Sony: PSN purchases don't carry over to PS4

It's the morning after the night before, and Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has just confirmed to us that current-generation PSN titles won't transfer across to the PlayStation 4. The company admitted last night that PS3 games wouldn't be compatible with the latest console, but has added that it will try to make titles playable "in some form." Because the architecture of the Power-PC-based PS3 and x86-based PlayStation 4 are so different, Sony will only bring across games that don't guzzle the latest console's power in emulation. The executive also said that the company aims to offer server-side and cloud services to offer a wider library of older games, but said that's one for the "longer term."

Well, that must suck for anyone who's built up a digital game collection.

PSN games are no different than retail discs, they're just wrapped in a digital package.

Sadly this was going to happen unless they emulated CELL, or put CELL in the PS4.

What these console companies should do (all of them) is allow the user with a physical PS3 game to somehow register that copy that allows the user to play the game server-side/streaming.

as another example, i have a very small collection of PSP UMDs, but i have no way to play them on my Vita now. i'd have to repurchase them and download them to the unit.

although that idea sounds too simplistic. What if you register a game, then try to resell? or register a game that you borrowed from a friend. oops.

PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF. I've sunk at least 500 quid into PS3 digital stuff, surely can't be that hard to get PSN games working on PS4.

Not surprising. That said, the price of PS3s should drop considerably once PS4s come out, might as well just keep one around.

Ya, no problem. Just need to emulate an entirely different architecture and GPU. No biggy.

It's not like PSN games use the CELL and RSX to their full potential, PS3 has a PS2 emulator where do you think all these PS2 classics are coming from, they are essentially just ISO files wrapped in a PS2 emulator.

That's a ridiculous statement. There are only about 50 PS2 games on the PSN store and PS2 is not the same as PS3. PS3 is 10x more powerful and it's not like there are any PC emulators that can handle it, unlike with PS2.

EDIT: By the way, the PS2 games on PSN are remastered to work on PS3.

While it isn't ideal, if you have a substantial library you must have a ps3 on which you bought it. It isn't like they are retiring all of the content you've paid for.

Perhaps in the future they'll start to make more PSN/PS3 content compatible with the PS4.
