Mockingbird
So I went ahead and took off the heat sink. Underneath there was very little thermal grease (only enough to cover 1/3 off the processor). I wiped off the grease with a paper towel (I don't have anything else) and squeeze a pea size grease onto the center of the processor. Unfortunately, the pin on the stock heat sink is very lousy and I broke one of them, but everything else is OK. Semtex
Better then was, IMO. Look for better cooler, something with 120mm fan. :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1141910-intel-core-i7-920-running-extremely-hot/page/2/#findComment-595579938 Share on other sites
Detection
That's better, might be worth investing in a decent cooler Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1141910-intel-core-i7-920-running-extremely-hot/page/2/#findComment-595579940 Share on other sites

I don't know that if I keep removing the heatsink, how many working pins would be left working. Thanks for all your help! Detection
Good thing about custom coolers, you remove all traces of the stock one and bolt the new one through the board so don't have to worry about pins ;) Mockingbird 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1141910-intel-core-i7-920-running-extremely-hot/page/2/#findComment-595579962 Share on other sites

Note: I don't need a $100 cooler. Detection
Any recommendation? Note: I don't need a $100 cooler. I'm AMD so don't have any experience with Intel coolers, someone here will no doubt I have my 965 overclocked to just under 4GHz and have been using the same ?35 cooler for about 3 years, idle 30c~ load <50c~, you don't need to spend a fortune to get decent cooling :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1141910-intel-core-i7-920-running-extremely-hot/page/2/#findComment-595579996 Share on other sites

spaceelf
Any recommendation? Note: I don't need a $100 cooler. I just said the CM Hyper 212 Evo. It's $35 and works beautifully, my CPU temps run around 35-45 now instead of 50-60. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1141910-intel-core-i7-920-running-extremely-hot/page/2/#findComment-595580048 Share on other sites
