SyFy greenlights 'Helix,' new apocalyptic TV series from 'Battlestar Galactica' creator

The SyFy television network this week officially greenlit Helix, a new scripted series fromBattlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald D. Moore. Thursday's announcement confirmsearlier reports of Moore's involvement, though the network has yet to name a release date, saying only that the show will debut "later this year."

In a press release, SyFy described Helix (a working title) as "an intense thriller" about a team of scientists from the Center for Disease Control. After being sent to the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, they soon become entangled in a far more apocalyptic affair, facing "a terrifying life-and-death struggle that holds the key to mankind?s salvation or total annihilation."

There's no word yet on casting, though the film's producers boast a sterling pedigree. Joining Moore as executive producers are Lynda Obst, who produced Contact in 1997, and Steven Maeda, who served as co-executive producer on Lost, and worked as a story editor on The X-Files.

Via Deadline, we?ve learned that ?Hannibal,? ?Breaking Bad? and ?Twilight? director David Slade will helm the pilot episode for Syfy and Moore?s ?Helix,? which was recently given a 13-episode order.

Produced by Sony Pictures TV and written by Cameron Porsandeh, Moore?s ?Helix? follows a team of scientists investigating a possible disease outbreak at an Arctic research facility who find themselves trying to protect the world from annihilation. Under show-runner Steven Maeda (?LOST,? ?CSI:Miami?) the series will start production this summer for likely late 2013 debut.

Syfy?s upcoming buzzworthy Ron Moore project ?Helix? has yet to shoot a single frame of official footage, but you?d never know it from the buzz and advertising floating around Comic-Con 2013. Supporting the spread of ?Helix? is the first major casting announced today, that ?The Killing? star Billy Campbell will take the lead role in the sci-fi thriller, which has also issued a brand-new teaser!

Deadline first revealed the casting, namely that Campbell would play the leading role of Dr. Alan Farragut, an emotionally troubled CDC pathologist. Farragut has recently endured and continues to get over a failed marriage, wherein his wife had an affair with his brother, the same brother who now needs his help after becoming infected with a deadly disease.

DR. ALAN FARRAGUT (Billy Campbell)

 

As a top pathologist at the CDC, he is first and foremost a man of science, having dedicated his life to understanding, controlling and containing viruses and infectious diseases. An affair between his wife, Julia Walker, and his brother, Peter Farragut, has left Alan closed off emotionally. Now, he finds himself forced to deal with emotions old and new when tasked to save his estranged brother Peter who has become infected with a deadly virus.

 

DR. HIROSHI HATAKE (Hiroyuki Sanada)

 

Brimming with confidence, menace, hypnotic charm and brilliance, he is the true mastermind behind Arctic Biosystems. As our team arrives at the base, Hatake?s charm will give way to his mysterious and sometimes ominous presence.

 

DR. JULIA WALKER (Kyra Zagorsky)

 

Cellular Biologist. Strong, independent, and smart ? a nononsense kind of woman. Walker was doing ground-breaking research with virus vectors at the CDC when her affair with Peter, a momentary lapse in judgment, imploded her entire world. She isolated herself in fieldwork only to be brought back into the fold when she?s notified of Peter?s illness.

 

DR. SARAH JORDAN (Jordan Hayes) 

 

Virologist. Whip smart, ambitious, and calculated, yet incredibly na?ve. A control freak at heart, Jordan excels at being able to construct highly controlled experiments and is quickly becoming one of the greatest viral pathologist of her time, but, for Jordan, her rise to notoriety isn?t happening fast enough.

 

MAJOR SERGIO BALLESEROS (Mark Ghanim?)

 

A military engineer with a dark secret. A childhood surrounded by death while growing up in the favelas of Brazil led to an adulthood mired in black ops and clandestine missions.

 

DANIEL AEROV (Meegwun Fairbrother)

 

Hatake?s right-hand man and adopted son. Taciturn, guarded. He?s the very definition of a follower. Daniel is Hatake?s loyal retainer. This base and Hatake are all he?s ever known of the outside world or of family.

 

Dr. DOREEN BOYLE (Catherine Lemieux)

 

An accomplished veterinary pathologist, she has seen and heard just about everything. Some may think she?s a little rough around the edges but for Doreen, she sees it as well-voiced pragmatisms.

