Why Didn

Well, that was weird. We got a console reveal without Sony actually revealing the console. It's left a lot of people confused, maybe even concerned, so given the chance we had to ask: where was the PS4?

"Why do you care?", jokes Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony's Worldwide Studios.

Pressed as to what we should be reading into when we get a console reveal without the reveal of the console, Yoshida tells Kotaku "It was almost the other way around. When we planned for this event, obviously we discussed what we should show and talk about."

"As far as the DualShock 4 is concerned we wanted to do the live demo. And we were like, yeah, we have to show the controller, because it's awkward not to show the controller when someone is doing a demo. And also the feature that the DualShock 4 has, the share button, is a very key idea behind the design of the PS4... We really wanted to explain what we've done with the DualShock 4, but as far as the system itself we have to keep something new for later. Otherwise you'd get bored."

It would have been nice to see the console itself, and I am sure images will leak before long. But seriously, we all have a rough idea of what consoles look like: a black box with power/eject buttons and a slot/tray for discs.

This generation is going to be quite socially engineered. Look at the amount of wagglan mess that the PS4 has to offer, including a tie-in WITH FACEBOOK just so you can actually sign-in to the damn console. If this doesn't start ringing bells well get ready for more.

The conference was a joke, it showed five actual games, two are multi-plat (watch dogs and D3), two are rehashes (infamous and killzone) and one is a random game called knack. There was a move game that has you wagglan around building pieces of dung to make a human, and a totally not real demo of people pulling strings on puppets.

They revealed fairly heavy online functions, including streaming capabilities and playing the game while downloading. These two offerings are going to be very tech heavy, hell just streaming WoW and trying to play is laggy enough, better yet a game like BF4. They also require extremely fast internet to actually get anywhere, which half the world does not have.

Various real time scenes were shown, including a year old tech demo from Unreal and Square. Honestly, we need to see games. Confirming that there is no backwards compatibility is a kick in the guts, and means those games you just bought are now useless unless you feel like constantly switching consoles. They also give the vita another kick by saying its useless and can now only "stream" ps4 games.

Honestly, this PS4 has interesting tech and ideas, but was just executed so poorly you can tell its a rush job. Expect $5xx price tag and a release at the end of the year with no games.

I like how Sony is keeping up their "@! You" Mentality. This reminds me of the "people will get a second job to buy it" talk about the PS3. Why do we care? I dunno, you're only announcing the next big generation of your platform. Maybe we'd like to see it?

Just keep the whole reveal until later and show us the whole system instead of this piece by piece deal.

actually the PS4 is very nice, with some nice nifty features, but I know the new xbox is going to destroy this thing. I mean,if there wasn't xbox I would definitely pick up a PS4. I bought a PS3 first before I bought an Xbox360,but I ended up liking the Xbox360 better, from the controller,to xbox live. I still use both today, but mostly the xbox.

and whats really weird is that sony said they would let Microsoft announce their console first, then out of no where they decide they want to show off the PS4. then they don't even show the console, meaning they weren't ready to announce this thing, but they were pressured to for some odd reason.

Why didn't we actually see it? may be they haven't finalized the industrial design and probably some specs yet (notice how RAM got doubled from the rumors).

How do you know nextBox will be "better" though? We don't know anything yet (although compared to PS4 stuff shown today, MS rumors are better).

... including a tie-in WITH FACEBOOK just so you can actually sign-in to the damn console...

I'm sure 99% of your post is FUD and hate for Sony, but if the above is not part of that 99% then I'll be seriously disappointed. I hate FaceBook and refuse to use it despite all the odd looks I get from people for not being on there and a console will not be the reason I sign up.

