James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has found its lead. Deadline is reporting that "Parks & Recreation" and Zero Dark Thirty star Chris Pratt will play Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) in the August 1, 2014 release.

The Quill character is likely to be the central protagonist of the film. Raised on Earth, Quill learns that his father was from outer space and is drawn into an intergalactic conflict that eventually leads to him becoming the leader of the team.

Quite arguably Marvel Studios' most offbeat property to date, Guardians of the Galaxy's roster is also said to include Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Racoon and Gamora. Check back for casting details on those roles as they emerge.

Cinema Blend spoke with ?Guardians of the Galaxy? executive producer Victoria Alonso who said of their plans:

You can?t do any motion capture with a raccoon?but we will do rotomation, probably, for some of the behavior. Rocket will have his own personality, of course, and clearly we can?t do mocap on a tree, per say [sic], but we definitely will have performers to emulate what James Gunn will lead to be the behavior and the performance. He?s very clear on where he wants to take the characters.

Latino-Review ? who?ve been leading the charge in dropping Guardians news bits before Marvel even confirmed the film ? has the scoop on the major casting news, and according to their trusted (and proven) sources, Jason Momoa will play Drax the Destroyer.

According to the report, Momoa won Marvel?s attention with an impressive screen test and they immediately offered him the part. He?s currently in negotiations to join the James Gunn written and directed film.

Drax is the second character to be cast, with Chris Pratt signing up as the film?s lead Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord last week. Unsubstantiated rumors previously listed Isaiah Mustafa (center in the below image), Brian Patrick Wade (left) and Dave Bautista (right) as being up for the role.

Now with the Guardians of the Galaxy film taking place 95% in space, we should expect the James Gunn-directed space epic to feature numerous other cosmic beings. That being said, Ain?t It Cool News? Harry Knowles recently reported that, ?I was contacted by a source..., telling me that after they had a dinner with a friend that is a confirmed part of [Guardians of the Galaxy]?s production team, that the friend let it slip over the meal that NOVA CORPS were definitely a part of the movie.? The inclusion of the intergalactic military/police force known as The Nova Corps implies that the first character known as Nova, Richard Rider, will also appear, making his cinematic debut.
The Nova Corps was originally a space militia and exploration group for the planet Xandar in the comic books. The source of their power was called the Nova Force which is an unlimited energy generated by a living computer called the Xandarian Worldmind. Throughout their paperback ventures, The Nova Corps crossed paths with many cosmic beings such as The Kree, The Skrulls and actually teamed-up with Guardians of the Galaxy

Various reports have indicated that Marvel Studios have been closing in on their 'Drax the Destroyer' for Guardians of the Galaxy over the past few weeks now, with Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista said to be the two frontrunners. Well, The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that the mixed martial artist and WWE wrestler Dave Bautista has closed his deal to play the character in James Gunn's big screen adaptation. The site describes the character as, "a human resurrected as a green warrior with the sole purpose of killing Thanos (the villain in the final-scene tease of Avengers). His powers include flight, super-strength and energy blasts." Bautista joins Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) in the movie which is currently set to be released on August 1st, 2014.

Should be a strange, off beat movie. Just my kind of movie, in fact.

And some of Galactus' heralds weren't offbeat?

Please - I'm not JUST referring to Silver Surfer, either. Consider Terrax the Terminator (who was the replacement for SS when he went *rogue*) - HE was a single-world dictator that found himself unemployed when Galactus ate his fiefdom.

Guardians of the Galaxy was unique in that it was basically all-offbeat always - even during the original run, several of Marvel's MAINSTREAM titles went into the Strange (and I don't mean Stephen Strange, either) at least once a year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar and Star Trek actress Zoe Saldana is in negotiations to add another sci-fi venture to her ever-growing resume: Marvel?s forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy space epic. The Hollywood trade reports that Saldana is in talks to play Gamora, the female lead character in the James Gunn-directed 2014 adaptation. As the ?deadliest woman in the galaxy,? Gamora is a green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species, which was wiped out by the villainous race known as the Badoon. The trained assassin also has ties to the Mad Titan Thanos; she was raised by him before turning good and joining the Guardians of the Galaxy. Joining Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista in Guardians, Zoe Saldana, 34, will soon appear in Star Trek Into Darkness, action thriller Out of the Furnace and Avatar 2.

