Idiot fries motherboard

Recommended Posts

A guy in my computer class tried to tell me that he managed to overclock his P4 from 2.6GHz to 3.6GHz, keeping the temperature under 100 degrees celcius, and with only a heatsink and fan. We told him that it wasn't possible, so he decided to prove us wrong. The next day he told us that he fried his motherboard.

He is going to RMA it, and he needs to flash the BIOS. The board is completely dead and he needs to be sure that they never find out what he did to it. It is an ASUS board.

^agree with staind

Though a LOT of companies give over the counter returns. The one I worked for did this for the first year and then refused to do it any more. Most people would blow it by doing these things, give a replacement, and end up screwed out of the money as the maker wouldn't replace it.

They do check EVERY SINGLE one to make sure it was a manufacturer's defect or not.

lol, is it possible he was successful the first time, but the second time he wasn't so lucky? Are P4's designed to go that high?

He probably just needs to reset the bios, it is very unlikely he ruined the board without changing any voltages. and why couldn't a 2.6 do 3.6? I've seen 2.4's over that (on air), it is a very possible overclock. Some people should not be aloud to overclock :x and he is one of them, fry the bios chip with a power cable. That has to be the absolute stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life...

It certainly sounds like he lacks intelligence.

Some P4s can do 3.6, i've seen them go as high as 4.4 ghz. But that involves extreme cooling measures; he tried to do it on air, which isn't very smart.

It is possible he didn't damage anything as well. Sometimes all you have to do is reset the bios, either through a jumper or by manually taking out the cmos battery.

yes hes a fool for doing it, its probably cost him a fair bob or two as well

but how can you judge him and say he lacks intelligence? if he managed to do it to 3.6 then sobeit. well done to him, and if he burned it out, at least he was trying. how the hell do you think half of the **** in teh world gets invented anyway? though trial and error. stop putting someone down just because he has failed once

Intel Max temp on a P4 is 70C and for a 875/865 northbridge is 99C. If it was anywhere close to 100C the cpu would have caved...I couldnt push past 3.5ghz on my stock HSF.

Before attempting to overclock you have to know what you are doing and the limitations of the chip. I know from experience you generally cannot overclock on air better then 3.2. Anything higher is pushing it as the chip outputs more heat then it's designed for. He was careless, plain and simple.