So here's the hoping you misquoted or took something out of context when you wrote that.

http://www.vgleaks.c...ngo-unveiled-2/ they are narly the same

the only main difference (which is in Sony's favor btw) is the PS4 is using GDDR5 ram vs nextbox just using DDR3

    • Amazon Prime Day slashes Samsung's newest Galaxy Watch Ultra by 45 percent by Karthik Mudaliar Samsung’s flagship Android smartwatch has received one of its steepest Prime Day cuts. Amazon has dropped the 2025 Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra in Titanium Blue to $357.24, saving buyers around $292 from its $649.99 list price. That's a 45 percent discount (purchase link below). The 47mm Galaxy Watch Ultra uses a titanium casing and a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 480 x 480 and peak brightness of 3,000 nits. It includes LTE connectivity, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi, NFC, and dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS for more accurate outdoor route tracking. The 2025 model has 64GB of storage, a 590mAh battery, sapphire crystal glass, 10ATM water resistance, IP68 protection, and MIL-STD-810H durability testing. Its health and fitness tools include heart rate monitoring, sleep coaching, Energy Score, Running Coach, body composition analysis, temperature sensing, and ECG support, where available. This model is best suited to Android users who regularly run, hike, cycle, or train outdoors and want cellular access without carrying a phone. The larger battery, rugged construction, bright display, and dedicated Quick Button also make it a stronger option than Samsung’s regular Galaxy Watch models for extended workouts and demanding environments. • Google begins rolling out its post-Epic Play Store billing model next week by Karthik Mudaliar Google has confirmed that its redesigned Play Store billing and fee structure will take effect on June 30, 2026, in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Economic Area. The changes will let eligible developers offer their own payment systems or send users to an external website for purchases, while separating Google’s platform service fee from the cost of using Google Play Billing. The rollout puts concrete dates and detailed rate cards behind the broader Android policy overhaul Google announced in March. That announcement followed a proposed settlement with Epic Games intended to resolve their long-running disputes over app distribution and payments, although the U.S. portion of the agreement still requires court approval. Under the new billing choice program, developers selling digital content or services can display an alternative payment option alongside Google Play Billing. They may also direct users to their own websites to complete a purchase. Developers can use Google’s standard payment-choice screen or design one that complies with the company’s user-interface rules. Choosing another payment processor does not eliminate Google’s cut altogether. The company will continue charging a service fee for transactions associated with apps distributed through Google Play, regardless of whether payment is handled by Google, an alternative provider, or a developer’s website. Google argues that this fee covers the value and infrastructure provided by Android and the Play Store. For developers earning up to $1 million annually, the service fee will generally be 10 percent. That rate also applies to auto-renewing subscriptions. When Google Play Billing is used in the U.S., U.K., or EEA, Google will add a separate 5 percent billing fee, and developers processing payments elsewhere will not pay that additional charge. This means Google’s familiar flat 30 percent commission is disappearing, but developers will not necessarily see a dramatic reduction on every transaction. An in-app purchase from an existing user processed through Google Play Billing can still reach a combined 30 percent. The biggest savings are likely to come from subscriptions, smaller developers covered by the $1 million tier, and companies able to move customers to their own payment infrastructure. Google is also offering lower rates through its Apps Experience and revamped Games Level Up programs. Apps and games that satisfy the company’s requirements can qualify for 15 percent service fees on new-install transactions and 20 percent on existing-install transactions. The criteria include performance and reliability standards, support for additional Android device categories, and selected platform features. Those program rates are scheduled to become available in the initial markets and Australia on September 30. For consumers, the immediate effect will depend on whether developers adopt alternative payments and pass any savings on through lower prices. For developers, however, June 30 begins a more flexible but considerably more complicated Play Store economy in which distribution, billing, install dates, revenue thresholds, and program participation can each affect Google’s final cut. Google is also separately developing a Registered App Stores program designed to simplify the installation of qualifying third-party stores. That initiative is expected to arrive with a major Android release later in 2026 and will launch outside the U.S. first. Google says the rest of the world will receive the changes by September 30, 2027, although billing rates for markets outside the US, UK, and EEA have not yet been announced.
