I really like the Slate themes brought out so far. I was looking at some shots from the PDC I noticed the start panel has the User picture/logo (or whatever the name for the picture is) half attached the start panel? Meaning that it is half "sticking out the top". I have seen some other VS's that have been made like this and I am wondering if anyone is planning on making a LH/Aero (whichever it is) VS with a startpanel like this? :)

well the screenshot is pretty easy to reproduce as a static startmenu well it would be close anyway.. black on the left white window on the right .. user pane magic pink for transparency with a few black pixels on the bottom to cap off the startmenu. user name text should be able to hide with negitive values in content margins so only the user picture will show, unfortunatly user pictures dont seem to do transparency so ya cant have a cool user pic like in the screenshot .. plus the screenshot has window transparency turned up pretty high .. im guessing the normal slate gradient is actually in the left side of the startmenu on that screenshot

Ill play around with the idea and see what i can come up with :D give me a day or so, have a real life to attend before i can play with a new style again ;)

OldeCrow,

I look forward to seeing your attempt at the startpanel. I really like how it looks in the pic above!

I agree with TheEcho, I think this could be made to look great, even without the fancy Aero effects :)

same here, this could be made into a great theme. any idea if you'll get to it by saturday night?

WindowsX is right its just plain FUGLY !

and i did tell him i didnt think i would do it after saying in here that i would ..

having said that ill try to at least get a slate/aero startmenu together for a screenshot since there seems to be so much interest

While I was thinking about this i did tinker with another style this afternoon to see if i could reproduce the basic layout as the screenshot ..

    • I'd say the first one failed to be as popular as Apple anticipated, but the easy adjustment here is to make fewer of them next time around. It would only be a "flop" if it isn't possible for Apple to recover the design and factory tooling costs given the number of units sold, which I doubt would be the case. It isn't like no one bought them; it just failed to become the new hot phone of the year.
    • You're right that it does not follow the plain meaning of the word, but in this context, it is a legal term defined in 49 U.S.C. Kind of how "wire fraud" laws apply even if a physical wire was not used. Given that it is codified in law, and it isn't just automotive journalists that don't understand evolving technology, I highly doubt congress would change a well understood term just because technology makes the term slightly less actuate.
    • This is exactly why I keep saying we are not ready for human free self-driving. These little "bugs" are may seem like random one-offs. There was also the Waymo that drove between police with drawn weapons and the suspect they were pointing them at. From a software perspective it is easy to understand how those extremely rare situations may not have been programed for, but that is the point. If AI needs to be told to watch out for every possible contingency, then it can never be successful. There will always be the possibility of a first encounter that the AI needs to understand to avoid.
