BeOS - Yeah yeah, its pseudo-unix.

So.. I got an 850MHz box sitting on my desk with nothing to do. So I installed BeOS Developer Edition. Its nice. Even got it networked (though BeAIM seems dead). I was wondering if anyone else out there has had the odd sensation to do this and what they got working.

My plan was a web-controlled mp3 player (using CL_AMP) as a sort of Home Entertainment PC (TV Tuner Card, DVD, etc). Any advice would be appreciated (other than "Install Windows" or other such drivel. The point is to USE BeOS to do .... "stuff")

I tried to install BeOS on an old P2, it installed properly, but the desktop never loaded up. Probably because the video card sucked. I may try it on an P3 that I have at home.

I had BeOS 5 Pro running prefectly on a PII system. I still had an old-school Trident TGUI960 2D card for video which it ran fine and faster than ANYTHING ever did on that machine. It's since been sold, it was one of the best OSes that I ever ran on. If it ran on current day hardware and had 3rd party support, I'd be running it today.

The community is there, stronger than the Amiga crowd IMO, and it's still moving, which is nice. It'll be interesting to see if Yellowtab helps out all the much with Zeta or not.

For help, look towards BeBits. It's probably the largest cropping of BeOS users that I know of. I think your idea would be cool to get working and it should be reliable as anything else out there and quite efficient.

www.bebits.com Look for BeOS Max or for ease, BeOS Dev 1.1. To use it on a P4 or Athlon/XP class system, you HAVE to use these versions. BeOS PE (Personal Edition/Professional) without the proper kernels will KILL your machine.

Thanks splatnix, I knew about Bebits already. I ran BeOS Pro back when it was new and STILL want a true ppc BeBox! I got BeShare working and there seems to be a good crowd. The only problem I have now is that I'm tempted to get Zeta Developer Edition (I need a new t-shirt and dvd player anyway) but I'd rather wait till its final. The current purchasable release is RC1. :/

BeBoxen are definately hard to come buy, and VERY expensive if you manage to find one for sale! A rare Dual 200MHz Bebox on eBay recently went for $2080.55!

Congrats on getting BeShare working :D I don't think I could have any suggestions for your HE machine other than just make sure you've got supported hardware (either by default, with the DevEd, or from dirty hacks) from here on out and you should be golden. Zeta is a definate thing to look at in the future, but waiting is probably a good idea. No reason to drop the cash on RC editions.

I've tried BeOS on my P3 a while back and i was very impressed with it. It was a really nice OS. The only thing that sucked was that the support for software and drivers blows even more than linux. It could have really been something if that OEM deal ever went through.
