How to use ProXPN with OpenVPN on Android.

For the past few weeks I have been hearing the ?Security Now? podcast promote a VPN service called ProVPN.

ProXPN is a free, easy to use service that secures your internet connection against eavesdropping, masks your location, and allows you to access your favorite sites no matter where you live or travel to. You can use it with your iOS device as well as Android, to secure your traffic when connecting to Wifi access points. Below is a pricing chart.

They say you need the Premium for iOS and Android 4.0+ Support. What they are referring to is PPTP support. If you follow this guide you can use the basic service via OpenVPN with your free ProXPN account.

If you deside you want to buy ProXPN you can use the offer code SN20 (security now offer code) which gets you 20% off the life of your account. Comes to around $56 per year.

I signed up for the pro account because I didn?t want to have a bandwidth limit and I also wanted to use pptp on android. In the end I was having some issues where the VPN would disconnect when Android would switch from wifi to cellular data and vice versa

I knew that this service also supported OpenVPN so I wanted to go that route instead plus it's more secure than pptp. Only issue was I found VERY little information on the internet on how to get it to work. In the end I did get it to work, so I thought I would put all the information that I found in one place as well as my procedure. This guide will assume you already have a ProXPN account.

Step1: Download and install the Windows ProXPN Client.

Step 2: Copy the contents of the c:\program files(or Program files x86 depending on which version of windows you have)\proXPN\config to your phones internal memory or SD card. Make sure you put ProXPN.ovpn and the files located in the SSL folder all into the same folder on your phone / SD card.

Step 3: Download and install OpenVPN for Android from the Google play store

Step 4: Open ?OpenVPN? on your Android device and press the folder icon in the bottom right.

Locate the folder you saved the files to. Now tap on ?ProXPN.ovpn? and tap ?Select? in the bottom left and then the save icon in the bottom right.

Step 5: Now on the main screen you should see one labeled ?ProXPN?. Tap the settings button to the right of the name.

Step 6: Tap Basic. Now enter the IP address of the ProXPN OpenVPN server you wish to use. If you are using the free service i've been told the only server you can use is Dallas: 107.6.100.3 . For everyone else I have listed the server location and IP?s below.

Dallas: 107.6.100.3 (free accounts only work on this one)

Step 7: Change the server port number to 443 then scroll down to the bottom of the page and fill in your ProXPN username (Email address) and password.

That?s it. It should now be configured. To see if it works go back and tap on the ProXPN on the first page. It should now go through the motions of connecting. Look at the notification bar until it says connected. Now do a "What is my IP address search on Google while connect to your home wifi to see if you now have a different IP than the one provided by your ISP.

One last setting you may or may not want to change is under settings in the main application. You may want to check ?Reconnect on network change? otherwise if you switch from cellular to wifi you may be disconnected from the VPN.

    • Microsoft finally admits its default Windows 11 25H2, 24H2 action broke key legacy component by Sayan Sen Microsoft last week released Windows 11 KB5094126 and KB5093998 as the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Following that the company also published the accompanying dynamic updates under KB5094149, KB5095971, and KB5094156. So far the company has acknowledged two known issues that have popped up after the release which include bugged-out Office apps as well as the Recycle Bin; though there could be more at play too. Speaking of bugs and issues, Microsoft seems to have finally acknowledged a problem that probably has been around for close to a year. That's because back in July of 2025 the company made a default change to the latest Windows 11 versions, wherein it switched to JScript9Legacy on Windows 11 24H2 and later releases. Hence following the release of version 25H2 in October 2025, JScript9Legacy also remained default-enabled. As a result there has been a compatibility issue ever since then. For those wondering, by switching to JScript9Legacy Microsoft intended to improve the security of modern Windows PCs by reducing vulnerabilities tied to legacy scripting like cross-site scripting (XSS), among others. XSS exploits can allow cyber-attackers to attach malicious code onto legitimate websites and use them to execute the code when a potential victim loads such a website. Hence the new JScript9Legacy engine enforced stricter execution policies and improved object handling, which should help mitigate such attacks. Microsoft today has published a new support article detailing the problem. Neowin spotted it while browsing. The company says that JScript global definitions and execution context may fail to persist across scripts, potentially breaking older dependent apps and web-based components that relied on this legacy behavior. In the article Microsoft has confirmed that the issue stems from its move away from the older jscript9.dll engine in favor of jscript9legacy.dll. As mentioned above, while the newer engine was designed to address vulnerabilities and strengthen security it also changes how JScript handles execution context. As a result functions and definitions loaded by one script could no longer remain available to subsequent scripts once execution ended. The company notes that some applications worked correctly on earlier Windows versions because the older JScript engine automatically retained global definitions and execution state between scripts. Under the newer model though that behavior is disabled by default causing certain legacy workloads and polyfill-dependent scripts to fail. Microsoft says it addressed the problem via the KB5077241 update though the fix had not been enabled automatically in the following updates. As such admins must explicitly turn on persistent JScript execution context using a Registry setting that the tech giant shared today. The configuration can be applied to individual processes or system-wide through the FEATURE_ENABLE_PERSISTENCE registry key. The steps have been outlined below: Run the following command to create the feature control registry key: reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_ENABLE_PERSISTENCE" Under this key, create a new DWORD (32-bit) value. Configure the value as follows: To enable persistence for specific processes only: Set the value to 1 for each target process name. To enable persistence for all processes: Add * as the key name and set its value to 1. You can find the official support article here on Microsoft's website.
