Cost of Buying a New Console

Recommended Posts

The price of buying a new console is quite shocking. Even though you get over the hurdle of buying the console, everything adds up. It isn't the console that will empty your pocket, it is the games.

Playstation 4

Console:$399

3 Controllers: $59.00x3

4 Games: $59.00x4

Camera: $60.00

  • Total $872.00

Wii U

Console: $354

Controllers $32.00x3

Games $40.00x4

Total: $610.00

Xbox One

Console:$499

3 Controllers: $49.00x3

4 Games:$59.00x4

Total: $882.00

This is just an idea of how much a console with its acessories and games will cost you. This varies by the store and other factors as well. I got the prices above from Amazon just to get an idea.

+ the cost of a Xbox Live or PS Network account.

+ all the DLC for that $60 game.

It's kind of sad, really, but it reflects the fact that the majority of gamers are in their 20s and 30s and have more discretionary income than they know what to do with. As long as people keeping paying for it, the game companies will keep selling it.

As long as people keeping paying for it, the game companies will keep selling it.

As long as I want the content, why wouldn't I pay for it? Before DLC I bought expansions. Almost never finished any of them and they were pretty halfassed, where I did with the main game.

Expansions rarely made much money and were rarely as good as the main game. DLC might be a mixed bag but some of it is great stuff.

The costs would obviously add up if you're buying multiple controllers and games. It's not bad if you get 2 games with the console. For me, it'll come up to $519.97 ($399.99 + $59.99*2).

Also, the prices are a bit off. The correct prices are (in USD):

PS4:

Console: $399.99

3 controllers: $59.99*3 ($179.97)

4 games: $59.99*4 ($239.96)

Camera: $59.99

Total: $879.91 ($819.92 without camera)

XB1:

Console: $499.99

3 controllers: $59.99*3 ($179.97) [real price unknown]

4 games: $59.99*4 ($239.96)

Total: $919.92

WiiU:

Console: $299.99/$349.99

3 controllers: $49.99*3 ($149.97)

4 games: $59.99*4 ($239.96)

Total: $689.92/$739.92

Not a lot of people are going to buy 4 games and 3 controllers because the cost of that alone is ~$420. Most people are going to buy a game or two and maybe another controller if they want to play with someone in their house.

Happens every generation and I've been preparing for this for the past year or so setting aside about 20 bucks every paycheck (bi monthly) to put towards this so it's not such a massive drain when the time does come. While it's a huge upfront cost the amount of hours I get of enjoyment easily make it worthwhile. Also I don't plan on picking up that many controllers at launch (will likely never pick up 4 to be honest). Most friends will have the consoles as well, so if I really needed 4 they can always bring it with them but I'll be picking up at least a secondary controller at/near launch.

    • Yes, it was amusing at the time because even then dbrand was well known for stealing the designs of products from other companies. That’s what they do.
    • Didn’t Dbrand once complain that Casetify was ripping off their designs a well? seems pretty bad of them to try and get around Valve’s copyright this way with that in mind.
    • Dbrand thought they could get away with this Steam Machine case, Valve disagreed by David Uzondu Image via Dbrand Dbrand has cancelled its highly anticipated Companion Cube enclosure for the Valve Steam Machine, which it teased back in November of last year with a concept render and sign-up page, because it did not ask Valve for permission first before manufacturing the case. According to Dbrand, it took the "backwards approach" of building the product first before asking for permission from the copyright holder. Seven months of work went into the project, requiring over a thousand engineering hours from the design team. Workers developed forty-four sets of injection molding tools, making a unique mold for each sub-component of the crate. When the Companion Cube went live on Monday last week, it, according to Dbrand, quickly became the second-fastest-selling product in the company's fifteen-year history, racking up orders for hundreds of thousands of units. Customers eagerly bought the $129.95 deluxe edition or the bare-bones $99.95 version, which the manufacturer cheekily branded as the "Poverty Cube". It was around this time that the legal eagles at Valve descended on the accessory maker with a formal demand. The developer pointed out that the iconic block design remains protected intellectual property from the game Portal, so unlicensed sales had to stop. Dbrand said that all its pleas to salvage the project with the Valve team, including proposals to run a properly licensed release under official terms "with their blessing", fell on deaf ears, so it had no choice but to obey and remove every trace of the product from the internet. If you bought the enclosure, the company said that banks will process your refund by the end of this week, but if it still hasn't arrived in your account by then, you should not hesitate to contact support. The Steam Machine itself is a high-performance console that Valve designed directly to bring PC gaming into the living room. It was announced on 12th November 2025 (the same day Dbrand announced the Cube) and runs on the Linux-based SteamOS, the same OS that powers the Steam Deck. As for the price, due to the shortage of memory and storage chips, the hardware cost landed much higher than people were expecting, starting at $1,049 for the 512 model (without a controller) or $1,128 with the new gamepad. The premium 2 TB model pushes those prices even higher, selling at $1,349 for the standalone console and hitting $1,428 if you want the bundle.