The latest Exclusive from Latino Review once again concerns Marvel Studios? 2014 much-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy adaptation. With the James Gunn-directed space epic in its casting stage, the Latino outlet has it ?on good authority? that the supervillain known as Basil Sandhurst, aliased The Controller, will be one of the characters who?ll take on the interstellar superteam, but that?s not all. ?I?m told that The Controller will act as Thanos? main henchman and ambassador.? While the Mad Titan?s cameo in Marvel?s The Avengers? mid-credits stinger has fueled speculation that Thanos will appear in Joss Whedon?s 2015 sequel in addition to Guardians of the Galaxy, Latino Review suggests the purple supervillain?s inclusion is only ?a strong possibility.?

Anyhow, as LR and Wikipedia note, The Controller designed his armored exoskeleton, which is micro-surgically attached to his body from head to toe and grants him mobility, as well as superhuman strength and endurance. He uses ?slave discs? to control others, using the micro-circuitry in his helmet to drain cerebral energy from his victims to power his exoskeleton and magnify its strength and duplicate his victim?s abilities. In the comics, Thanos released The Controller from prison, upgraded his technology and promised him rulership of Earth.

As the James Gunn-directed space epic?s cast slowly fills out, Guardians of the Galaxy is currently prepping production in England for a late-June filming start date. In light of set preparations, UK motorcycle manufacturers have been approached by Marvel, who are apparently seeking ?[multiple] futuristic looking electric bikes.? The Motorbike Times reports, ?The comic book movie makers have contacted the Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) and explained that the bike will be used in a major production that will be shot in England in an imaginary 2045.?

Michael Rooker, who was fantastic on his now-completed run on AMC?s The Walking Dead, has been cast as one of the four founding superheroes of Guardians Of The Galaxy, the Marvel Studios pic that James Gunn is helming. He will play Yondu, who in Marvel lore was a game hunter of a primitive tribe native to Centauri IV, the first planet system to be colonized outside of the Sun?s solar system. He eventually bands together with fellow fugitives to form the superhero team. Chris Pratt already has been cast, and Disney plans an August 1, 2014 release date.

s The Hollywood Reporter reveals, Marvel?s forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie recently added English actress Ophelia Lovibond to its slowly growing ensemble cast. Although her supporting role is unknown, her character in the James Gunn-directed adaptation will ?play an aide to a being called The Collector, who gathers artifacts and beings in the hopes of saving them from a foretold galactic annihilation.? The Collector, aka Taneleer Tivan, is known as one of the Elders of the Universe and, in the Marvel Comics, didn't have ties to the Guardians of the Galaxy, but interacted with The Avengers and supervillain Thanos, whose inclusion in Guardians has been all but confirmed, when the Mad Titan posed a threat to the Elders. Anyhow, Ophelia Lovibond, 27, has starred in Nowhere Boy, No Strings Attached, Mr. Popper's Penguins, a couple British sitcoms and recently appeared alongside Sam Rockwell in A Single Shot thriller, and the relatively unknown actress joins Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana and Michael Rooker.

Lee Pace has won the villain role in Marvel Studios' upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, The Wrap reports. His role has not yet been disclosed, but he'll join Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker and Ophelia Lovibond in the James Gunn film.

The film, based on the Marvel comic books of the same name, features an unlikely cast of characters who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions.

While there's no confirmation as of yet, there's a good chance that Pace's role is that of Taneleer Tivan, AKA The Collector. In the comics, Tivan learned about the threat Thanos posed to the universe and sought to collect life forms and worlds to place in a museum of sorts, ideally protecting them from Thanos' path of destruction. The character was recently said to be involved in the storyline.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios leader Kevin Feige, confirmed Zoe Saldana for Guardians of the Galaxy and confirmed some previously assumed points about the film's storyline. In the concept art to the right, that's a young Peter Quill having his first extraterrestrial encounter with aliens before he's whisked away into space. Feige reiterated a few previously made statements about Guardians of the Galaxy, reaffirming his love of Star Wars and Star Trek and that Marvel always wanted to make a space movie. He also goes on to say that the film is set within Marvel continuity but it occurs on the other side of the universe. Feige goes on to state that he thinks "audiences will respond to an alien Zo? Salda?a," so consider the negotiations for the Star Trek Into Darkness actress to play Gamora a done deal.
Marvel Studios is no stranger to casting quality actors in their films, but when Dave Bautista was confirmed to tackle the role of Drax The Destroyer, many people were skeptical if he was the right choice, but the actor seems committed to the role as he recently tweeted pics of him wearing a Marvel T- Shirt.

David Tennant Rumored For Rocket Raccoon In Guardians Of The Galaxy

According to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Facebook fan-site, David Tennant has been ?tapped? to voice the character of Rocket Raccoon in Marvel?s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy for director James Gunn. So far this just a rumor, but the word is that Tennant is at the top of the list to play the role. At one point, both Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler were rumored for the role.

