PS4?s DRM stance has set a

Recommended Posts

Sony?s pre-E3 conference confirmed to gamers that PS4 games will be DRM free unless a publisher chooses to impose safeguards on its titles, as well as no restrictions on game sharing or the use of pre-owned titles. Sony exec Scott Rohde believes that the company has set a precedent in this area for next-gen.

Speaking with Polygon, Rohde stated that he couldn?t see any third-party publisher forcing its own DRM measure on PS4 users after Sony?s unrestricted policy became public last week.

?All those publishers were sitting in [our] press conference last night,? he said. ?When Jack [Tretton], punch after punch after punch, and the house almost came down with all the cheers, they heard that. They heard it loud and clear and they saw the reaction to what our friends in green talked about. I think it?s pretty clear that we?ve set a nice precedent.?

Rohde reiterated his belief that publishers will steer clear of PS4 DRM, ?Quite frankly it would be pretty surprising to me to see a third party come up with some way to set a new set of DRM rules that were able to act on top of that.?

Interestingly, Rohde was one of a few executives targeted during a Twitter-wide ?PS4noDRM? hastag campaign last month. Check out the impact of the campaign here.

The PS4 stance is short term and na?ve. Digital download is where the future is, Disk DRM is so pass?. There is no reason this day and age gaming should be encumbered by what is printed on a disk and distributed by a 3rd party. Digital Downloads FTW and i'm willing to bet Microsoft will fix their few quirks long before Sony realizes disks aren't all that.

BTW, that PS4 is more and more hideous the more I see it..

Do you think digital downloads will not exist on the PS4? If so THAT is naive, they are there right now on the PS3.

You say lets go all digital! I say, why can't we have both?

This is my mentality as well. I enjoy using Steam and the PSN at the moment for downloading games that I want right away, but I'm also not against being able to go to Amazon and order a game so I have a physical copy. Again, I find that it's better to have a choice than be forced down one route.

Agree with this.

I've stated i'm on the fence regarding which one i'll pick up first. However Sony do seem a bit outdated with the new console, just sticking a bit more power on the old console is not what i'm looking for in a big purchase.

This is the only reason i'm leaning slightly toward XB1 at the mo is that it seems more future facing while still keeping a certain level of choice (such as disk based gaming).

I'm, of course, well aware that Sony offers digital download as well, i just think MS has thought about it more.

Exactly, we've been told for years music CDs and DVDs are going way, but market shrinking does not equal lets force everyone down one path. There's enough people populating the world today to give consumers choice. Not giving a choice for no real good reason will only hurt you.

Heck vinyls still exist, and in recent times have made quite a comeback (even if it's due to it being hip to collect them again).

The PS4 has all of the same benefits of digital distribution, so I don't understand why some people keep saying the PS4 isn't "future focused". True, it doesn't have the family-share thing that the Xbone has, but that is something that could easily be added to PSN in the future.

Other than that, both solutions seem pretty similar in terms of convenience, but I would go further and say that the PS4 is even more so due to the fact that it doesn't have the 24 hour brick-check.

Could, but you could only share your digital titles.  With X1 you share ALL your titles without need for discs and it doesn't matter who's on what console.

And you never need discs.  It's extremely arguable which way is more convenient.

Well the most convenient in my opinion is the method(s) that actually allow EVERYONE to play. You not needing to get off your ass to change a disc is not more important than gamers without internet/without reliable internet/people going on holiday/Uni&College students actually being able to enjoy gaming. What's better for the industry?

Was going to answer this but Randomevent done a better job.

I wonder how sharing and selling/trading digital games is gonna go without giving your account details to people. I also wonder if sony is going to allow you to sell or trade back those digital content back to them? or its just that once you paid for them you're stuck with it. I actually like the Microsoft approach because you can sell and trade back your digital content. I think Microsoft is actually the one who set the president (pun intended). right now, its clear sony is just trying to toot their own horn. or it's just that sony's rohde doesn't know the meaning of "precedence".

