Mouse and Keyboard Center conflict with IE10

Recommended Posts

Weeks ago I noticed a problem with jerky scrolling in IE10. It turned out smooth scrolling was disabled, however I did not disable it. After investigating the issue I found out that my Touch Mouse driver was the cause of it (ipoint.exe, part of Mouse and Keyboard Center). It seems every time ipoint.exe is initialized, it causes the "use smooth scrolling" option in IE10 to uncheck itself.

I haven't found a solution yet but I believe it must be my Touch Mouse driver because if I delete the driver or disable ipoint.exe from running at startup then smooth scrolling stays enabled. As soon as I open Mouse and Keyboard Center (and thus initialize ipoint.exe) the smooth scrolling option unchecks itself.

Having to enable smooth scrolling in IE10 every time I turn on my PC is rather annoying. I can delete the driver but then my Touch Mouse won't work properly. Talked with Microsoft support and apparently they could not reproduce the issue but are looking into it. Days ago a new update for Mouse and Keyboard Center was released (2.1.177), but it didn't fix the issue. In fact, now I can't disable ipoint.exe from starting up since it doesn't appear on Task Manager anymore.

Can anyone running Windows 8 Pro x64 and Mouse and Keyboard Center (x64) verify this? Both Windows 8 and IE10 are up to date.

Unable to verify - the smooth scrolling box remains checked after installing and updating the MS Mouse and Keyboard center.

What could be causing the issue then? Without the drivers installed smooth scrolling stays enabled, always. I have two mice connected to my PC, the Touch Mouse and a gaming mouse. Perhaps that's the problem. Using Chrome for now.

I've had many system wide quirks with Microsoft's Mouse and Keyboard Center, so I simply removed it. It's one of the biggest POS I've ever installed.

Without the drivers my Touch Mouse only works on a basic level. I need the drivers for the mouse to function properly so I can't remove the drivers.

I've always had Smooth Scrolling disable in IE and Windows as far back as I can remember and scrolling works awesome for me.

I've always found Smooth Scrolling to not scroll nicely.

However, in IE I can't even notice any difference whether the option is checked or not.

Also I use touchpads if that means anything. Either on my laptops or my wireless touchpad.

ASUS Smart Gesture works awesome. Even with mouse scroll set to 1 line at a time, scrolling is super fast.

A mouse couldn't even come close to matching the speed of movement and functionality I can do on a touchpad.

I also have the Microsoft Touch Mouse. The "new" Mouse and Keyboard Center did more harm than good to several of my systems [one of the few updates that I immediately disable in Windows Update now], so I reverted to the original driver for the Touch Mouse (IntelliPoint) which still works like a charm. You may want to try it out - the last version is 8.2.

I had the same problem when using the previous version. And I can't use older versions because then my Touch Mouse won't have support for gestures (which were added around release of Windows 8).

Ah I remember those when I tried Win8, but didn't they replace the old gestures and were aimed heavily at Metro?

The old gestures were aimed at Windows 7. The current ones are aimed at Windows 8. They are pretty good.

Update: Disconnected my gaming mouse but the problem persists. The problem is indeed with Mouse and Keyboard Center. i think I'm going to uninstall it and use my gaming mouse full time instead. Can't stand not having smooth scrolling in IE10, specially since it also controls smooth scrolling in some apps, like Mail.

Well the old gestures are also aimed at Windows 8 (e.g. window handling [snap, maximize, minimize, Expos?,...]) - unless you're using Metro all the time I'd always go with those gestures...

Those are Windows 7 gestures. There are new ones for Windows 8. Look here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/touch-mouse/3KJ-00001#windows-8

If I had to choose I'd use the Win 7 ones. they seem way more useful to me - especially if you're working on the desktop...

If you use mostly the desktop, yes. But since I use metro apps too I prefer the new gestures. Makes it easier to get around the OS. Anyway, I deleted the Touch Mouse drivers and have no problems with smooth scrolling in IE10 (it stays enabled). So until a new update releases for Mouse and Keyboard Center I'll keep using my gaming mouse.

    • I can agree that it is being used in a small capacity. I worked for a company where their engineers still used XP, and when asked why it was because their sensor software wasn't compatible with newer operating systems and the software was discontinued so they couldn't upgrade the software. Given that the sensors were still in use by companies, they had to continue using XP to support the sensor, otherwise the price to the company would have gone into the millions or billions. Our response was simple: Ok, you can keep the XP machine. But we're removing it from the network. "But then it can't access the Internet or folder shares!" Yup, kinda the point. If someone wants to continue using an unsecure OS they can do, I have no problem with that. But it should be isolated. Simple. I had a fight with a guy in the engineering department for weeks before he finally relented. But we digress.   What do I plan on doing to commemorate the anniversary? Nothing. I have fond memories of the OS, but at the end of the day it's just an OS. If I had some time I might see if I could install it on my Raspberry Pi for a laugh. But my reflex memory with today's OS ideas would probably get me frustrated and I'd uninstall it after 5 mins.
