Hi all

I updated my Windows 8 Pro x64 and it appears this affected some patched files for custom Windows 8 themes I applied using UxStyle.

Could someone be so kind to provide me with these three unpatched files:

  • uxinit.dll
  • uxtheme.dll
  • themeui.dll

which can be found at C ? Windows ? System32

The issue I'm currently facing is a blinking black screen (screen goes off and on, but when it's on it is black) after the Windows 8 boot logo.

I hope replacing these files should work.. any other suggestions are welcome too of course ;)

Thanks a bunch!

I had this exact situation a week ago, where I ran to sfc /scannow because of some other errors I had at that time, and it also unintentionally replaced the UI .dll files with the original windows ones.

Still worth a shot, Carbon Fiber, maybe you could try it and tell us what you got.

Alright, I'm trying that first.

Too bad I have to first find a USB key so I can put Windows 8 on it and then run that command .. Or am I missing another option to get to the command prompt?

Thanks for the help so far!

Solved.

I played around with the BIOS settings so Windows 8 would fail to boot. Then, Windows gave me a troubleshoot screen where I was able to use the command prompt. Unfortunately, SFC wouldn't work as it was 'unavailable'. So I just restored the system to the latest restore point, and everthing seems to work fine.

Thanks all for your help!

Glad everything is good for you now.

Before another error makes your system unusable, burn a Rescue CD in advance :

The sfc command should be executed with the matching Windows directories/drives (this works for Windows 7, don't know how it does for Windows 8) :

sfc /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows /scannow
