Been looking to upgrade my computer spec for sometime now. Its just not cutting it anymore. I just got a MacBook pro 2013 and it out performance it. Anyway, I was looking at the difference between AMD FX and Intel i7 sandy bridge and the two big difference is that the i7 is a little bit faster but cost $100 more than the FX 4.0GHz. Is it worth the price tag or I should stick with the AMD? I would also have to upgrade my motherboard and RAM. Don't remember my CPU because I. Not home at the moment but I do it knows a AMD CPU from 2009.

Also is 8GB ram enough or 16GB is the way to go?

My graphic card is geforce 560ti

i7 hands down.

Cast your eyes over the following

The AMD chip does so well because there are a lot of synthetic benchmarks in the tests, and it's still pretty damn poor. Real world, the AMD chip isn't even considered by Toms for their builds.

Intel i7 sandy bridge

Look for Ivy Bridge, while you're at it.

AMD is... decent, but a) eats 50% more power so the cost savings will be progressively less than projected b) will require an aftermarket cooling solution unless you already live very close to an airport (and are therefore used to large Boeings taking off)

Figure out how much your willing to spend.

Then determine which AMD FX chip or Intel i7 chip is in that price range.

Then check cpu benchmark reviews between them.

YounGmessiah, also has a good point, what the purpose of the machine?

Before Javik comes bashing AMD, this is an interesting discussion about it: http://www.neowin.ne...__fromsearch__1

Edit: and please read it all because in there Javik also bashes AMD, it's just that he "tilts" the facts towards intel while there is proof that AMD is also good.

Edit2: also note for alwaysoncoffebreak, he also likes to bash it too ;) but truth is, my system is AMD and it runs wonders.

Well ill tell you guys besides from power consumption I have another machine with the FX-8150 and the 560Ti and it runs wonderfully.. Yes its closed looped by a H60, but it runs great and is pretty comparable to my i5-3570K

I would suggest Intel still, but I have achieved great results from an AMD as well..

Don't bother. I've been trough this couple of times already. No matter how much you point out that the FX is right on the price they still suck for everyone.

<<<<<<<----- AMD A6-3410MX APU here, can play crysis 3 on Medium settings no problem (this on a laptop that has a 6750m) Note that I overclock them with no heat issues nor a complex mod. (it's still far more than portable)

Isnt AMD done anyways with cpus after their next one coming out?

That has nothing to do with any FX series lol

Just pointing out that AMD is good, my processor however is a Phenom II Stars+ architecture though...

Nope. This is pure fud. Steamroller is still coming out in form of CPU's, or I should say it'll be more like PD2.0

Honestly, I'd just get one of the higher clocked i5 CPUs. An i7 doesn't really give many benefits except for hyperthreading. If you're doing a lot of virtual machines, then maybe the extra threads would give benefits. Otherwise just save the money and get a higher end i5.

Was making sure, the rumor was..sad..

Well..more and more AMD is focusing on APU's and giving more juice to those but they are not leaving CPU's behind. In my opinion rightfully so, Intel has yet to catch up with the first gen APU igp's so they should rather take advantage of that until they can.

i7. Dollar to dollar the FXs can compete with the i3s and i5s, but once you're in the i7 range, just go with the i7.

<- This

AMD competitively prices there cpu's so the similar price and perform better then the intel in the same price range.

However, you reach a point, AMD has no equivalent to match intel.

It really depends on how much your willing / limit to spending is.

    • I need to understand the rationale of not shipping all of these K2 improvements in a single update/release. It's giving "we will fix Windows 11 but no commitments". It seems to me that they just announce these improvements just to appease the community.
