Is Media Temple's Nitro the best?

Question

Is there a server more powerful than Media Temple's Nitro Server? I might make use of Railgun as well.

The server can handle at a max of 65,000 connections at once. But I plan on sending at least 100,000 - 1,000,000 visitors in a day.

What exactly are you going to be hosting? Do you already have a site up with 20,000 hits a day? Just asking to make sure you don't go overboard..

To be honest with you, it might be cheaper to buy some Dell Poweredge 2950s off ebay and put them in a data center.. That would cost you far less..

I'll soon have a Social Network (http://mylovr.com). Currently yes, and many other site's previously. I actually have several sites that will receive a lot of traffic. Enough to generate up to $20k a month on AdSense each month.

Cool, I just wanted to make sure.. Didn't know if this was a start up.. Most people doing a start up will think their site will be instantly a hit and invest a **** ton of money into it.. Sense that is not the case..

Have you considered doing the hosting yourself from a datacenter? If you had the know-how.. it could save you a ton of money and better performance.. Maybe one of the Neowin admins will chime in.. I believe they have their own servers and renting space in a datacenter..

I do all my own hosting, but my sites don't generate a crap ton.. I might do 5TB a month

Have you done any research on that company? It seems to not be all that hot..

I've hosted straight from my Mac Mini on my own 101Mbps internet. It does way better than Host Gator and GoDaddy using Linux Ubuntu on a Virtual Box.

I've had Media Temple on a dedicated virtual, and they're amazing. Media Temple was made for developers in my opinion.

I'll look about the Data Center by the time the space runs out, because I'm more in favor of load balancing when the server has enough to chew on. :)

If you are generating 20k a month already, you should be looking at co-location hosting and not running sites off your Mac Mini...

Plus I wouldn't be using someone's likeness/picture on a site that's going to generate 1 million unique hits a month, once you get sued that $20k a month isn't going to be enough for the legal fees.

At the moment, I'm actually in search of a place to live, I'm only 19 going 20 in a week, so being eligible for financing and whatnot isn't as easy for me :/

Don't worry, I'll be having actual people work with me to produce original content instead of working what's off of Google. :p

Wait, you're looking at that much traffic, and yet hosting off your mac mini...?

At the moment, I'm not, I'm temporarily running on an GoDaddy's because I'm in search of a place to rent. Once I get a server like MT's Nitro, I plan on throwing down all the traffic. This is mostly planned for the Social Network, remember that.

$20k a month off adsense? Be interested to know how you've projected this figure when Google themselves say there is no way to determine exactly in advance what you'll get.

In any event it'll be in the hundreds of thousands (to millions) of visits. Quite the jump from hosting a holding page off your home connection on a mac mini.

As for Media Temple...there's nothing particularly special or spectacular about their servers...they just tend to cost more than the competition. A bit like the Apple of web servers...flashy and well presented but in reality not better than any other provider. They also have bandwidth limits which is pretty idiotic based on the obscene pricing. You could get similar servers for a fraction of the price elsewhere...unmetered.

I'm detecting fantasy day-dreaming in this thread.

Why would I be fantasizing? I can reach around $20k because I have the ability to draw traffic, especially with a couple of partners with those abilities.

I'm aware of the prices and metering, that's why I started this topic in the first place..

You can dilute the impact of your product by offering too much information to your competitors before you launch, nothing wrong with a bit of hype though :)

I'm aware, broski. I just don't like doubt.

If you do this frequently, you'd likely be better off with Azure or EC2, easy to scale on demand (up or down).

You guys are probably right about the demand with Azure or EC2. I was also thinking about Cloud just in case a server were to go down or images and files could be corrupt on a process.

Hey, Mr. XXIV --

Aaron from (mt) Media Temple here.

First of all, thanks for starting a conversation about this. There's a lot of information out there, and a lot of misinformation, so it's always nice to see people doing their due diligence when it comes to making a pretty important decision.

The first thing I wanted to get to the bottom of was your specific project. We have more solutions available than most people are aware of: pricing, specs, support, etc. The main thing is to make sure you're on the right solution, even if that might be the lowest-cost one available.

To dispel some rumors that seem to be floating around, we don't throttle or cut your site off in the event that you go over the allotments associated with whatever plan you get. Most of what I've found from some of our clients is that companies that offer "unlimited" actually monitor it to make sure you don't use "too much" and will attempt to upsell you on a plan that fits them better. Our main focus and commitment to our clients is transparency, which means we avoid surprises and never hold your server hostage.

