Mockingbird
My Intel Core i7 920 is running extremely hot and is causing the computer to freeze. The processor is running at stock speed and stock voltage. The computer is currently Internet Explorer with three tabs open and RealTemp. I've already vacuum the computer and made sure the heatsink is properly attached to the processor. Detection
Check the heatsink is attached properly, thermal paste is good, fan is spinning, heatsink is not clogged up with crap Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1141910-intel-core-i7-920-running-extremely-hot/#findComment-595579726 Share on other sites
abysal
If you're using the stock Intel cooler, there's a good chance one of the push pin clips is loose, preventing the heatsink from making proper contact with the cpu. Mockingbird
Check the heatsink is attached properly, thermal paste is good, fan is spinning, heatsink is not clogged up with crap Yes, the heatsink is properly attached: that's the first thing I've check. I've also vacuum everything (especially the heatsink). The processor fan is definitely spinning. If you're using the stock Intel cooler, there's a good chance one of the push pin clips is loose, preventing the heatsink from making proper contact with the cpu. This is a problem I've had last year. This time I've checked and the pins are already tight. abysal
I'd recommend to try and re-seat the heatsink-fan again. You'll want to wipe off any old heat transfer compound and re-apply a small rice amount of new compound. Semtex
Did You have any system resets with this temps? Maybe Your thermal grease is "out of date", change it for a good start. Also check Your temps in BIOS. Quite possible that soft shows wrong values or sensor is death. The processor fan is definitely spinning. I would remove the heatsink from the CPU, clean off and re-apply the thermal paste, if it was attached correctly with good paste, those temps would be normal Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1141910-intel-core-i7-920-running-extremely-hot/#findComment-595579744 Share on other sites

Mockingbird
OK, so we know that sensor is OK. As mention i other posts, change thermal grease. I will see where to get some since the grease is the one that came with the stock cooler. Semtex
Nahhh, You can get some good AC MX 2 grease in almost any comp shop ;) EDIT> You can also open Your case and look on temps then, let Us know if become lower. Maybe You have some airflow problems inside (still not explanation for so high temps but can be one of factors). ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1141910-intel-core-i7-920-running-extremely-hot/#findComment-595579768 Share on other sites

There's also some plastic hood from the computer case that's hovering over the CPU heatsink. OK, better this then nothing. Maybe You can try to switch this fans, 80mm for back (taking out hot air) and 1200mm on front (pushing cold air inside). Wat's Your temp in house? I can only put the fan according to the fan holes that are already there. Also, my house is currently 70.2 F. Semtex
This is that 2 years old? Or something more fresh, some name on it? If You can leave with open case till tomorrow (or maybe shops are open in Your place, I'm in Europa, so excuse me) Then buy something better, but if You don't want wait use it, can't be worse then now, if the grease isn't dry as sand ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1141910-intel-core-i7-920-running-extremely-hot/#findComment-595579824 Share on other sites

spaceelf
You might clean any dust filters in your case, considering upgrading the HSF to a Coolermaster 212 Evo (the Plus I have is a wonderful thing...I'm using a 920 myself.) And possibly check the backplate under the motherboard...I assume the stock heatsink came with one. If the backplate is off the HSF will likely be off whether it seems properly attached or not. (I had issues with the stupid backplate recently myself...sigh.) Also the HS on the southbridge doesn't need the annoying little 40mm fan unless you do SLI or heavy overclocking. Semtex
If it is still "wet" You can use it, but I think till You get better one (ASAP) This change can give us now some answers.
