Why is it so hard to change the time?

Recommended Posts

Why is it so hard to change the time in Fedora 18? I'm running the official KDE remix. When I go to adjust date and time, I select the Public time server and then I go to Time zone to select Eastern. I Click OK and it says "Unable to contact time server: Public Time Server (pool.ntp.org)." I click OK, then it gives me this error: "Error setting new time zone." What? LOL. I've spent 2 hours googleing this with no luck. Ideas? Thanks Guys.

Talk about wasting your time!

Can you tell it to stop setting the time automatically before you change it yourself?

Yeah I can do it like that. It still gives me that stupid Time Zone message though. I just can't sync with the fedora time servers. And yeah, I'm board right now. lol!

Its a bug and has been reported

That's the problem I'm experienceing. It never occured to me to check the bug wikis. I see you're a Fedora user yourself. Do you have this issue on Gnome 3? Should I still try useing uk.pool.ntp.org despite this bug? Thanks Haggis!! :)

I'm pretty sure I just fixed it! Under Fedora Menu, Click "Administration" > Set time and date. It will ask you for your password. Change it to your liking and Reboot. Should be fixed. I also did a slew of updates (It was up to date last night--these are new), so whatever fixed it, IDK but it works. :) Thanks everybody!

I did my updates and all was fine but maybe mine included the new ones you mentioned

i also got a Kernel update

Same here. :) Thanks for your help. :)

likely a permissions issue (ie your user is not allowed default time operations). However I will say in my Arch installs the date and time always cause me the most headaches.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Thanks! :)

    • Limited Prime Day deal sees Amazon Echo Show 11 is at its lowest price yet by Ivan Jenic The Amazon Echo Show 11 is currently $149.99 on Amazon during Prime Day, down from $219.99. That's 32% off and $70 saved on Amazon's newest mid-size smart display (purchase link below). As its name suggests, the Echo Show 11 features a 11” Full-HD touchscreen, which is a decent upgrade over the Echo Show 8. It offers 60% more viewing area, which makes a genuine difference for recipes, calendars, video calls, or any other scenario where the smaller display can feel a bit cramped. The Show 11 is built around Alexa+, Amazon's more capable AI assistant that can handle natural conversation. You can make reservations, order groceries, and find content based on your preferences, instead of always having to give it precise commands. There’s also the Omnisense technology, which adds ambient awareness, allowing the device to trigger routines based on temperature, presence detection, or visual cues. Smart home control is built in without needing a separate hub, and the home screen doubles as a photo slideshow when not in use. Taking all of this into account, the Show 11 is a perfect smart addition to your kitchen counter or living room. At $149.99, this is a strong Prime Day buy for anyone already in the Amazon ecosystem or looking to build one out. • Dang that sucks. I just started using this feature instead of Pushbullet.
    • I use my devices until the very end. I used my old desktop computer for 16 years, my OnePlus 5T phone for 8 years and my LG Gram laptop for 7 years. Even though they are still working, there are no more security updates for most of them (Windows 7 ESU, Android 12 ROM and the LG Gram because I wanted an ARM based laptop).