Were there any specific details on the Nitro you wanted? Conversations like this eventually evolve to a more hospitable medium (email, phone, etc.), so if you want to talk things out, I can DM whatever contact info you need.

AWKM - I am curious what your personal experience with (mt) Media Temple has been in the past. It sounds like you didn't have a great one, and that's certainly something we'd like to get some feedback on.

Mainly, I just wanted to let you know I'm around if you need anything.

Great conversation, everyone! Thanks for letting me jump in, haha.

-Aaron

It's a niche, but more detailed than the usual sites. I'm trying to socially integrate it as much as possible later on.

I'll think about the cloud. It's how I want the infrastructure of the social network's core that worries me.

    • Amazon Prime Day slashes Samsung's newest Galaxy Watch Ultra by 45 percent by Karthik Mudaliar Samsung’s flagship Android smartwatch has received one of its steepest Prime Day cuts. Amazon has dropped the 2025 Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra in Titanium Blue to $357.24, saving buyers around $292 from its $649.99 list price. That's a 45 percent discount (purchase link below). The 47mm Galaxy Watch Ultra uses a titanium casing and a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 480 x 480 and peak brightness of 3,000 nits. It includes LTE connectivity, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi, NFC, and dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS for more accurate outdoor route tracking. The 2025 model has 64GB of storage, a 590mAh battery, sapphire crystal glass, 10ATM water resistance, IP68 protection, and MIL-STD-810H durability testing. Its health and fitness tools include heart rate monitoring, sleep coaching, Energy Score, Running Coach, body composition analysis, temperature sensing, and ECG support, where available. This model is best suited to Android users who regularly run, hike, cycle, or train outdoors and want cellular access without carrying a phone. The larger battery, rugged construction, bright display, and dedicated Quick Button also make it a stronger option than Samsung’s regular Galaxy Watch models for extended workouts and demanding environments. • Google begins rolling out its post-Epic Play Store billing model next week by Karthik Mudaliar Google has confirmed that its redesigned Play Store billing and fee structure will take effect on June 30, 2026, in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Economic Area. The changes will let eligible developers offer their own payment systems or send users to an external website for purchases, while separating Google’s platform service fee from the cost of using Google Play Billing. The rollout puts concrete dates and detailed rate cards behind the broader Android policy overhaul Google announced in March. That announcement followed a proposed settlement with Epic Games intended to resolve their long-running disputes over app distribution and payments, although the U.S. portion of the agreement still requires court approval. Under the new billing choice program, developers selling digital content or services can display an alternative payment option alongside Google Play Billing. They may also direct users to their own websites to complete a purchase. Developers can use Google’s standard payment-choice screen or design one that complies with the company’s user-interface rules. Choosing another payment processor does not eliminate Google’s cut altogether. The company will continue charging a service fee for transactions associated with apps distributed through Google Play, regardless of whether payment is handled by Google, an alternative provider, or a developer’s website. Google argues that this fee covers the value and infrastructure provided by Android and the Play Store. For developers earning up to $1 million annually, the service fee will generally be 10 percent. That rate also applies to auto-renewing subscriptions. When Google Play Billing is used in the U.S., U.K., or EEA, Google will add a separate 5 percent billing fee, and developers processing payments elsewhere will not pay that additional charge. This means Google’s familiar flat 30 percent commission is disappearing, but developers will not necessarily see a dramatic reduction on every transaction. An in-app purchase from an existing user processed through Google Play Billing can still reach a combined 30 percent. The biggest savings are likely to come from subscriptions, smaller developers covered by the $1 million tier, and companies able to move customers to their own payment infrastructure. Google is also offering lower rates through its Apps Experience and revamped Games Level Up programs. Apps and games that satisfy the company’s requirements can qualify for 15 percent service fees on new-install transactions and 20 percent on existing-install transactions. The criteria include performance and reliability standards, support for additional Android device categories, and selected platform features. Those program rates are scheduled to become available in the initial markets and Australia on September 30. For consumers, the immediate effect will depend on whether developers adopt alternative payments and pass any savings on through lower prices. For developers, however, June 30 begins a more flexible but considerably more complicated Play Store economy in which distribution, billing, install dates, revenue thresholds, and program participation can each affect Google’s final cut. Google is also separately developing a Registered App Stores program designed to simplify the installation of qualifying third-party stores. That initiative is expected to arrive with a major Android release later in 2026 and will launch outside the U.S. first. Google says the rest of the world will receive the changes by September 30, 2027, although billing rates for markets outside the US, UK, and EEA have not yet been announced.
