I was wondering how I can play SimCity via Origin in resolution 1600x900 on my notebook?

So far, only the 4:3 resolutions are mentioned.

I'd think you need newer drivers then since the game definitely supports that res.

I can't really tell what graphics part is in that laptop, but http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm

Graphics drivers state: ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series

I have already the 13.1 (latest) drivers installed from ati.com.

Maybe ATi needs to update to 13.2 or something?

Another option might be that SC cannot be played on Windows 8...

SC works fine in 8. Don't know if it'll help or not but you might try the 13.2 beta, only game I've had problems with them on is Warframe.

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst132BetaDriver.aspx

SC states that although my graphics card seems newer it doesn't meet up the minimum specs and therefore is in some sort of " alternate" lower-setting play mode.

Strange because the minimal specs are ATI Radeon HD2x00 or better and I have a 5470 (though Mobile edition)

Can this be the cause for not having 1600x900?

Go to the 13.2 betas (no later than beta 5, with 6 recommended).

I have the same GPU (the HD5450, despite being a Mobility part, also sees discrete duty in desktops, primarily HTPCs and SFF PCs), and I've seen some surprising performance gains in all my games (including, of all games, Crysis 3, which has me severely boggled as Crysis as a series is not exactly GPU friendly, let alone low-end GPU friendly).

You mean the popup on first launch complaining about your shtty video card? :p everyone gets it.

Here's another issue - despite that being a Mobility part, give the *desktop* Catalysts for Windows 8 a shot.

Why would I make such a seemingly-silly suggestion?  That selfsame Mobility GPU is also a *desktop* part - the only HD5450s (and slight-upgrade HD5470s) are basically Mobility parts that also appeared in desktop (single-slot and passive-cooled) PCI Express and even PCI clothes.  I had one (which was just replaced with a GTX 550 Ti), and I *never* used Mobility drivers with it.

The reasons why AMD would create such a critter make surprising sense - HTPCs, SFF cases, and low power usage due to not requiring a fan.

It's not necessarily a *bad* GPU for light gaming - I had mine for two years and only replaced it a mere barely two DAYS ago.  (And, to be quite honest, I would not have done that if I hadn't been able to snag my GTX 550 Ti for the Supremely Silly price tag of $63.49 - including sales tax.)

    • AltSendme 0.4.1 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
    • OK so SearXNG is a meta search engine that you can install locally or use via a public instance. It scrapes other search engines which you choose and then sorts the results. Not as complicated as multiple relays
