martijn
You can install Cygwin (www.cygwin.com), it provides a UNIX shell on Windows (among other things). pagal
Radix: cygwin would probably the best tool for you. It's not hard to setup, just download the setup.exe and run it (simple) and you'll have the next best thing to an actual *nix system (my opinion of course). NeoMayhem: aren't you contradicting with your quote by posting in this forum? seriously, this count++ strategy is not cool. He specifically said "Unix on an XP machine". Thanks for advertisement though. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/116619-unix-emulator-xp/#findComment-1378463 Share on other sites

neofeed
well I'm working most the time with linux. Currently I got windows running and *umg* it sucks... ( LAGs all over the place ) I have vmware running my linux and use Cygwin to start an Xserver to connect to my linux I've running in VMWare. ( Because I need my linux for office stuff, and windows only for Games ). Learning Linux is as describn here, done by cygwin, vmware or any other working pc emulator. OSX is nice but doesn't really help on learning linux. Easiest way Is probably to download a trial version of a pc emulator and Start Knoppix within. Or Gnoppix to have a more Gnome centric Knoppix. This will though give you an ability to learn GNU, ( yes, Linux is the kernel, GNU are the linux system tools ). kindest regards, neofeed Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/116619-unix-emulator-xp/#findComment-1384957 Share on other sites
Skyfrog
I started out just dual booting Linux and Windows, but later on I found an old AT&T computer with UNIX System V and a WYSE monochrome VGA monitor so I started using it to learn UNIX. :) I would imagine using Virtual PC and installing some version of Linux on it (but no window managers) would be a good way to start though.