I also don't need to bring discs to my friends house if I want to play games with him.  Or keep a stack of 20/30 games on hand taking up space just in case I might want to play one of them sometime in the next five years.

Etc.

What's better for the industry?  The method they don't get reamed on used game sales.  What's better for consumers?  That's subjective.

MS have said you can trade licensing to ONE person with discs, but XBL purchased digital content? I have not read that anywhere.

I think most people interested in PS4 gaming care more about the fact they can trade/sell their physical copies as much as they want, not once. When there is a choice like that you don't really hear anyone caring about trading digital copies bought on PSN. How many people were asking to trade the PS3 PSN copy of a game this generation? They were all too busy trading/selling the physical copies.

Sure if your friend has fast internet to download the game at his and not have you waiting for hours. Not everyone does.

Plus as mentioned before in here, there are going to be digital copies on the PS4, just like how you can buy The Last of Us on PSN just now.

That depends.  They have said you will be able to play long before the download finishes, but I'm reserving judgement until I see it in action.

And yeah, but digital copies on MS servers don't need to have been bought digitally.

That depends.  They have said you will be able to play long before the download finishes, but I'm reserving judgement until I see it in action.

I don't see why that is hard to believe.  Games already do this (WOW, Guildwards, etc).

Most likely, The Last of Us could start playing on the PS3 at 50% downloaded, and the UI video for the PS4 shows you being able to choose to download SP or MP first when it came to buying a game off PSN.

Okay so what if your friends internet is down for a few days?

then why the hell would I want to go to his place to begin with  :D

It isn't hard to believe, I'm just waiting to see how well it works.

No, but you will have to download them, and if they're not on fast internet, that could take some time where if  you have the disc, you could be playing much sooner.

And 10-15 years out, the servers could be offline, and you lost all access where if you have a ps4, you can fire it up and play single player offline still.

Sony also has digital distribution, and game streaming so it gives you both of best worlds.

Could, but you could only share your digital titles.  With X1 you share ALL your titles without need for discs and it doesn't matter who's on what console.

Actually, you still have that benefit if you choose to buy all of your PS4 games through PSN. In which case you could, theoretically, share all of your games with someone else if Sony every decided to add a "share" functionality to PSN.

The point I was trying to make is that the digital distribution is there now, and could be expanded in the future through PSN updates. So I don't understand how the PS4 isn't "future focused" or whatever.

The benefit of buying a PS4 game on disc is that you own it. Then you have the option to lend it, sell it, or trade it in. That is an entirely different kind of convenience. One that, at least for the moment, the Xbone does not offer.

There's nothing stopping you from bringing the discs, you just don't have to anymore.

    • Forza Horizon 6 gets another hotfix for one of the game's online modes by Taras Buria Recently, Forza Horizon 6 players discovered an interesting glitch that allowed farming a crazy amount of in-game credits in a few minutes. Playground Games quickly pulled the plug on the exploit by disabling one of the game's online modes, and today, the studio is rolling out another hotfix. In my review, I complained about the game still showering gamers with cars, credits, and wheelspins. As such, earning money in Forza Horizon 6 is not a particularly difficult task. You simply have to play the game, crazy, I know. However, people still found an easier path to becoming a billionaire in Forza Horizon 6. All you had to do was purchase the Hummer EV, install a specific tune, shift in reverse while going at about 15 MPH, hit a wall, and get launched into the stratosphere at the speed of light. While mid-air, launch Eliminator and quickly get eliminated. Boom, the game just awarded you with a few million in-game credits. Initially, Playground Games disabled Eliminator to prevent people from farming credits. Now, following the release of the first balancing update, developers are rolling out a new update that re-enables Eliminator and gives users a free McLaren Sabre as a gesture of goodwill. Here is the changelog: One critical issue remains unpatched, though. There are quite a few reports of the game wiping gamers' saves, and developers are still looking into that. To avoid potential data loss, Playground Games recommends taking one of the steps outlined in a previously published support article.
