Sony: We know PS4's launch date

Sony has already settled on the date it intends to launch PlayStation 4, the platform holder has suggested.

Reflecting on the console's New York reveal event with EDGE, Sony's Worldwide Studios vice president Michael Denny said "we know our launch date, and we think it's very important that gamers receive that new console experience.

"With that in mind, we just thought it was the right time to set the vision and set the agenda in New York."

Sony has yet to publicly announce a specific release date for PlayStation 4, but has confirmed that the console will launch in at least one territory in 'Holiday 2013'.

It isn't yet known whether the console will launch in the UK this year, despite ongoingteases from retailers.

But if Sony really has settled on a release date for PS4 internally, it would suggest that the firm is relatively far along in the console's production.

Back at the console's announcement in February, SCE UK MD Fergal Gara told VideoGamer.com that one of the reasons it hadn't announced a precise release date was due to the firm "working through all sorts of production schedules".

"Unless we decided it was a year and a half away: you could probably commit to any date you like if you go that far away," he said, "but we want to get it out to market quickly and pricing those various commercial variables to be fully weighed up that we're not fully worked through."

In a report published yesterday, VideoGamer.com spoke to PlayStation 4 developers about the possibilities - and the risks - offered by the console's 8GB GDDR5 RAM.

Thank god for that, I was worried for a minute there, Sony knows it's own consoles release date, panic over :p

I had a similar thought, although I was more thinking along the lines of the PS4 being released, and a month down the line Sony turning around and saying, "wait, what? When did that happen?"

The fact that they say it will be released in at least one country in "holiday 2013" makes me think December for that territory, and January/February for the others. That doesn't make much business sense to me though, the idea that they'll miss the holiday season in all the other territories...

They might know their consoles own release date. Doesn't mean it will be released then. I'm waiting for the mysterious "manufacturing" problems products always get

Either way, i'll be there with one on release day.

Likewise.. if not release day very very soon after.

We know our launch date is a strange thing to say especially when that's the only thing he said, was it followed by If I tell you, I'll have to kill you? or We are waiting for Microsoft to announce their date before we announce ours?

I don't get the point behind this article...

That part might be relevant.

same as the last bit of non news sony released about the PS4(we want more than one type of game, duh). Keeping the hype machine alive.

That's the problem with an early reveal, you have to keep the fires alive with nonsense. meanwhile if you don't reveal anything, EVERYONE is talking about it, and it's on EVERYONE's mind...

Did you just try and suggest MS' next Xbox campaign had been more successful than Sonys on a PR level so far? lol

Honestly, Sony has done a brilliant job thus far with their PS4 reveal. They gave us just enough to get us interested, while also dropping the 8GB GDDR5 bombshell in February. here we are at mid April and hype is still going strong. I'm sure as E3 approaches in June we'll see more leaks/reveals/rumors.Really, what it comes down to now is launch titles and most importantly; how much will it cost?

I think you need to understand the basic of PR

There is NO negative PR. people are talking about the Xbox, it's got media attention and public attention, it's being talked about all the time. simply because MS hasn't said anything and because Sony did. currently the Xbox has a massive amount of mindshare. So when MS holds the official reveal next month. there will be a much bigger following of people following it to see what they say than the ones who watched the sony reveal.

Hype is still strong. seriously outside of these pointless trickle news posts that no one cares about, there's no hype around the PS4. compare this to the same period around the launch of the PS3.

at this point it seems the worst thing Sony did was have an early reveal. Before the reveal the hype level was MUCH higher than it is currently with news and rumors all over the place and everyone wanting to know more. Now it's "Yeah, now we know about the PS4, whatever."

How many next xbox posts and news are there on forums and gaming news sites for every one PS4 lately. Lets' see the only news on the PS4 front lately has been two BS news one stating "we want varied games on our platform"(duh captain obvious) and this "We know when we (want to) release the PS4(provided there's no delays or strategic advantages to delaying it, therefore we're not telling)".

Meanwhile on the Xbox there's basically been a new rumor at least once a day, and updates on existing rumors from new sources constantly.

so if you really have that education you have to admit this and see it for what it is. otherwise. Right now MS has all the mindshare. good or bad at this point it doesn't matter, they're getting people interested in the product, and they haven't even announced it yet. it's the kind of marketing you should dream of.

whatever product they announce on their reveal. they have a massive amount of people interested and following this reveal. peopel that without all this rumor milling wouldn't otherwise care and could easily be swayed by the presentation of an awesome product.

<Thread Cleaned>

I'm getting more and more frustrated with the arguments devolving in to, "you're only saying that because you prefer <product x>." Keep to the topic or we'll be handing out warnings. If you think that someone is a fanboy, just keep it to yourself. If they truly are overzealous in their enjoyment of <product x> then their post will obviously show that without the need for others to point it out.

Not sure how many people have seen this but I didn't want to bump an older thread so figured I'd stick it here. Pretty funny watch and it's only a few mins long, sorry if I'm late to the party with it but just heard it referenced on a podcast and figured I'd share:
