Installing AHCI support for my Windows XP (in dual boot)

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas!

I am trying to switch my XP installation over from using IDE to ACHI so that I don't have to change the SATA emulation mode in the BIOS every time I want to switch OS's.

Making the registry change is easy - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976

The issue is those registry keys do not exist, and I cannot get the AHCI driver to install. I'm assuming that part of the installation of the AHCI driver is the creation of those keys.

My motherboard is an Asus P8Z68-V Pro. I have downloaded the SATA driver from the support page (its the Intel Storage Matrix or something along those lines) which is the thing that enables my AHCI support, yet whenever I run the installation, it fails with the error 'This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for this..' (paraphrased because I can't remember exactly and I'm not in front of my computer at the moment).

So I suppose my question at the end of the day is - How do I get this AHCI driver to install? and if/when it does, will that create the registry keys that I can then change to allow XP to boot when my SATA emulation mode is set to AHCI in the BIOS?

As a backup if i can't get this working, I'll probably try and slipstream the driver using nLite or something and installing fresh.. Would prefer to avoid that though!

Yes it is SP3 :)

And I use XP purely to run COD4 because Punkbuster won't update to work with Windows 8 -.-

I'm aware there is no generic driver, which is why I've said I've downloaded the AHCI driver for my motherboard, but it is failing to install..

    • Still hate Windows 11, I stuck it on my gaming machine again just for a nose to see what they had done, still as bad. Will restore Windows 10 back on it, suit MS anyway, they don't want me to run Windows 11 on it.
    • Ms did go with the you must sign into an account thing with Windows 8 for a while. The same sort of thing they are doing with Windows now and the MS account.
    • Hello, What sort of Microsoft Authenticator account login approval requests are you getting?  It is a generic authentication app and can be used with all sorts of services (Microsoft Account, Google Account, websites and services that support multi-factor authentication, etc.). • Windows 8? Nah. I found Window 8 worked well, get a third party start menu to get rid of the start screen, I used Start is back and windows 8 was pretty good. I used it even when Windows 10 came out as I found Windows 10 was iffy on my machine at the time was AMD FX Bulldozer based. It was only when I updated the innards to Ryzen that I had no choice but to go to Windows 10 as MS made it difficult to stay with Windows 8. ME, yes, that was not great, I liked the look of it, but it was not stable, shame really because Windows 98SE was the best of the dos based Windows.
