Griffin
Actually I have read the bible Three times over. On a side note variations of the bible abound all over. King James, The Living Bible, New World Translation. So I am not sure how reading the bible will help you learn about english. Each one translates words differently some have complete texts removed. But hey I think it is a valuable resource. Lot of good principles that can apply to our lives today. Aragorn
huh? Your teachers tell you if you want to learn english correctly - you should learn the bible?? Your teachers are just a bunch of thumpers! For one - pretty sure that the use of the bible in public school would, even if for some type of english classs would be walking a fine line on the separation of church and state issue.I know for sure if my kids brought home a bible as a text book - I would be bringing it to someones attention! If looking for examples of the proper use of english, etc.. - the bible sure and the hell would not be on my top 100. He said read, not learn. That's the whole point of the story! You should re-read it. Great ending. Way better than The Matrix series. BananaMan's Girl
I learned something awhile time ago. Never say never. Anyway, I'm in the process of finishing up the New Testimant in the New Living Translation on my palm. Much lighter to carry around, and fun to sit in bed with the palm glow whilst reading. aem4162
I used to have to read it when I had to go to vbs and church when I was a kid. I decided it was bull**** because it contradicted the science books I was reading. If ya wanna learn English, just start reading. Read anything that interests you. Get a dictionary to go with your books and look up stuff that you don't understand. unimatrixzer0
Do they mention dinosaurs in the Bible? Since in the Bible doesn't it say that Adam and Eve were the first life he created? So where do the Dinosaurs fit in this? There bones came from somewhere. Then I think theres another religion out there that says jeebus created the universe in 7 days or something, so how come scientists say its billions of years old? macf13nd
i only read the NT, its far easier. Also, it don't have the books that are full of bull$hit. Example: And he was Ham the son of Belshazza, who begat Abel, the brother of Werbel, who begat Sham and Blam, the sisters of Terwet, whose dog came to be known as Rover Silly old testament lol  Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/116792-have-you-read-the-bible/page/2/#findComment-1381268 Share on other sites

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Hardy...being taught that the Earth is only 7000 or so years old made me suspicious. Asking why fossils date back MILLIONS of years resulted in having the teacher tell me that god put the fossils there so that we could find them only confirmed my belief that the bible had a high bs factor. I also couldn't agree with them teaching us that humans aren't descended from apes when there is evidence to contradict that. You take the bible as gospel (pun intended) but for all we know it was written by a bunch of guys sitting around a table drinking beer and making stuff up as they went along. If you're blind enough to believe the bible, FINE...I'm not. threetonesun
The point of reading the Bible is that probably 50% of modern English literature references it in someway or another. People learn how to read plot and character through their cultural backgrounds. For most Western readers, that background comes from a)the Bible, and b) fairy tales. So, if you had no understanding of either of those two things, reading most books would have very little significance to you. There's a whole line of literary studies which focuses entirely on biblical references and Jesus imagery in literature. xWeston
The bible was first writen in various languages, Aramaic, Hebrew. Then compiled in Greek, then translated into Latin, from which most modern language translations come from....Im not a bible scholar, so I might be wrong in the exact order, but what is for sure is that its a translation of a translation of a translation....... What I suspect here is that english teaching is being done mostly by American missionaries over there, with the agenda of then inserting the Bible... neopwi This is actually somewhat incorrect. It was once translated into Latin, but the only recent translation that I know of that was done from the latin are the King James/New King James version. NIV, etc, are taken from the greek/hebrew. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/116792-have-you-read-the-bible/page/2/#findComment-1381301 Share on other sites

Beastage
Everyone should the read the bible its more than religious book , its also a very solid and descriptive history lesson Dont forget that the bible (ignoring some of the more religious tales) covers about 3000 years of Human history I'm not religious (am Jewish) but I read it and I liked reading it and there are very mysterious tales in it : The Nephilim , The entire book of Exodus - dont forget the ten commandments , the western moral and justice system is based on them , The rise and fall of the Ashurian Epmire , the Babylonian Empire and the Persian Empire all to way to the Greek Empire. Very good book for non religious people I think Edited November 18, 2003 by Beast_4thHM Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/116792-have-you-read-the-bible/page/2/#findComment-1381423 Share on other sites
