It's part of the experiment; this is a series release with more and more coming the more it is supported.

I am way more disappointed that they added Fulgore to season 1 instead of using him as a selling point for season 2.  They could have tossed a new character (two for each season) or Cinder/Riptor in there.

I still think its lame you only get 1 character... Jago vs. Jago... FIGHT ON!!!

That's just the demo.  If you want the full roster, buy the full game.

its one way they make money off you

That is part of the full $20 package (or $40 if you want the special edition)

They will not be charging anything extra for these things as they add them.  Only the season 2 roster would cost extra.

WTF, it must be the first fighting game to not ship with a single player arcade story :/  This is pretty sad that after all these years we get a rushed unfinished game like that :(

I agree I would have preferred to see it done when it launches, but since they are including it in the initial price for the game, at least they aren't doing it to try and sell it as dlc.

The good thing is that its clear the dev team is working day and night to focus on the core mechanics.  The gameplay videos show that their efforts are paying off to create a competitive fighting game.  Its nice to see them so eager to get that right.

The tutorial mode that has been laid out is also quite nice.  There are videos of that up and its really extensive.  Its easily up there with say Skullgirls for having the best tutorial for a fighting game.

They constantly rotate the character you can play as in the free version. It's like a demo, a way to test drive all of the characters in the game. You don't really get to keep any characters in the free version.

The first character you can play as for free is Jago, but you will eventually get a different character instead.

If you want the full roster of 8 characters/stages it is only $20. There will be another season of the game next year with 8 more characters/stages.

I really like this business model for fighting games because I would never pay $60 for a fighting game, but $20/all or $5/character seems much more reasonable.

I agree with you, no way a fighting game should be $60, let's face it, they're not much and any "story" they tend to have is weak at best.   $20 for the whole game and, if you want season 2, another $20 is fine for me since those whole really like the game will pay for it when the time comes.

They actually stated this months ago...it's just that some media outlets didn't know. I've been keeping up with KI since they announced it and the devs are working really hard (I met up with Filthierich, community manager when they brought it to play at TFC in Raleigh, NC) on it as they had limited time. When Fulgore comes, so will the arcade mode. The game is basically $20 bucks without the added bonuses. It's not like it's a "full" $60 game. I like their way they are selling the game anyways. For those of you who don't know all of the information, you can go to the double helix forums, or look at past streams of the game on twitch.tv/microsoftstudios where they showed off the game weekly. The community and I got a lot of questions answered (that were shown in the media later on) during that time. Like the "beta testing" ability for Xbox One and all that stuff, I asked the question for that to even be an article on other sites (I think IGN). This game is fun. Can't wait. 11 DAYS!

I'm so tired of seeing "after release" or "will be fixed with an update"..  that goes for both consoles.

I agree, Devs are becoming lazy, and initial releases are nothing more than open beta tests.  Kids now a days expect patches and expect the game to be half broken.. it's v1 after all.   However, when I was a kid.. the console/games remains 100% the same until the next revision of the console OR the game was re-released as a collectors edition.. there were no day 1 patches, or it will come in a few months.

Agreed

F2p concept..  but i agree, more than 1 would be nice.

But its not f2p. Only the media seem intent on calling it that. The devs make it clear that its just a demo that you can then buy the whole game or just buy the characters you want. F2p wouldn't work like that.

Devs and gamers are very much spoiled now thanks to the internet and the fact that all of our gaming devices are connected and can be altered in real time whenever they want.

Unfortunately, that results in some lazy choices. It also affects pc games, in fact it probably was a problem for pc gaming long before consoles got in on the fun.

okay, its p2p..  same concept. some people do it better than others.  Is it really a demo? they didn't really sell it as a demo - they sold it (or at least spoke of it) as something akin to p2p / f2p markets where you buy the characters you want to play.

Um, no they did not sell it as akin to f2p or p2p. Again, the media stories always paint it that way for some reason.

Double Helix themselves have been pushing it as a demo, even saying it was a generous demo since it would include the entire game with the only limitation being the use of a single character.

  1. too concerned with formal rules and details: too concerned with what are thought to be correct rules and details, e.g. in language

A game like that by any other dev would be "free2play" or "pay2play" and there are many variations of it.

Me, i'll enjoy the single player style to see if i want to buy more/unlock the rest or whatever the developer wants to call it.

what the heck is the deal?

I swear, people are obsessed with labeling this game as F2P. You even go a far as to attack with a dictionary response. Talk about ridiculous.

I get why some want it labeled like that: F2P has a negative connotation among many gamers.

Get over it. They are offering a demo and you can buy the full game like any other game.

hahaha, i'm not obsessed with anything, you are.. That's whats hilarious.

Bravo to the devs for releasing an entire game with 1 free character that is free to play without calling it free to play.  You win, feel better?

(btw, i'm gonna play the crap out of it like i said earlier regardless of what you, the devs or i call it)

I also find this unacceptable, but what are you gonna do? Wait for KI v1.1. That's all you can do. It's a disturbing trend.

Sure, I'm the obsessed one. Yep, that's about how I expect it to be spun. I simply try to correct something that was falsely pushed in stories and I'm accused of being obsessed.

Its a free demo, sorry to break it to you. If you prefer to label all free demos as free to play, that's cool. This all began with a question what the devs were selling it as. I told you and then you went after me.

Now can we get back to looking forward to the game?

They had one year to work on it. They decided that they'd work on characters and make the actually game great before they work on the story. I think they did the right thing.

Here are some details about how the arcade port of KI that comes with the Ultra Edition:

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/11/12/killer-instinct-classic-two-versions-arcade-game-wont-sold-separately/

They decided to include two versions of the original rom, one with classic glitches in place and then a later revision that fixed most of those. They also added a couple of extras like a training mode.

Yeah, I think they went this way because MS was not sure just how much interest there still is for the franchise.

I'm sure there's still lot of interest. No it wont sell like Halo or Gears but i'm sure it will sell enough. It's one of the few games (with Forza) i'll miss if i decide to buy a PS4 instead of a One. Still not sure about Double Helix though but from the gameplay video i've seen looks like DH nailed it.

I don't mind the buy for the toons you want. In fact if the total amount you need to pay to unlock the full game is around 60-70$ it's a great way to do things. I like the free to play, pay for the features you want model of games like Path of Exile and Planetside.

The price breakdown works like this:

$20 gets you the full games

-Season 1 roster of 8

-All the game modes, including the Arcade/Story mode that will come out with the last character of season 1

$40 is the special edition that comes with the arcade port and other extras

$60 is a physical special edition

Season 2 will obviously cost something down the road though.

It makes more sense to sell fighting games like this, IMO.  If the game does well and this model works I wouldn't be surprised if you see others try and follow suit.   Anyways, I believe KI is only the start of things to come as far as new and old IP making it's way to the XB1.

    • Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.
    • This is why competition must exist. Finally, pressure is mounting on Microsoft to move in the right direction.
    • Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
