Why does uploading something cause browsing the internet to be so slow?

I have a pretty decent download speed, and a upload speed 20x slower then it. So even if I am uploading at max, how can that affect my download speed.

Well, I have only ever noticed while browsing. I believe I can still download at high speeds while uploading, its just browsing. Why?

So if your upload pipe is FULL, how do you go and request a new page from the server, how do you even look up the site via dns if your upload is full.

Does not matter if you have 10GB down, if you use up your upload side -- you can never ask some server to send you that next page, or even look up the address of that web server, or email server, or ftp or whatever, etc.

No. Communication is two way, up and down, in and out.

Find a way to have one way communication regardless of the medium (telepathy, simple conversation, etc) and you will have ascended to a new plane of existence where things/people/anything knows what you want without telling, thinking, moving, or doing anything other that sitting still.

If using all of your avail bandwidth to upload or download you either will never be able to ask the question/make a request or be able to get an answer/get the file.

The one thing flawed is that many isps give you a very small upload pipe compared to your download ;) All fine and dandy they say you have 100GBps down, if your upload is only 100KBps ;)

Depending on your ratio its even possible that your upload limit might make almost impossible to actually reach your download speeds. With the way tcp works, you have to ack back during your download. So at some point your upload pipe will be maxed out, and you can not send acks any faster.. Even though it might be possible to download faster per your stated speeds.

This issue you have just recently discovered ;) Is why so many users ask why does p2p slow down my browsing! Because they never bother to correctly setup their clients to leave some room on their upload side for stuff like dns, or http requests to neowin saying you want to view this url, etc.

If you correctly setup your p2p to use only a % of your upload bandwidth, and not the whole thing - then its possible to continue browsing, emailing, ftping, etc. etc. without any issues - because its still possible for you to ask dns where www.something.tld is or send that request to neowin http server for the next page of the forum section your reading, etc. Or to send to google that you would like to search for whatyamacallits

If you want to fully use your upload pipe sending bits of something to the swarm members, or sending your latest cat video to youtube then you could setup some QoS on your router that says hey I know your queue is full of sending out p2p stuff, but I have this dns request I would like to send right now - please let it cut in line. In simple terms that is what QoS (quality of service) is -- the ability to cut in line, and create different lines (queues) for different protocols. Kind of like fast pass at the amusement park ;)

    • Formatting would be awesome if fully customised and then roll out the settings as a company wide standard.
    • I just want to know why the volume control feature in the browser version keeps appearing then disappearing, here today - gone tomorrow. Now it's gone again. Annoying as hell.

    • This article does not make sense and it’s very evident, the bug wasn’t confirmed to exist, because the application itself runs on editions of Windows which make it impossible to run Hyper-V VMs on, “Basically, Claude Desktop on Windows spins up a 1.8GB Hyper-V virtual machine if you use Claude Cowork or agent mode even once.”, suggests the bug is caused by something else otherwise it would only happen to users with the capability of running Hyper-V VMs and that’s only if Hyper-V was enabled which is by default not enabled. The true issue is that the author who reported the bug used the incorrect terminology, it’s actually a container, not a VM that is being started by the way. There were users on macOS reporting the same issue, Hyper-V, doesn’t exist on that platform obviously. Every single user who confirmed the problem in the last week was either using macOS making this issue impossible to be relevant to them, or was a comment talking about WSL, which the author indicated 3 months ago was disabled.
    • “To prevent hallucination issues and keep the database clean, the platform uses a multi-agent verification loop to check code quality.” - This absolutely isn’t happening. ”Before the massive rise of LLMs, which tanked its traffic by about 50% over the last couple of years, Stack Overflow was the go-to website for millions of programmers seeking coding solutions.” - It still is trusted, because the community of users, blocked other users from submitting false and misleading answers generated by AI agents that can be convinced something it generated is actually incorrect even if it’s actually correct. The company itself doesn’t know what it wants to be so it keeps trying and failing to introduce AI features to the platform. This effort will also fail, already submitted one successful poison pill, look forward to generating more.
