I definitely can shave seconds off with my Kernel customizations. Its like F1 lol Shaving seconds off is rock hard. I imagine it will depend on what else is running on the machine at the time. It might be better to drop to a root prompt and run it from there before the OS has change to load anything else. See if that makes much difference.

Running it in a VM wont be a true test but nice to see results anyway.

I will try on a Quad Core Xeon when I get home for you if that will help

That would be awesome! We are still missing MIPS, Alpha, and PowerPC results too, though. It seems like there isn't much variation within the same architecture, but there is much more variance between architectures. That might be partially due to the limited results we have for everything other than x86; I'm not quite sure.

Thanks for the extra information! Are you running the armel Debian image or the armhf Raspbian variant? Your Raspberry Pi results are very similar to the result I posted of Debian running on an old smartphone. If you are running the armel version, then that comparison makes sense, because the processor and clock speed are almost identical between the two devices. If you are running the armhf variant, then it makes less sense, because the Raspberry Pi's hardware floating unit should be much faster than the software floating point emulation used to obtain my result.

I'm using the Raspbian image. If I had another SD card I'd pop the armel image on it and post the result. Any other takers for that? :)

So I went back to compiling the latest 3.8.8 Stable kernel last night and there is a significant performance decrease, With this test and overall system performance. I am getting >30Seconds with this test and the 3.8 Kernel compared with the 3.9RCx Kernel.

I got a warning once about a million years ago for posting a link to something so I think that's when my profile became restricted :-( I thought that got cleared though along with the warning...

What do you mean, exactly? I have a hard time believing that the Intel processors that Apple puts into their machines are significantly different or "less optimized" than standard Intel processors. If you are referring to the Linux kernel itself, how could the same kernel that runs on other machines be less optimized for the same processor on a Mac? Does the firmware make some difference in these results as well? I don't think it would, since the microcode is built into the kernel or loaded from the root filesystem at runtime, but there could be something that I'm overlooking.

I have an interesting observation that is not strictly related to this thread, but it might be of some minor relevance to your comment. A friend of mine has a Macbook Pro 5.1 and an ASUS EEE PC 1201T. He migrated from using Ubuntu 12.04 on the Macbook Pro to using Ubuntu 12.04 on the EEE a few months ago. He reinstalled Ubuntu on the EEE because the Macbook Pro has an NVIDIA graphics (for which he had to use the proprietary NVIDIA driver) and other hardware-specific configuration hacks in Ubuntu to make it work properly - the EEE needs none of that. Although the EEE has less RAM (2 GB instead of 4GB) and the processor and graphics card are technically weaker, it performs noticeably better than the Macbook Pro (in Ubuntu or OS X). He noticed immediately after he finished configuring his new installation of Ubuntu on the EEE that his boot time was about 1/2 that of his Macbook Pro and programs opened significantly faster.

Im my opinion the GNU/Linux kernel cannot be compared to the Darwin kernel. Simply because they are far to different from each other, Darwin is an amalgamation of the BSD kernel and Mach kernel. Neither of which are a GNU/Linux kernels to my knowledge. Darwin is a hybrid kernel rather than the monolithic GNU/Linux kernel.

I fail to see what doing toy floating point operations is going to prove. What really matters is real world performance. For that reason I think comparisons between floating point operations in Windows, Linux, OS X, and BSD are completely valid. I would be interested in seeing such a comparison, but that was not the OP's purpose in creating this thread. He wanted a point of comparison for making floating point faster in the Linux kernel. I think we have accomplished that satisfactorily by now. If you wanted to devise a floating point test that could run on a couple different operating systems (or even just use this test if you only care about POSIX compliant systems) and created a new thread about it, I would participate.