Tennant is best known for playing The Doctor, appearing as the 10th incarnation of the character from 2005 to 2010. He?s also returning to the iconic role for the upcoming 50th anniversary special in 2013. He later appeared in the movie remake of Fright Night in 2011, and recently did some voice work for Lucasfilm for the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series.

Rocket Raccoon is the ?muscle? of the Guardians of the Galaxy team. He has a keen sense of smell, sight, and hearing, much like an Earth raccoon, but he?s also an expert marksman, master tactician, and an accomplished starship pilot. He also has an affinity for heavy artillery and weaponry.

David Tennant as Rocket Racoon??? I hope not - RR looks cute but should sound hard as nails!! The best 3 suggestions I've heard so far are Jason Statham, Danny Trejo(!!!!!) and to a lesser extent H Jon Benjamin :)

    • NASA: This asteroid may not kill us but it probably won't be far off either by Sayan Sen Image by Zelch Csaba via Pexels New observations by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope have eliminated the last remaining impact threat posed by asteroid 2024 YR4, ruling out the possibility that the near-Earth object could strike the Moon in December 2032. NASA said observations collected by Webb on February 18 and 26, 2026, enabled scientists to refine the asteroid's orbit enough to "rule out a chance of lunar impact on Dec. 22, 2032." Instead, asteroid 2024 YR4 is now expected to pass the Moon at a distance of about 13,200 miles (21,200 km). The agency stressed that the update "reflects improved precision in our understanding of where the asteroid is expected to be in 2032 rather than a shift in its orbital path." The announcement closes a remarkable chapter in planetary defence that began in late 2024, when the approximately 60-metre-wide asteroid briefly became the most closely watched near-Earth object in the world. Discovered on December 27, 2024, by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, 2024 YR4 initially appeared to have a small chance of colliding with Earth on December 22, 2032. As astronomers gathered more observations, the impact probability briefly climbed to around 3%—the highest ever recorded for an asteroid of its size—before steadily falling as its orbit became better understood. By early 2025, international observations had ruled out any significant risk to Earth. However, astronomers were left with another possibility: a roughly 4% chance that the asteroid could instead strike the Moon. "The probability that asteroid 2024 YR4 will strike the Moon on 22 December 2032 is now approximately 4%," the European Space Agency (ESA) had said last year, noting that "there is a 96% chance that the asteroid will not impact the Moon." ESA said such an impact, while unlikely, would have presented an extraordinary scientific opportunity. "It is a very rare event for an asteroid this large to impact the Moon – and it is rarer still that we know about it in advance. The impact would likely be visible from Earth, and so scientists will be very excited by the prospect of observing and analysing it," said Richard Moissl, Head of ESA's Planetary Defence Office. "It would certainly leave a new crater on the surface. However, we wouldn't be able to accurately predict in advance how much material would be thrown into space, or whether any would reach Earth," he added. The asteroid also exposed an important blind spot in planetary defence. Because 2024 YR4 approached Earth from the direction of the Sun, it remained hidden from ground-based telescopes until after its closest approach. "We looked into how Neomir would have performed in this situation, and the simulations surprised even us," Moissl said. "Neomir would have detected asteroid 2024 YR4 about a month earlier than ground-based telescopes did. This would have given astronomers more time to study the asteroid's trajectory and allowed them to much sooner rule out any chance of Earth impact in 2032." He added, "As an infrared telescope, like Webb, Neomir would have also immediately given us a much better estimate for the asteroid's size, which is very important for assessing the significance of the hazard." The latest NASA observations underscore the value of space-based infrared telescopes in tracking faint asteroids. According to NASA, Webb made "among the faintest ever observations of an asteroid," extending the object's observational record by nearly eight months at a time when it had become too faint for other telescopes. That additional data allowed scientists to eliminate the remaining uncertainty surrounding its 2032 flyby. Although asteroid 2024 YR4 is now confirmed to pose no threat to either Earth or the Moon, scientists say its discovery remains one of the most significant real-world tests of the international planetary defence system, demonstrating how continued observations can rapidly transform an object once considered hazardous into one whose future path is known with high confidence. • Yup. Google is just scraping the entire internet for their own ad profits without sharing revenue with the sources. It's obviously stealing, but since these sites depend upon Google's search scraps to survive... As for me, I just stopped using Google for anything except Reddit searches. If Reddit's own search wasn't complete crapola, I'd never use Google search again.
    • I had a feeling this was coming. Picked up my first Mac ever last Saturday. Glad I did.
    • In a major surprise there is actually some good deals for the first time in years. At least for me.
