now, updated to 6.1, and was ready to restore and do the jailbreak only find itunes has deleted all of my backups, every single sodding one. which is made worse by the fact that windows 8 doesnt have shadow copies automatically enabled like win7. Thankfully i havent lost everything, just my messages and app settings. But seriously come May im jumping ship to galaxy s4, had enough of apple now

Which is why they tell you to do a backup right before you start the process..

Also I back up to iCloud also.. covers all my bases..

So, let's be clear...you didn't take the time to do either an itunes or icloud backup before doing the update. And you are ****ed because your older backups are missing? Sounds like a user issue. Do you have the backups stored somewhere? Sucks to be you....maybe next time you will plan ahead.

i did a normal itunes backup, backed up fine, even said last back up done at 17.40, updated to 6.1, then gave me the option of setting up a new phone only, which i thought was weird, so browsed to the location of the back up files in AppData/Apple Computer etc and the mobile sync folder was empty, so for some reason itunes spazzed out and deleted every back up, no sign of it in preferences either

iTunes doesn't delete all your backups unless you explicitly delete them from Prefs. It does delete older backups every n'th backup but never the whole set. Unless you meant to say that iTunes somehow deleted the backup you did just before you hit the restore button, which I find quite implausible unless you didn't let iTunes finish with the backup.

edit: suppose that did happen... you might be lucky if it's lingering around somewhere in Recycle Bin.

Also, have fun doing backups on Android. Out of box there isn't a one-step backup and restore process for phones. You'd need a bunch of third party tools to do that.

Android is fine and all, but Backups on Android are a bigger mess than they are on iOS so I don't see how that is going to solve your problem. I'm shocked that you lost all of your backups somehow. Sorry, man :(. I have Time Machine snapshotting my drive, and that has come in handy to get older backups restored.

Best thing to do is unlock, root your Android phone and install Titanium Backup. (But you will have to RTFM for Titanium Backup before using it...). Alternatively, you can do backups in Recovery (as of ICS) that are "image" type backups (I believe). That's a lot of fun (having to boot up into recovery just to get a proper backup)! Don't know who has time for that....

The stock Google "Backup" is a complete and utter joke. No app data. No call/SMS history. Very few settings are restored. No homescreen backup. All it basically does is re-load your last wall paper and re-download all your apps (yipee!!!).

If you are going to Android for a better backup experience, prepare to be disappointed.

Wow, that is bizarre :(. Sorry that happened. I'll be sure to double check my backup folder now!

Having trouble installing SBSettings...Guessing this is widespread then :p

yeah, all the repos except saurik's are still a no go

saurik seems to have found a way to work around the traffic

Lol, all my settings for all my jailbroken apps on my iPhone 5 are exactly how I left them on my iPhone 4.

It sure was nice of Apple to restore those settings for me when I restored the iPhone 4 backup to my iPhone 5 ;). Magical.

Is using emulator on iPad 3 illegal?

I agree with Bizkit in that it is kind of a grey area.

Everything is installed. BiteSMS is awesome :). Loving having that back already. Still having some licensing issues with some previously purchased apps but I understand the situation is uncontrollable at the moment.

It is good to see so many apps already iPhone 5 optimized.

It's legal if you own the original of the game.. If not you enter a grey area.. and if they still sell the game in some form then you've surely crossed it.

All that said, I wouldn't worry about it too much one way or another..

Jailbroken and now about to update my iPads. Once the madness calms down I'll get f.lux on my iPhone 5 finally, and SBSettings finally.

This is a good day :)

Strange, I run the app, plug in my iPad but nothing happens. The 'jailbreak' button stays greyed out. Tried different USB ports, too. Hmmm.

Just tried my iPhone, same issue.

for the windows version you need to run it as administrator

I have the same problem with my iPhone 3GS, but it works just fine with a friend's iPhone 4 (GSM).

    • AltSendme 0.4.1 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). Other improvements Private relay access control via shared auth token Relay fallback notifications when a custom relay is unreachable Broadcast mode toggle in sharing settings Android release build fixes (split-per-ABI APKs, universal APK preservation) UI polish: mobile safe-area insets, dropzone layout, transfer progress animation Bug fixes for minification-related serialization issues and system tray icon loading What's Changed feat(relay): add relay status functionality and settings UI (a120cdf) feat(relay): implement custom relay server configuration and verification (51276c7) feat(relay): add configuration for private relay access and enhance observability features (48fbabf) feat(relay): enhance relay URL validation, display connection status (d4fffa0) feat(relay): add RelayChangeGuard component and enhance relay-related translations (16ba514) feat(broadcast): add toggle setting for broadcast mode in sharing UI (ca6d977) fix(relay): correct QUIC discovery port, pin image, templatize fly.dev (52a2ba5) fix: More broken serialization due to minification (67491a9) fix(android): preserve true universal APK across per-ABI builds (e9f256f) fix(ui): conditional safe-area insets padding on mobile (1182f0e) refactor(transfer): CircularRing component animation fix (944572b) chore(android): drop x86 and x86_64 release APKs, keep universal+arm64+armv7 (34ada0b) Download: AltSendme 0.4.1 | ARM64 | ~9.0 MB (Open Source) Download: AltSendme for MacOS | Android Links: AltSendme Home Page | GitHub | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
    • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
    • OK so SearXNG is a meta search engine that you can install locally or use via a public instance. It scrapes other search engines which you choose and then sorts the results. Not as complicated as multiple relays
