I do think a lot of people in this thread have jumped down your throat a bit, but... I can't even think of anything useful for you. I (and I bet most members here) have been selective with Antivirus and Antimalware software, and so have never really had any genuine problems with them.

The reason for my question was that I found the whole setup, well, bizarre, for lack of a better term.

The message you were sent sounds like it was written by someone who had spent a some time studying your business practices in some level of detail to identify specific vendors you were familiar with (even if they got some of that wrong), which implies they already have some ability to do fairly targeted searches and analyze the results.

Why they would contact you, out of the blue, to perform some research that it sounds like they could simply handle in-house seems very strange to me. It reads almost like the setup portion of some type of scam, but I cannot image what the actual mechanism might be.

Here's a suggestion, though, that might help you with your research: Try visiting your favorite search engine (Google, Bing, et cetera) and doing a search on "{company name and/or product name} + bad signature update". You may have to play around with the search terms a little bit (bug|crash|error|issue|signature|update) but eventually you should get some media reports that help you build the report.

You might also want to do a little searching on the company or person asking about this, especially if you've not done business with them before. Even if all you find are routine things going back a few years, you will at least know they are stable and have been around for a while.

I told them about ESET becuase my sister likes them and she has had them for 3 years and it's been good for her.....I did see some results of ESET deleting some files, however not near as tragic as symantec/mcafee/sophos/avg/avira

I shall see if they are happy with that.

I think that's probably because Neowin users weren't happy with the thread.

There's a difference between asking for advice and asking for people to do work for you. I'm not aiming this AT you, so much as observing why your request garnered the response it did.

Occasionally **** happens with AV software. For the most part, the answer is do proper back ups and your AV can't really ruin your day..

Given you should be doing proper backups anyway, this should be easy enough to do >.<

They could always post the question and get the same anwser so that way you don't have to deal with the flack... it is a free forum and all.

They asked for your experience based upon your existing relationship with several security firms and your position in several communities. If those factors weren't important they could have simply signed up to various forums and asked themselves. They were probably expecting you to ask around discreetly, talking to members with security experience rather than simply opening it up to complete strangers. And given that you mention they are a "client" I can only assume there is money involved (either directly or indirectly, through repeat business), which makes it even worse - you're attempting to profit from the kindness of people here.

Part of it was due to how you asked the question. It would be like someone studying Shakespeare asking: "Please list the primary motivations of Hamlet. Please provide 5 links to support your assertions." It just comes across as very demanding, self-entitled and lazy. You'd have done better to ask something along the lines of "I'm trying to compare the major security breaches of anti-virus companies and would like some assistance", followed by links to the research you'd done on your own (to show that you had actually been bothered to do the basics). The issue is that people feel exploited if you're not even willing to do basic Google searches yourself. Asking for users experiences is one thing but expecting people to do Google searches for you is another.

According to Dbrand, it took the "backwards approach" of building the product first before asking for permission from the copyright holder. Seven months of work went into the project, requiring over a thousand engineering hours from the design team. Workers developed forty-four sets of injection molding tools, making a unique mold for each sub-component of the crate. When the Companion Cube went live on Monday last week, it, according to Dbrand, quickly became the second-fastest-selling product in the company's fifteen-year history, racking up orders for hundreds of thousands of units. Customers eagerly bought the $129.95 deluxe edition or the bare-bones $99.95 version, which the manufacturer cheekily branded as the "Poverty Cube". It was around this time that the legal eagles at Valve descended on the accessory maker with a formal demand. The developer pointed out that the iconic block design remains protected intellectual property from the game Portal, so unlicensed sales had to stop. Dbrand said that all its pleas to salvage the project with the Valve team, including proposals to run a properly licensed release under official terms "with their blessing", fell on deaf ears, so it had no choice but to obey and remove every trace of the product from the internet. If you bought the enclosure, the company said that banks will process your refund by the end of this week, but if it still hasn't arrived in your account by then, you should not hesitate to contact support. The Steam Machine itself is a high-performance console that Valve designed directly to bring PC gaming into the living room. It was announced on 12th November 2025 (the same day Dbrand announced the Cube) and runs on the Linux-based SteamOS, the same OS that powers the Steam Deck. As for the price, due to the shortage of memory and storage chips, the hardware cost landed much higher than people were expecting, starting at $1,049 for the 512 model (without a controller) or $1,128 with the new gamepad. The premium 2 TB model pushes those prices even higher, selling at $1,349 for the standalone console and hitting $1,428 if you want the bundle.
