Sony Playstation is not innovating

Recommended Posts

No, those are not the same thing. You know this. Play while installing and play while downloading are not the same thing.

And really? You can stream your Xbone gameplay to tablets , phones, pcs and continue your gameplay from those devices?

Actually, this has been possible with XNA years ago, and that's dead. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible with Xbox One.

Edit: I should say that you can start a game on one of those devices and continue it on another.

People could argue back and forth on this all day. For me, I buy a games console to play games, and that is it, so they're innovating enough for what I want.

First. I ask to be civil meaning that it doesn't need to turn into "this policy" vs. "that policy" (and being called something) as almost all threads all over the internet have turned into. I am coming from the point of "bias"? How is that? Am I coming from my opinion? Yes. Please, stop (another reason I asked to stay civil). In my opinion (obviously...so I guess I'm biased to my opinion) is that both Xbox has the ability to play while downloading as well. I did forget the ability to play previous PS3 games (coming in the future, and potentially PS2/PS1 games) but I feel (as it's my opinion) that it's just a form of backwards compatibility, and that's not a big thing as it's just a new way of doing something that's been done before (again, my opinion).

I'm not flaimbaiting. I appreciate everyone's input as everyone has different opinions and different views.

EDIT: Note, I'm not saying that they aren't innovations (using Gaikai), I just didn't think it was. But I will concede it as being one.

Because your opinion is biased against the PS4. That was evident from you opening post in which you listed the various features from the other consoles, features by the way also available for PS4, and proceed to only listed the "Share" function under the PS4; and thus concluded that the PS4 was not innovative. That is just a bull****. The fact you then ask everyone keep it civil, after having posted what clearly was a flame bait is just comical IMO.

Personally I think the headline is misleading, this isn't an iPlayStation 4

Also as far as not being innovating, it's a games console, what are you really expecting from it?

(Myself I'd be happy if it only played games)

That's pretty much all I want it for, everything else I can get through my BRP and TiVo (that I want anyway)

If you really want all the features of a centralised media device, then simply buy the new XBox, what's the big deal?

(If I didn't know any better, I'd say this feels like comparing the cheapest pre pay phone on the market today to any touchscreen smartphone, you want features, get the smartphone, you just want to make/recieve calls get the other one)

Things you "forgot" to list for Sony.... Gaikai; the ability to stream and play games over the Internet from the ENTIRE Playstation catalog, TV capabilities, Multi-tasking, Switching back and forth between games, PS4 Streaming; uploading to Ustream or sharing your gameplay with friends and even letting one of them take control, PS4 Instant On; turning off your PS4 midgame and restarting at that exact same place, PlayGo; Being able to play video games that are in the progress of downloading, Streaming to PS Vita, etc. etc.

IF you are going to compare at least make it fair.

Gaikai is not innovative. Read up on OnLive.

Streaming installations are not new.

Which TV capabilities does PS4 have besides streaming videos?

Multitasking is hardly new

Video sharing has been done in current gen.

Pretty much only unique thing is the PlayGo and technology wise it's not ground breaking.

(No, I don't consider either console to be particularly innovative but that hypervisor on X1 looks sweet)

Do we really NEED any innovations?

All I care for is a new console with updated hardware that can run a game at full HD at 60fps. That's it really. Sub-720p gaming is just horrible. I game at 2560x1600 on my PC and like it that way! Preferably I'd wish for all games to be released on PC but that'll never happen.

enhanced tv experience, Kinect, potentially apps/games that run on xbox,pc,tablets, phone, offloading to cloud, smartglass, snap view, sharing all your games remotely to 10 family members/friends and playing from collection at the same time.

Enhanced TV Experience is not innovative, Google TV did it long before XB1.

Kinect is not innovative, consoles have had cameras and motion controllers since 2004

Apps that run on other systems aren't innovative iPad has had that for years

Cloud computing isn't innovative PC has had that for years

Smartglass isn't innovative, see iPad

Snap view isn't innovative, PCs have been able to run more than one app side by side since eternity

Sharing games isnt innovative, people can share discs

See what I did there?

In my country the Xbone TV integration would be useless. Also about innovation, just like how you'd want the latest hardware in your computer to handle all the games I expected the same from PS4. I was intending to buy a PS3 but delayed it since the PS4 was coming out. And I am glad I waited.

So for me as long as I am getting to play the latest games which should be the primary function of a gaming console, its enough for me.