 

DR. PETER FARRAGUT (Neil Napier)

 

Alan?s brother. Charming and charismatic but flawed. Jealousy has been his ultimate downfall, particularly of his brother?s success. Then came Walker. We first meet Peter after he?s been infected by a deadly and mysterious virus.

MPC-HC is based on the original Guliverkli project (which is no longer maintained) and contains many additional features and bug fixes. As the continuation of the original Media Player Classic, MPC-HC isn’t flashy but it works with nearly any media format. MPC-HC uses DXVA technology to pass decoding operations to your modern video card, enhancing your viewing experience. And MPC-HC supports both physical and software DVDs with menus, chapter navigation, and subtitles. Overview of features A lot of people seem to be unaware of some of the awesome features that have been added to MPC-HC in the past years. Here is a list of useful options and features that everyone should know about: Dark interface Menu > View > Dark Theme When using dark theme it is also possible to change the height of the seekbar and size of the toolbar buttons. Options > Advanced Video preview on the seekbar Options > Tweaks > Show preview on seek bar Adjust playback speed Menu > Play > Playback rate The buttons in the player that control playback rate take a 2x step by default. This can be customized to smaller values (like 10%): Options > Playback > Speed step Adjusting playback speed works best with the internal audio renderer. This also has automatic pitch correction. Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer MPC-HC can remember playback position, so you can resume from that point later Options > Player > History You can quickly seek through a video with Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel. You can jump to next/previous file in a folder by pressing PageUp/PageDown. You can perform automatic actions at end of file. For example to go to next file or close player. Options > Playback > After Playback (permanent setting) Menu > Play > After Playback (for current file only) A-B repeat - You can loop a segment of a video. Press [ and ] to set start and stop markers. You can rotate/flip/mirror/stretch/zoom the video Menu > View > Pan&Scan This is also easily done with hotkeys (see below). There are lots of keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions to control the player. They can be customized as well. Options > Player > Keys Tip: there is a search box above the table. You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites Put yt-dlp.exe or youtube-dl.exe in the MPC-HC installation folder. Then you can open website URLs in the player: Menu > File > Open File/URL You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a copy Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp/youtube-dl, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder. Several YDL configuration options are found here: Options > Advanced This includes an option to specify the location of the .exe in case you don't want to put it in MPC-HC folder. Play HDR video This requires using madVR or MPC Video Renderer.       Microsoft will finally let you sign in to Edge with a Google account by Usama Jawad As things currently stand, Microsoft Edge only allows you to sign in to the browser with a Microsoft Account (MSA). This allows you to sync your browser settings and other data across other devices, as long as you sign in with the same account. However, Microsoft is now modifying this mechanism in a way that will likely please many users. In an update to its Microsoft 365 Roadmap, Microsoft has indicated that it will soon let users sign into Edge using a Google account from the profile menu and the Edge sign-in screen. This will be in addition to the MSA login option, and it opens up new doors for people who prefer using Edge, but cannot be bothered to configure a Microsoft account. This brings several advantages such as the ability to sync your data across devices using just a Google account. It may even facilitate flexible single sign-on (SSO) experiences where you can quickly login to websites and services through a single Google account that is presented as the preferred sign-in option. Up until now, Microsoft allowed customers to indirectly use a Google account, by configuring a Google account as a Microsoft account, or by setting up a one-way sync option between Edge and Chrome. This is a rather interesting development, especially considering that Google Chrome still limits you to a Google account sign-in, but it will be interesting to see if the company reciprocates Microsoft's gesture in the future. This is not the only recent instance in which Microsoft has extended a handshake to Google via Edge. In April 2026, it began tracking the development of a work search banner for Google Search queries, just like the one present in Edge. However, if we go back almost seven years, to January 2020, Microsoft had emphasized that it had no plans to "integrate Google services into Microsoft Edge by default", in response to people requesting Google sign-in services on Edge. Fast-forward to today, and Microsoft is planning to release this feature in July 2026, with IT admins having the option to control its availability on Windows and macOS through the NonMicrosoftAccountSignInEnabled policy.
