Hey, that looks nice! I'm a big fan of black. The theme sure beats the weird text color / window color combinations in Windows 8.

Do you have any screenshots of it while in use?

Here's one:

Nice theme but isn't that the old explorer from Windows 7? Will this theme replace the ribbon explorer? If not, I'd like to see a screenshot with the ribbon to see how it blends with this.

I thought the same thing at first, but from DeviantArt:

Theme requires ribbon disabler:

Needs transparency option.

Transparency in windows 8?

Yes it is possible (through high contrast hack), but that's not the point of the theme. Also, the way the theme has been design, it would be hard to make it transparent.

This might just be the first dark visual style that I like. It's a pity that I can't try it out though... would love to. Is there any chance you could make a version that works with the default Explorer (i.e. with the Ribbon)?

I would like to, but the Ribbon isn't very customizable, especially with dark themes.

Oh, alright. Well, I'll disable the Ribbon and give it a spin anyway. :) More fun than re-installing Windows which was my plan for the evening. :p

Edit: Not for me... As I said, never was a fan of dark themes. On the other hand, my lady is sold on it. ;)

I really like the theme but is there a UXTheme patch I need to install for it? I'm new to windows 8 but I rememebr there being a UX theme patch for windows xp and 7. If someone can point me in the right direction that would be great because I used the ribbon disabler and put the files in "C:\Windows\Resources\Ease of Access themes" but when I apply it what I get is not anywhere near what it looks like in the preview image. Thanks for your help, I'll be happy once I have got this theme running :)

Yup, you need to patch/override your UXTheme.dll file.

I suggest using UXStyle, but that's only for x64. There's Ultra UXTheme Patcher, but previous version of this has been known to cause issues in Windows 8.

I really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction! I'll give UX Style a go! If I have complications would you mind if I PM you? Thanks again!

I purchased Start8 just now. Do you think you could lend a hand to make it look like yours in the screenshot? I installed the orb but the menu is white for some reason. Thanks

EDIT: I think the RGB value should do just fine.

I suggest using StartIsBack instead of Start8.

Thanks for the suggestion but I already purchased it. If I can figure out the right rgb it should look fine. ill look into startisback too, though

SEC8ktf.jpg I think it turned out alright. thanks

Select the Windows 7 skin in Start8. This will enable my skin, however, it's doesn't look quite right in Start8. Start8 unfortunately isn't the real start menu, so some of the settings applied in my theme doesn't work in it. That's why I recommended StartIsBack, since it's the real start menu.

  • 2 weeks later...

I downloaded the update and put it in my theme folder and when I double clicked it I got some random colored transparent theme going on and not the old beautiful base theme. WTF did I do wrong?!

This is how I update my themes:

1. Use a different theme (such as default aero)

2. Delete the theme files (including folder) that you want to update

3. Put in the new files

4. apply theme

If you can't delete the folder, log off and back on and try again.

    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