Enhanced TV Experience is not innovative, Google TV did it long before XB1. LOL Google TV was a massive success right?

Kinect is not innovative, consoles have had cameras and motion controllers since 2004 Kinect has an insane amount of tech in it and goes way beyond "just a camera"

Apps that run on other systems aren't innovative iPad has had that for years I guess you've never heard of Windows?

Cloud computing isn't innovative PC has had that for years Outside of the RARE MMO, what other console has cloud computing?

Smartglass isn't innovative, see iPad Do you even know what Smartglass is? Do you also realize that there is a Smartglass app for all systems?

Snap view isn't innovative, PCs have been able to run more than one app side by side since eternity How many other consoles can do this?

Sharing games isnt innovative, people can share discs How many digital copy games can you currently share on other consoles, hell, even Steam?

See what I did there?

We saw what you did. You made up a bunch of crap is what you did.

How about this approach? There's been ridiculous number of threads on what the PS4 can't/won't do so how about what can it do?

Personally, I think Sony took the Apple approach and just released an "S" model. I'm not saying that is bad but calling the PS4 innovative is just a laugh.

It can play games. That's pretty much all I want it to do.

From this thread I've realised that either all of the companies are innovative with their consoles (Wii U, Xbox One, PS4) or none of them are. It just depends on the definition of "innovative."

EDIT: I've also just realised that I don't care if they are innovating or not with their next-gen consoles. If they offer something I want, I will buy it.

Made up a bunch of crap, being innovative means showing NEW IDEAS. Everything XB1 does has been done a hundred times before.

Whether Google TV is a success or not they did it first, in fact if you wanted to be pedantic about it Tivo was the first device that "enhanced" TV by turning your cable box into a DVR.

Kinect does have other tech in it but it is hardly an innovation, time of flight depth sensing cameras have been around since 2000.

Notice I said apps that run on other devices, how many Windows apps run on arm tablets?

OnLive launched in 2010, that is cloud computing, XB1 isn't innovating they are just using stuff that has come before.

Smartglass isn't innovative, iPad has had the ability to connect to AppleTV to use the TV to play games while using the tablet as a means to interface with it using airplay since 2011, Smartglass debuted on Xbox in 2012

Just because Snap View hasn't been on a console yet doesn't mean it is innovative.

You can share PS3 digital copies with 3 people including yourself, it used to be 5, and have been able to since PS3 launched.

Where did I say the PS4 was innovative, I said XB1 wasn't innovative, I guess you can't make the distinction between negative comments and "oh look he is comparing the two saying PS4 is better".

I am happy that the PS4 is just an "S" version of the PS3, I don't need Sony to tack on stuff to make the DRM worth having like Microsoft does.

See what I did there?

Except...

1) Microsoft's solution looks to be much better than anything Google or Apple have done.

2) The hardware and software working alongside the Kinect is innovative. Did you see the stuff that thing can do?

3) And who started the big push for Cloud computing and took it to another level with Azure? Lets see.. Microsoft. They've been innovating and building the Cloud from the start. No one can compete with their Cloud services.

Remember when Phones were just for phoning or texting people? There is no problem with adding more features as long as they well done, worth the extra cost and doesn't detract from the primary functions.

Exactly.

1) Have you used Google TV, it works exactly the same way. You get a TV Guide and you can switch programs from GoogleTV itself, it provides app overlays, etc.. by plugging your cable box into the HDMI input.

2) It's not innovative using cameras to manipulate games, PS2 did it with Eyetoy

3) Whether they improved it or not, it's not innovative if another company did it 3 years ago.

It's surprising to see some people just eat up any positive spin Microsoft put on their DRM policies. It will be because of these people that our future generations will get comfortable with all the restrictions. Maybe Sony will give in and PS5 will have similar draconian measures. I see a sad future.

Lol. You make it sound like it's the end of the world. It's just a freaking gaming console.

People don't care as long as they can sit on their fat ass and not have to get up to switch a disc if they want to change game, or can save money by sharing their collection with their friends family.

P.s. Google TV was not the first either. It was WebTV. Read up.

    • This makes me think of Dune for some reason.
    • I'm too old to return to the "good old days" when I was installing custom ROMs and tinkering with my devices - now I just want to turn it on and use it. I've read that banking and payment apps work on Murena /e/OS (I'll have to check the ones I use) and I also really want to support Fairphone 😉
