PS4 is quite the engineering marvel

Recommended Posts

The console is much smaller than its direct competitor and 50 percent more powerful. The power brick is incorporated in the console despite the slim factor. After Sony announced the ram type there was discussion how and if they would be able to fit 16 4Gb GDDR5 chips in the console, the product would be rather colossal. The Xbox One is a huge console, and weeks prior to E3 everyone was certain the PS4 with its better specs would be of a similar size, if not even bigger.

Even Yoshida was amazed by its smallness:

"We were heavily involved in designing the DualShock 4 even at the time that no idea existed, because it?s the interface," Yoshida said. "We were there as a team. But the box, it?s just a box. When I finally saw it, it was near-final and I was amazed by the thinness and lightness of it. It looked already like the second generation of a console. I compared it to the second generation of the PS3. On PS4, first-gen is almost exactly the same dimensions. More than the aesthetics of it, the smallness of it. I am so psyched."

This is not a size comparison thread but a question of ''how did they do it?!'' Why is the Xbox One bigger? This is how it looks inside:

I'm really stoked to see the internals of the PS4 and how it compares to the Xbox because I believe Sony engineers used magic arranging the innards of the console.

Is that a PSU with a HDD on top of it?

As far as I know, that's internals of Xbox One not PS4 in OP.

Edit: yup, as covered by wired: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/05/xbox-one-development-photos/#slideid-138497

Yeah I made a mistake, that is the Xbox One. No idea how Sony managed an internal power supply in a device that thin with the picture in the OP being the Xbox One. Interested to see inside for sure.

Do we know for sure that the PS4 will have an integrated PSU?

Everyone takes the first opportunity to bash the Xbox One without doing any independent research...

Praise the picture of the internals of the PS4... now, who's going to start the bashing now that you realized it's an Xbox?

Yeah it's confirmed

@yosp Does the PS4 have a PowerBrick or has it a internal transformator o_? just curious, since there is no on/off flip-switch on the back.

Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida ‏@yosp 3h

@ibun internal, no brick

@yosp is Sony.

Also shown here as the power connector is the standard two prong cable connector (like PS3)

The PS4 is smaller than the Xbox One. From looking at amazon, the Xbox One is in fact around the same size of a VCR but slightly smaller. The PS4 did get slimmer and the Xbox gained some weight.

I had seen that gaf thread earlier, it's kinda entertaining.

Excellent. That's good news. Hopefully they will have well thought-out cooling routes.

All that power in such a small area would be a pretty big concern.

What are the specs on the PS4 PS? USFF PCs have managed it with silence up to 240W I think, maybe more. Custom Server PSUs up to 500, see Digital Storm Bolt (my personal desktop).

The current PSUs in most Mini-ITX can power the current Intel Quad Cores plus any GPU not requiring external power, but most of them are not silent. The Dell OptiPlex are. Just a matter of how much profit they want to make off the hardware. I'll vote for internal any day.

They've said the PS+ sub for MP now is partly to help with the value in offering the PS4 at $399 so I'm guessing they're not netting not a lot. Potentially even a small loss with how bad the yen tracks the dollar.

yeah, but if they have (and i am sure they did) - it is amazing how much they squeezed into ps4. not showing the console originally does not matter, now we know the box is much more attractive then xbox one. (yes, in this case, size is a huge factor)

Ohhh no, Neowin told us it was a disaster in February that they didn't :rolleyes:

opinions are now facts. they're both boxes, but I prefer the cleaner Xbox one design.

still it should have been a standard stereo component width.

Was it changed to a 2-pin connector with the PS3 slim? Because my fat PS3 uses the 3-pin "kettle cord" connector; the same one that's used with PC power supplies..

Seeing as how the PS4 doesn't have HDMI in, and some of the chips that Xbox One has, which cause the machine to be so wide, and instead of using a full sized Blu-Ray drive, the PS4 uses a laptop drive which reduces height. So, I don't think it's as much an engineering marvel as it is just lacking in hardware. It's a great system, sure, but definitely not a technological marvel. I'm not praising the Xbox over the Playstation, but there are things the playstation is missing compared to the Xbox One.

    • O&O ShutUp10 3.1.1104 by Razvan Serea O&O ShutUp10 offers a simple yet effective way to take control of your Windows privacy. It provides access to almost 50 privacy-related tweaks, most of them hidden or not easily accessible to the average computer users. Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10/11 should respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be deactivated. Using ShutUp10 you can easily disable Windows Defender, turn off telemetry, disable peer-to-peer updates, turn off Wi-Fi Sense, disable automatic Windows updates, turn off and reset Cortana and more. ShutUp10 allows you to create a System Restore point before you apply any changes, so that you can revert your system at any time if you run into problems. O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed – it can be simply run directly and immediately on your PC. And it will not install or download retrospectively unwanted or unnecessary software, like so many other programs do these days! O&O ShutUp10 Free and Premium The latest version brings O&O ShutUp10 Premium, expanding the app’s long-standing privacy controls with automatic enforcement of user-defined settings. Instead of manually rechecking options after every Windows update, users can set their preferred privacy configuration once—or apply recommended settings in a single click—and the tool continuously monitors them in the background. If Windows 10 or 11 re-enables disabled features or introduces new data collection paths, Premium restores the chosen settings automatically without user intervention. The free version remains available and fully functional for manual adjustments, offering the same core privacy controls for Windows. However, the Premium tier is aimed at users who want long-term, hands-off protection, adding automatic reapplication after updates, ongoing monitoring, and optional notifications to ensure privacy settings remain consistent over time. • Fascinating...W h i t e P o w e r is now also asterisks out.
    • In the past few days I have noticed two odd moderation activities. First, when I posted the term 'White Nationist Christian' it was asterisk's out. When I changed it to **** it was allowed! Second, in the Politics is a ###business thread I was allowed to post that the GOP is a party of p e d ophiles but I was censored when I posted the GOP are a party of p e d ophile protectors. Wtf Neowin. Please explain.
