Gah! Now I'm getting constant errors!

"scvhost.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close"

That or it just tells me it has to reboot and gives me a minute to close stuff and involves the same file. Bad stuff... I don't want to have to reinstall AGAIN! I've done it 3 times in the last two days due to those stupid VIA drivers...

Can anyone help?

makin my super XP CD atm :p

2 XP installations together for only 350MB :p

that leaves space for an unattended autopatcher! :p

gonna d/l the full december version and gonna use that to install the updates and/or tweaks after a unattended setup..

1 question:

whould i run Autopatcher in guirunonce or in cmdlines.txt?

Considering there are 34 pages here, I'm not about to read through every single one ;) but...what about optional packages (download only the features you want to install)?

Now I'm not talking about picking and choosing every program, but a group of programs/patches...sort of like this:

Download A: Fixes/Tweaks

Download B: Fixes/Tweaks/Apps

Download C: Tweaks/Apps

I also had an idea for something like those "Install on Demand" programs that downloaded each app that you wanted to download as well, but that would most likely require a lot of mirrors and an excellent installer that could download from the internet.

(By the way, many of your mirrors are down. I'm in the process of downloading AP for the first time and would be happy to mirror the file on my site.)

It is my opinion that the installer should not work if SP1 is not installed. Since you have the ability to check the registry for previously installed updates in the December release, why not check that SP1 is already installed before allowing any auto or manual updates?

Is this feasable?

Actually it is... we have it not work if other OS's are discovered, and since we've rewritten it for Dec, I believe it will work like that now. :)

@jpr5 - Love that CD there! :D

@Twisted Maniac - No drivers, but I'll include documentation on how to do it (it is possible, don't worry). Also, I'd run it in GUIRunOnce.

@ArgoN - Maybe for $40 I'll send out some Tequilla with it... but I'll need proof of ID. :p

@acetken - That sounds almost like the Blaster Virus. Hmm... I'd honestly suggest reinstalling one more time and doing it in this order: Format, Install WIndows XP, Install SP1, Run AutoPatcher. That should fix everything. :)

@blackice912 - Unfortunately for our own reasons, we won't offer an "Install on Demand" version. Though we will have a Bonus Pack of extra Tweaks and Programs that can be downloaded with the Dec Update. As far as hosting, please PM me so we can discuss that. :D

Nah. Just backwards-incompatibile patches. No viruses. I've already reformatted 4 times in the last 2 days due to the damned VIA driver...

What's wrong with the VIA drivers? They have never caused me grief... what are they doin' exactly?

It's the new 4.50's. They pulled them because of mine and a few other people's cases. They caused complete hard drive failure. I couldn't get into Safe Mode even. Sucked hard. My backup drive was also lost. I was running my small business from there and it wiped out all my records and the stuff I do. It was horrible. It even does it to me on a fresh install. I installed because I was told by support to try the most recent drivers.

As can be understood, I was mad. And posted with some other people on the VIA site angrily. I never swore, or flamed, but...

Whole lotta complaints, and the fanboys on the site came on and called me stupid every post or so. 'Twas rather discouraging. Plus, I had an official VIA person tell me they were going to send me some contact info, but they haven't yet after nearly 3 days.

Anyway, I also have another feature request. Would you do up an box to hide the logoff option and maybe the help one on the taskbar? I like my taskbar small, and I never use either...

i always hated VIA's drivers... back in my PIII 733 days, i had a VIA based mobo... and oh yeah... their damned drivers sucked big time! Well... i went ahead and didnt install them anymore on my WinXP installation, and everything would work just as good!

Hmmm... that sucks about the VIA drivers man... sorry to hear it. As far as the other tweaks you requested... yeah, I'll include those if I can find 'em. :)

A VIA-based computer will work just fine, as you have discovered, without loading the VIA drivers. HOWEVER, you will not be able to take advantage of any of the advanced VIA chipset enhancements without loading the drivers.

Translation: Just because it's working, doesn't mean it's working right.

I see this a lot in my business from people who build their own computers. Once we get the drivers installed, they think we upgraded their computer because it runs faster and more reliably then it ever did before.

I've been doing this professionally for over 13 years and issues with VIA drivers have been very rare. Driver issues have been more common with Diamond and ATI video cards then when any other manufacturer, in my experience. Thankfully, Diamond is gone. ATI on the other hand, is still, to this day, struggling with driver issues.

The new VIA Hyperion drivers are recommended for anyone who has a VIA-based chipset motherboard and wants the best performance and reliability out of their system. No matter what operating system you use, it is highly recommended that you install the 4-n-1 VIA Hyperion drivers.

If you refuse to install the VIA drivers, you shouldn't have purchased a VIA-based chipset motherboard, or you should be happy with a computer that is running slower than it should be.

Later today, Geoff Keighley will be bringing the 2026 edition of Summer Game Fest live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.       I think the car analogy is more this: Left hand drive, basic commands on the left side of the infotainment screen. Right hand drive, basic commands on the right side of the infotainment screen. Granted, you're not swapping between the two often so it's doesn't really work. But it's to do with the proximity of you (your mouse, or the driver) to the controls.

      I mean, the old one was broken and so stupidly complex for many users, so I don't see that as a feasible option. A context menu needs to be simple to use, and for me the Windows 11 style actually worked really well for me, and many others. I used to have to scroll the damn context menu just to get to "file properties" in Windows 10. That was not a good experience, and I'm sure you'd agree. What they're trying to do is make it the best of both worlds, as clearly you'd prefer the Win10 style. I'm curious how they're going to do this.
