Xbox One is not backwards compatible with 360 games

Recommended Posts

The Xbox One won't play any existing Xbox 360 games, said Microsoft's Marc Whitten in an interview with The Verge.

The lack of backward compatibility results from the new console's hardware architecture, which is a significant departure from that of the Xbox 360. "The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn't really work from that perspective," said Whitten, corporate vice president of Xbox Live.

The Xbox 360 does support certain original Xbox games through software emulation ? more than 450 titles, almost half the console's library ? although backward compatibility can be spotty, depending on the game in question.

Sony's PlayStation 4 is in the same situation as the next Xbox ? it won't natively support PlayStation 3 games, because the upcoming system's AMD-made "Jaguar" x86 processor is too different from the PS3's Cell processor. Sony hopes to make back catalog games available on the PS4 through streaming and emulation.

Ya sure it will, let's see how your data cap holds up to that....streaming a 25gig game.

youre actually streaming a video of the game,so you wont have to stream 25gigs, but its still a video,so it wont even come close graphically to a native game, and theres input lag.

Some of the Xbox fans trash Sony for BC issues, but even your top Xbox Man has this to say

Don Mattrick: "If you're backwards compatible, you're really backwards"

Microsoft?s Mattrick says he doesn?t think compatibility is really a problem. He said only 5% of customers play older games on a new videogame system anyway, so spending time and money to develop technology to allow them to play older games isn?t worth it.

?If you?re backwards compatible, you?re really backwards,? he said.

Social media research firm Fizziology said its surveys of potential customers before the Xbox event showed 12% of them would be unhappy if there wasn?t backwards compatibility.

Sony said it is working to make its gaming system offer customers a way to play older games made for the PlayStation 3 (and earlier) by streaming all the information from servers. Microsoft indicated it isn?t planning to offer that type of service.

I haven't seen anyone trash Sony for BC on PS4. :/ It's a different processor, WTF did you expect?

Besides BC on PS4 will require an always on internet connection, which is apparently a bad thing.

I didn't expect any BC, nor am I trashing them for it. You can't emulate complex systems, I've been saying that about the CELL for months. The trashing I've seen is on the Neowin front page in regards to Sony and BC, I'll go dig it up...

    • Password Safe 3.72.0 by Razvan Serea Password Safe is a password database utility. Like many other such products, commercial and otherwise, it stores your passwords in an encrypted file, allowing you to remember only one password (the "safe combination"), instead of all the username/password combinations that you use. Once stored, your user names and passwords are just a few clicks away. Using Password Safe you can organize your passwords using your own customizable references—for example, by user ID, category, web site, or location. You can choose to store all your passwords in a single encrypted master password list (an encrypted password database), or use multiple databases to further organize your passwords (work and home, for example). And with its intuitive interface you will be up and running in minutes. PasswordSafe was originally designed by the renowned security technologist Bruce Schneier and released as a free utility application. Password Safe 3.72.0 changelog: Fixed bugs Improved font scale handling - should resolve font size issues on high resolution displays. • I've got a SoundBlasterX G6 that I use in my streaming setup. Sounds great to me and I've had zero issues with the ancient software package so far in Win11. That G6 has 7.1, Dolby, fully working SPDIF and since it's a USB device it's outside of my rig so I don't have to worry about EMF distortion. Looks like for now this is a pass for me as I think I have better hardware....
    • How do you connect 5.1 Speakers to this thing?
    • I agree with both of you... It's absolutely imperative that science is completely based on actual proven facts and hard evidence and is not considered dogmatic in any way. Science is not a religion and it will never be, and that's exactly how it's supposed to be.
