I found a youtube channel called OSfirstTimer. This kid gives his mom an BUNCH of OSes to try. From LInux, to BeOS to Windows 1.0 to Windows 8. You can go there and watch the videos but i'm going to post the videos of her Trying Windows 7, Vista, Mountain Lion and Windows 8

Completely staged.

I only watched a few minutes of each, but the user was being lead to fail.

On the Mac, she had no problem with her password, but with Win8 she did not know it and it was if it was Win8's fault.

Windows is bad because they keep changing it, but she knows Mac because it never changes (after 10 years, there are no changes? Why have they released 8 different versions for?)

It was put on a VM, and she kept running into issues with the VM, complaining about how slow it was.

She praised the Mac because the desktop had no icons on it and had no clutter, but the Win8 computer she complained because there were no icons on it.

Having the most commonly used apps on the Mac in the dock was easier than having them in the cluttered start menu of Win7, but having the most commonly used apps in front of you in Win8 was confusing?

What does downloading and installing FireFox on Win8 have to do with the usability of the OS? And skimming through the Mac video, she was not asked to download FF there. Why not?

She claimed that FF loads instantly on her computer, but IE takes too long to load. Well, they are running in a VM, which is going to be slow, but she claims it is a problem with Win8.

She says that FireFox looks "sort of" like FireFox on her other computer. There is not one damn difference between FF on the different OSes, but it means Win8 is to be hated.

He claims that installing Win8 is a "fine of $100". No he has not biases whatsoever.

It was just the usual whiners who try to make Win8 look bad. She says that she wants to use Win7, but told that is not what she wants. She says she wants Vista, and he tells her that is not what she wants. While laughing and mocking her throughout using Win8, and encouraging and helping her while using Mac, I would want to be done with this jerk's pushing and just be done with it also.

The reason she liked the clean look of Vista is because she could still find what she was looking for using the start menu. The reason she didn't like the empty desktop on Windows 8 because to her even though she couldn't locate anything on her computer she thought she could still use the desktop icons.

The latest one he made was supposedly going around asking random strangers a question such as directions, and trying to fit as many OS names into the conversation as possible without the other person noticing, I watched about 15 seconds of it before also coming to the conclusion it was entirely staged

I didn't watch any of the Vista video. She said she liked the Mac desktop because it was empty and "pretty." But the Win8 desktop, which is empty with a nice flower is confusing? And why didn't the boy talking ask her to run a program that is on the Win8 desktop? The Mac was already prepared with Notes down in the dock, he could have easily asked her to run the weather app in Win8 and the Weather gadget in OSX? But instead he specifically asked her to run one that was already setup. It is like how people whine about how the Smoked by WinPhone is not fair because there is a weather app already built in showing the weather, but on an iPhone/Android you need to launch an app.

Like I wrote, I did not watch the whole thing of all of them, so I missed the weather bit. But that does not take away from the argument - the boy could have easily asked her to run a program that was pinned to the Win8 start, but not in the Mac dock. Instead, he wanted her to run a program that keeps notes to make it look more complicated on Win8. And before she even got to the login, she was already complaining that "I don't understand why they need to keep changing everything" - she saw the screen for a total of 2 seconds. How do you know that it changed after seeing the startup screen for 2 seconds unless you were either made to think it was bad before trying, or you had already used it before. And in both cases, it makes this video false since it is supposed to be the first time trying the OS, and if fact, it can be proven that the video is false because they talked about how he had shown her to log in. If she had already been exposed to Win8, then it is not a first time using the OS. And then of course, the Mac video starts off with her smiling, makeup on, and just in a great mood. The Win8 video shows her from the back, she looks like she just woke up still drissed in her robe.

But the fact is, that he was biased and very much leading her into what she should be using. Again, I ask you what does finding, downloading, and installing FireFox have to do with how user [un]friendly Win8 is? He asked her if she should need to pay the Win8 "tax" of $100, did he ask her if she needed to pay the Apple tax? And that did not look like a real Mac, was it a hackintosh? If so, he should have had her install OSX on a PC, and then ask her to rate which is easier to use.

That has been the experience of several people I know who have tried Windows 8.

Neither of my parents had problems with Windows 8. My mother couldn't find the restart button instantly because it moved, but it only took her a minute to find it on her own. She's no computer expert, all she does is use Skype and Chrome.

my parents who are total pc noobs, were saying why the hell is it so complicated to do a task like shutting down... (and yes they love shutting down their from the old school way of thinking that something must be off when its not being used)

after about 3 days they asked me to make it look like their old windows, now running star8 they are happy again....

also they only positive reviews of windows 8 I see are from the bunch of same posters here on neowin

as im the unofficial pc fixer, I have upgraded atleast 10 or so PC's to windows 8 of my parents elderly friends and aunties/uncles etc

they all have unanimously hated win8 and asked to make it look like their old system....

that's why I have a hard time believeing any positive reviews of win 8

because from personal experience and the polarization seen on the internet, win 8 is CLEARLY not a popular option

makes it hard to take people like dot matrix seriously, when you have both personal experience, experience eof family and friends and a world wide web were it being criticized...

People who usually find the restart button fairly quickly on their first attempt just get lucky.

You don't have to close Metro apps, that's part of the point. You use the 4 corners as was shown in a very obvious manner when you first install or use a new computer. Metro apps are not meant to be closed as Windows manages that now, it's managed just like tablets. The concept is so simple, yet it's like everyone ignores the instructions on introduction or cannot pick up an "idiots guide to Windows 8" book at the local library....really?

Anyone using a new OS, be it Linux, Mac whatever, should probably pick up a guide book of some kind so they don't start poking, not knowing what their doing and screw things up...this is why previous windows versions had so many people bringing in computers with software issues and Windows 8 is a little less prone to accidental clicks that cause serious software related issues cause some are hidden better until you educate yourself to know about them. Metro is far more dummy proof in that regard.

Whats funnier if you google up old posts for Windows XP when it first came out...notice all the bashing, many hated XP at first.

Desktop apps still have the red X button btw.

I had no idea how to shut it down first time and I it took me a few minutes of poking around to find it.

Physical off switch..most PC's have them. Most every device is shut off with a physical button, why do PC's get different treatment just cause there is a onscreen one too?

yeh ok that's how most people operate ...... NOT!!!!

my parent are old folk who only use internet to read the newspaper, occasional email and Skype..

they are not going to start reading books on how to use the OS....

the reason they didn't see the charms bar instruction is because they got me to install it, they have no concept of user accounts and such...

everything is autologin...

      just tested it yesterday, a simple page with autoloading ADS takes 60mb....just 1 page for 60 megabytes.   poor people with a limited internet never will visit neolose
