Is it because you guys are american that you use the left shift? (IE. are the keyboards different)

my left shift key is tiny, I guess I use the right because its bigger.

I just assumed everyone used that one but im the odd one out lol

I type the same way on UK and US keyboards... just what I'm used to I suppose :)

I AM SORRY, I CAN'T READ. WOULD YOU PLEASE INCREASE YOUR FONT SIZE.

Just kidding.

People are entitled to their perferences when they come up to their keyboard. I guess depends what they learn from typing class at their school.

I learned typing on my own computer myself when I got my computer. Before that, I typed with my 2 index fingers.

hAVE FUN, nEOWIN PEOPLE!

heheh

Left Shift, mostly.

Except when entering passwords with one hand, for instance - because I want to check Neowin at work and I'm stuffing face at the same time.

Caps Lock still serves a purpose in some games, where toggle type keys are useful.

Eating... right. :shifty:

So, when you said that you always use the right shift (if I remember correctly), then when you type keys on the right of the keyboard with your right hand, you're also holding down the right shift with your right pinkie? Sounds awkward.

not at all. My two index fingers are on F and J. I just move my pinky on my right hand a little bit and hold down shift. I dont move my hands at all when I type. However, its not the *correct* way to touch type as I never actually learned. I just taught myself. I use some of the wrong fingers for some keys. But mostly its correct.

UK - Right handed - left shift key.

I think people who don't use computers often, or have recently (as in over the past few years) use caps lock.

Why? I guess it might make more sense to them. Some keyboards actually have "caps lock" written on the key whereas shift keys just have an up arrow which isn't very telling as to it's function.

Do you have particularly small hands? I find it very uncomfortable to hit the right shift key in normal typing position with my right-little-finger.

I always use the pinky on my left hand for the left shift :)

Actually that's a good point. My grandad is in his 70's and has only used a word processor/PC for the last 10-15 years. He used to type on a typewriter in the 60's as an accountant and he uses shift. I think also some laptop users prefer caps lock over shift as the key is within reach.

My wife uses Caps lock and it really annoys me. A waste of a button press.

My Dad doubleclicks Hyperlinks, and will type "ebay" in the address bar and hit enter, instead of adding ".co.uk" on the end.

I only use caps lock when I'm angry. Luckily for you, I'm in a good mood. :|

I've been using computers for many years and I do that out of laziness.... :shifty:

Can't stand people who don't know there double click icons from their hyperlinks.

We need another poll to resolve this! :D

I think it's fair to say both of you win.

My coworker was using the caps lock key to capitalize ALL the letters, regardless if it was the beginning of the sentence or something mid-sentence. It drove me nuts, and I had to teach them about the Shift key.

Man!

Some sloppy a** typists here then if you've never used the right side shift key!!

Why in the world would anyone use the caps lock key for just 1 capital letter!!

Why in the world would you disable the caps lock key also? Again, more totally sloppy typists here, huh? Might have a bunch of geeks here, but not many of you ever took a typing class in school?

Left shift key. Even when writing full words or sentences in caps, I tend to hold it down with my pinky and carry on typing as usual.

The only time I use the right shift is I have something in my right hand and have to use only the left hand to type. Even then most of the time I end up stretching my hand trying to reach the right-most keys with my thumb while the pinky is on left shift. Only after a few moments of palm acrobatics do I remember there is another shift on the right side too :p

    • No, "a great deal" for 32GB of DDR5 is $50, not $350. I mean I see what you mean, that it's a decent price compared to what's currently available, but you really should put a disclaimer in this articles explaining that it's still multiple times more expensive than it used to be.
    • Linux 7.1 stable launch looms as Linus Torvalds releases the final release candidate by Paul Hill Linus Torvalds has just released what’s expected to be the final release candidate of Linux 7.1, rc7. The Linux founder said that this RC is not small, but smaller than recent releases, which is a good sign because he expects the stable version to drop next week if things continue on this trajectory. Linux kernels see a merge window for the first two weeks of their life, where developers add new features, then there are about seven or eight weeks of release candidates before the stable version. Typically, there are seven release candidates, but if more time is needed, then an eighth release candidate is released too. This week’s RC’s biggest area of fixes was for GPUs, with networking just behind. Torvalds said that the rest of the release was “pretty random and spread out” with some architecture fixes, driver fixes, filesystem improvements, and build fixes for more unusual configs. In terms of specific pieces of hardware receiving improvements in this update, we had more AMD Zen6 models supported and fixes for AMD SDMA 7.1 and GFX11. Hardware that got improvements includes Lenovo laptops, HONOR laptops, and MSI laptops. Here are the changelogs for those: ASoC: amd: acp: Add DMI quirk for Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 15ASH11 Input: atkbd - add DMI quirk for Lenovo Yoga Air 14 (83QK) Input: atkbd - skip deactivate for HONOR BCC-N's internal keyboard ASoC: amd: yc: Add MSI Raider A18 HX A9WJG to quirk table ASoC: amd: yc: Enable internal mic on MSI Bravo 17 C7VF When the stable Linux 7.1 is released, it will be up to distribution maintainers, such as Canonical and Red Hat, to release the update to their users via the update manager. Some versions of Linux will get it before others, and some will never get it at all. Fedora and Arch-based distros will be among the first to get it, though. If you don’t get it, the security fixes will be backported to your system’s kernel, so you won’t be at risk, but you won’t get newer hardware support, which is fine if your computer works now.
