Sony yet to show a functioning PS4 or a hands-on Remote Play demo

Highly doubt the above image is real because the PS4 development is for a linux host and therefore would need to be completely ported over to run on windows plus would need drivers writing for windows, and doing the first is just plain stupid and the latter before the hardware is final is stupid.

All things being equal, then wouldn't they have released their new console last year? Being that the 360 came out a year before the PS3.

Forward thinking and speed are 2 different things.  Some innovations can be done quickly... Some innovations can take time...

seriously.... firstly it doesn't actually run linux as such. secondly, most developers run on windows. that's what they use when they develop and that's what they use when they test the game before they test on the final hardware or dev kit.

Last I heard, PS4 dev tools are based on Visual studio.

From digitalfoundry's review of E3

However, these early slices of gameplay are telling of where Microsoft stands in its preparations for that eventual launch day. The biggest shock remains in how few of these games are actually running directly from console hardware right now, with almost every third-party developer openly admitting to a reliance on PC-based debug machines.

We leave Sony's E3 booth undoubtedly impressed, with two key takeaways in light of the Xbox One's rivalling offerings. Firstly, though almost all launch titles on show appear to be running directly from PS4 hardware, it's a touch disappointing to discover the likes of Thief and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag are only currently being demonstrated by proxy of an on-hand developer. This was a very closely guarded event indeed, suggesting a lack of confidence in the progress of development for some of these titles. Even so, Knack, DriveClub and Warframe do give us absolute, no-holds barred freedom to toy with the most current builds as long as we please.

Why is this even a debate?

Both consoles have been demoing games running on actual hardware AND on PCs.

For some reason when its solely the X1, its terrible news, when in reality its happening on both and its not bad at all, just part of the process.

You guys like to many mountains out of mole hills.

So you can use PS4 with

- No cables connected on the backside

- Can completely block vents on the back

Nice!

Looks like they have it covered with some sort of angled thing.  I wouldn't be surprised if there was a fan below pulling heat out and covering the cords.

People are hilarious... Both MS and Sony do it.. And have done it this way for ages...

And like Trooper said, it's not that big a deal...

But the blind followers swear MS is fakin it, while Sonynis the real deal... Lol...

Get over yourselves already...

People so badly want this to be a spec war... Got some bad news for y'all... It's not going to be

Next Gen is goin to be a "Features" war.. Yep I said it...

No, there is hidden PCs underneath!

If it uses half the power of a PS3, why wouldn't it be small?

With so many people questioning what I meant around ?near final? at Gamescom, I want to clarify my own comments (typically I wouldn?t chime in on a Sony thread, since I can?t speak to what Sony is doing), but since I can?t start a new thread, I?m adding my comments here. So before this starts ? I?m not here to bash Sony.

At E3, you saw Xbox One games running in a couple of environments:

Development PC?s (these were our early Alpha kits spec?d similarly to HW targets)

Development Kits (these are the white and black consoles that look like retail units)

Other PC?s (in these cases, like the drama around the PC with the nvidia GPU), we asked developers to make sure what they were showing was reflective of what could be achieved on Xbox One.

I think we were pretty open about it. Some may disagree, but I don?t recall us trying to be particularly cagey about this since it?s typical for this point in the console to have game development being scattered.

At this point, just about everything is running on ?near final? Hardware. What?s unique about our program this time is that Dev Kits and Retail Kits are exactly the same.

Despite the belief, our Dev Kits DO NOT have 12gb of ram. They have 8gb, just like shipping units. So anything you see running on a black Xbox One console is the same unit we?re going to ship.

Now, the reason I say ?near final? is because you guys like us to be precise. Anyone that knows HW development understands that millions of units don?t come flying off the assembly line by just flipping a switch (see what I did there?)

You have many, many units that are run on the factory production line before final product starts as you?re testing quality, tweaking the manufacturing process, etc. But all these consoles you?re seeing are coming off factory production lines. That?s why I caveat ?near final? because, before you start full production, you go through many test runs.

So again to clarify ? we have real, retail consoles running real code. Every time you see a black box running software, it?s the real thing. I had almost 300 people see the dash demo at Gamescom, and people were free to inspect the HW I was demoing on.

I'd love to know if the pictures Audioboxer posted were actually real PS4's playing the games, since I see no cables outa the back and its essentially in a big greenhouse.

Heh, I was at gamescom. It was real PS4 front of me. It seem ain't pc to me even non-windows OS appear when DS4 crash.
The white thing next to it is the venting.

Ah, tah for that. Didn't see that white cube thing! I'm presuming the cables also lie down there.

Yeah that's what i was thinking. Hiding cables is the norm for showcasing units because most people find cabling ugly.

The uproar over the Xbox games being demoed at E3 wasn't about the fact the games were played on PC's, it was because they were on over-powered PC's with $1000+ titan cards in them.

Devkits are PC's but the specs are similar, slightly above the console specs to compensate for logger and emulation software, the PC's at E3 Xbox One games were showcased on were well above the Xbox Ones specs.

This was the reason for the outcry.

Now onto topic, they have set a solid release date, they have used real retail versions of the PS4 to showcase games at Gamescon and the vita remote play was shown hands-on demonstration on stage.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • Sure is a shame that Google spent all of its efforts on maximizing milking ###### ad revenue instead of actually improving their once ubiquitous and best-in-class search engine with, say, a useful AI that could actually improve search results... /S
    • The blatant anti-competitive nature of the EU's DMA rules are obscenely IRONIC and wholly damaging to upwards innovations from within the EU. Why?! Because it penalizes marketplace competitors whom the users CHOOSE to sign contracts with (basically dictating the product management models and strategies whilst handicapping popular marketplace choices) all under the guise of 'fair competition' and assuring continued operations. The only beneficiary (as the DMA is written and applied) are the toxic wannabes with whom most consumers have chosen to NOT do business with! What kind of bass-ackwards nonsense is that?! Not everyone in the marketplace that's lower-ranked deserves some sort of advantage whilst being otherwise garbage and toxic. Ugh, so dumb.
    • Assetto Corsa Competizione, House Flipper 2, and more join Xbox Free Play Days by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe There is a brand-new Free Play Days offer available to Xbox players, giving them a chance to try out a new selection of games over the weekend. Microsoft's latest promotion brings in three games for Xbox players to try out, and they are House Flipper 2, Blades of Fire, and Assetto Corsa Competizione. Unlike in recent weeks, no games from this selection are being offered without a Game Pass subscription this time. This means only Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members can jump into the three titles, even if they are single-player. From the trio, House Flipper 2 is for simulation fans. The title lets you buy run-down properties, renovate them, and sell them for a profit. A sandbox mode even lets you build houses from scratch too. Next, Blades of Fire lands as a fantasy adventure that combines metroidvania exploration with punishing combat. One unique aspect is that instead of finding loot, you'll be physically forging your own weapons. Lastly, we go back to simulators with Assetto Corsa Competizione, with the hit racing title offering a hardcore, highly competitive racing game focused entirely on GT3 and GT4 class cars. Everything from the tracks and tire physics to the dynamic weather conditions are focused on giving players an authentic driving experience. Here are the announced games and the platforms they are available to play on: House Flipper 2 (Xbox Series X|S) Blades of Fire (Xbox Series X|S) Assetto Corsa Competizione (Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One) To easily find the titles on Xbox consoles, first head to the Store, and then in the sidebar, find the Home section. In there, open the Subscriptions tab. All the games from the Free Play Days collection will show up in this section for quick access. This week's Free Play Days promotions will end on Sunday, June 28, at 11:59 pm PT.
