Sometimes the updates leave those folders there, though they should be removed upon reboot. How odd. Try this (unless you already did):

Reboot into Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt, then try to delete them. With explorer disabled and you in safe mode, it should let you delete them.

That is very odd though, at most all I've ever had was 2... and it let me delete them upon reboot... Well, I'll help you get rid of 'em man, one way or another.

yeah just sux cuz this app rules, expect for this.  ill report back... hopefully i can get rid of them.. this is the second biggest drive i got and i cannot afford to have to reformat the entire thing...

Well I feel ya man. You're the only person to report this happening, so I'll do my best to help you get them gone. You shouldn't have to reformat. I'm almost positive that you'd be able to delete them in Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt. Also, I'll try and see if I can find any reason that this would have happened... I'll let you know if I find anything, and you keep me posted on the removal.

 holy crap.  indeed i am.  good call.  what i do now?  disable it and delete them then enable it again?

Hmmm... yes, I think that may work... according to Microsoft:

SYMPTOMS

When you install certain Windows 2000 Server or Windows XP hotfixes on a computer with a high-speed hyper-threaded processor or multiple high-speed processors, a temporary folder may remain in the root folder of one of the computer's hard disks after the hotfix is installed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs as a result of a race condition (timing issue) in certain versions of the hotfix installer components. The affected hotfix packages contain installer components that have the following attributes (or earlier) that are listed in the following table:

Date         Time   Version    Size    File name
---------------------------------------------------
21-Sep-2002  20:44  5.2.32.0   24,576  Xpsp1hfm.exe
21-Sep-2002  20:44  5.2.42.0   46,080  Spuninst.exe
21-Sep-2002  20:44  5.2.42.0  273,408   Update.exe

RESOLUTION

This problem is resolved in hotfix packages that contain hotfix installer components with the following attributes or later that are listed in the following table:

Date         Time   Version    Size    File name
---------------------------------------------------
14-Nov-2002  18:01  5.3.10.0  409,088  Update.exe
17-Dec-2002  21:32  5.3.10.0   87,040  Spuninst.exe
17-Dec-2002  21:32  5.3.5.0    24,576  Xpsp1hfm.exe

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem delete the temporary folder after you install the hotfix, and then restart the computer.

So I'd say give it a shot... if it doesn't work, just try what I suggested earlier. But also, now I know to include a warning for those with Hyperthreading enabled.

that doesnt tell me how to delete them....  oh, you mean give disabling ht a shot?

Yeah, sorry... that's what I meant. Try disabling HT, then try it. I think it will work, but if not, try the "Safe Mode w/ Command Prompt" idea. I'm sure one of those two ways will work. And now we also know that you must disable HT before running the AutoPatcher (or even just manually patching your system with an older hotfix).

Hmmm... I guess try the other way and let me know...
what other way? i disabled ht and tried to delete in windows and in safe mode with cmd.

i dont know what else to do. the folders are empty. it will not delete the update dir in each of them. says i dont have access. this sucks.

Oops... sorry, thought you only tried the HT way. Hmmm... both ways don't work?? Okay, give me a little more time to look into this, there hasta be a way.

rmdir foldername I think is the command you want.

Removes (deletes) a directory.

RMDIR [/s] [/Q] [drive:]path

RD [/s] [/Q] [drive:]path

/S Removes all directories and files in the specified directory

in addition to the directory itself. Used to remove a directory

tree.

/Q Quiet mode, do not ask if ok to remove a directory tree with /S

do that from saemode with command prompt, the del command only work with files, not directorys.

another thing to try is to (disable simple file sharing if you have it enabled first) highlight all those folders you can't delete, then right click, properties. go to security tab and make sure you have ownership of those folders. maybe you dont? that would stop you from deleting the folders. if you don't, force ownership and get rid of those bad boys

    • One of the reasons Windows is in use is because of compatibility with hardware and software, but it isn't perfect and there are gaps. This software can help maintain compatibility with older hardware and software the way DOSBox helps us now.
    • This can help with compatibility the way DOSBox helps us now. There are a lot of old drivers, software, and hardware that don't work in current Windows. This could also help older hardware still be relevant because you can install it directly on devices where current Windows versions are no longer supported.
    • Nexus Mods owner steps down citing toll on personal wellbeing by Usama Jawad If you've ever been involved in the gaming landscape, there is a good chance that you have heard of Nexus Mods. It's one of the largest websites offering game modifications online with millions of registered members. The site hosts mods for numerous popular titles including The Witcher 3, The Elder Scrolls, Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and Fallout, among others. Now, the creator of the site has announced that ownership of Nexus Mods is changing hands, 24 years after its inception. In a blog post, the site's creator, Robin Scott - also known as "Dark0ne" in the community -, has announced that he is stepping down from managing the site on a daily basis and is actually handing over Nexus Mods to a new owner. Interestingly, this owner has not been named yet, but it seems like the community will be seeing a lot more of Foledinho (Victor) and Rapsak (Marinus) in daily operations. Scott says that ever since starting the site back in 2001, his adult life has been pretty much consumed by running Nexus Mods and managing its "major social network". This has almost been an on-call position, which has taken a toll on his personal wellbeing and health due to the accompanying stress and anxiety. As such, Scott has decided to step down from his executive role to avoid further burnout. Although Scott has not revealed the identity of the new owners, he says that his exit is purely for personal reasons and not some corporate backdoor deal. The site's creator will still be around in the forums and Mod Author Discord, providing direction when needed without taking responsibility. Scott's announcement has been mostly met with praise and thanks from the community. Though, as may be expected from a rather diverse and often polarized audience, the discussion did recently veer off-course and has now been locked from further engagement by community mods.
