Microsoft does hit my last nerve from time to time with some of their boneheaded decisions.  But Microsoft has been a breath of fresh air in the gaming console world.  A lot of things are considered industry standards now because of Xbox/Live.

Thanks for posting these shots.  I LOVE IT...

I think that video is a great advertisement for the platform.  It's something that I think almost everyone would appreciate hearing and seeing as it does a good job laying out what MS' goals are for the system and what those goals mean to the consumer.  They lay out what this all means for gamers and how its built around offering those experiences while at the same time, expanding into other areas and trying to anticipate what the future will bring.

I still think the X1 is shaping up to be a great system as is the PS4.  I really believe that if the early drm situation had not happened, we would not have near as much backlash against the X1 right now.  Although, I also think MS has managed to calm a lot of that backlash and even turn people around, but there are still those that are forever turned away from the X1 that might not have been.

Over XBOX system, why are we paying money for a console to get ADs, when i turn on my xbox i dont want to see ads, i want to see the last game i played, games i have on my system!

Why when we pay for a bus ticket do we have to look at ads plastered over the bus?

Why when we buy a tv we have to watch ads on pratically every channel?

Cause it called FREE TO AIR! is your xbox console free, if it was then yes i would understand and stop complaining, but paying 749NZD for a console and then cost to play online only to have ads put in my face isnt right! Sure have your video tab there with all your movies release's but dont put them these ads on the first screen i see!

yea i dont know where your going with this one??

Then explain cable? If I recall from my younger years, cable didn't have ads because you paid for it...guess what happened? TA DAAAAAAA

Ad = commercials. Cable always had commercials in my neck of the woods. I remember cable back in the early 1980s with ads aka commercials.

That was the exact opposite here in the UK, you paid for cable and the channels had more adverts, for longer than all the free to air channels did here at the time.

Either way I agree with you, the amount of adverts on the current 360 dashboard is a joke. I personally don't want to see them on the Xbox One, however I don't expect that will ever happen.

I honestly don't care about the ads-on-a-console argument, but reasonably sure there were always commercials on cable (at least in the US), and I've had cable in one form or another since somewhere around the mid 80's.

i think your missing my main point, when i turn on my xbox360 i dont want to see ads on the first screen i come to! i want a nice clean screen showing my installed games, last game i played and maybe future games. i dont care about movies and music, or apps on my xbox, i have a other devices for that. Look at this screen show of the first screen this comes to,

I see ads for movies tvshows something called upload studio, i thought i was using a game console! Biggest picture should be the game i last played, there should be games i have installed and maybe games in the market place and upcoming games,

Upload studio is an Xbox One feature...for Game DVR stuff. The "ads" are the "What's New On Xbox One"

Then I recall incorrectly...but my point is still that, paid services can still have ads.

Yes this is true, but there needs to be a balance, i bought a game console, not a media console. I am still looking at the xboxone and think there are some great things about it but the PS4 for now is what im getting.

Sorry to say but Xbox One is basically a media console. Also, we have to wait to see how it can be used as I recall during the Xbox One reveal, everyone's homescreen looks different because each one is customized.

cloud - welcome to the "internet"

kinect - webcam and microphone (listening all the time...can even pick you out of a crowd. sup NSA)

record - sup fraps

nice UI - basically windows 8...but without the rest of the Win8 advantages

built the platform like a PC - except without the upgradeability.

Ok first of all, you must have missed the prior announcements and videos of the dash because that first screen is all about showing what you have been using on the console.  That huge square would be showing the last thing you did on the console, be it a game, a movie, and app, etc.  The other squares around it are all things the users has run on the console and then of course the rectangle to the left is your profile.

The ONLY section that is an ad would be the section to the far right, 'What's New on Xbox One'.  Everything else you see will change based on how YOU use the system.

So if you compare that to the 360 dash, you'll see the did just as you asked:  They kept the home screen devoid of ads and focused on what your doing with your system, moving recommendations to the far side. Even those recommendations are suppose to reflect your buying habits over time.  So if your buying games, you'll see more of that recommended.

It doesn't just stop at movies; Mountain Dew, Doritos, Linx / AXE, McDonalds, Honda, Adidas... the list goes on.

Microsoft have been sneaking ads in over the years and it's starting to take the ****.

Please, lets at least try to be fair about this and look at what MS is showing and saying.  They seem to have heard the criticism and made changes for the better.  I mean don't you see the changes?

I really don't know what else it would take to prove that point. I have no doubt that both MS and Sony will push ads to all users, but I also think both are trying to be smarter about it and confine it to marketplace sections or offer it as smart recommendations.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I think I'm looking forward to every feature in that video.  I think when you combine them all, it makes for a better all-around experience than the PS4 will offer.  I'm real excited about it - they're making it harder every day to live with my decision not to get it at launch...

I love how people twist featured content into advertisements. Unlike a couple here, me and the general population love seeing what's new on the market place in an non-intrusive fashion because I actually look to see what content & games interest me on my device. It's not like its showing that double cheeseburgers for ?1.49 is it? Come on..

UI looks fantastic, can really see its final quality coming through.

Everything looks good, I suppose. The console seems a lot like facebook to me, and not just in the UI design. I'm a privacy fan and this just seems too open to me. I certainly won't purchase one in 2013, undecided after that.

Every new console release is about progressing technology forward, but to me, saying "built for the future" would include somewhat futureproofing it... That would mean that the console has expandable drives, which I doubted but had some hope for when I saw the title. It could at least ditch the proprietary hardware choices, but that wouldn't be very MS. Alas, the console is built so that you will buy a new one in 5 years. Meh.

I could point out how every one of your points are wrong or invalid, but it's basically summed up by "you don't really know what you'r talking about and have been listening to to many mis-informed conspiracy theorists"

ummm you can close down privacy completely, not share anything with anyone, not even have friends, disable kinect completely, so in what way is this to open ?

The xbox is built for the future just like the 360 was, a first gen xbox right out of the box today, you can start up and have an old dated UI, less performance and usability and functions. hook it up to the internet and grab the latest update and you have a system that is faster with a modern responsive UI.

that is what they mean by built for the future, it's built to support future technology, they rely less on hardcoded hardware functions and on software function that can be upgraded and changed with time or upgraded as needed.

hardware wise it can also be upgraded since it FULLY supports external disks for EVERYTHING so you don't need to replace the internal drive.

    • This makes me think of Dune for some reason.
    • I'm too old to return to the "good old days" when I was installing custom ROMs and tinkering with my devices - now I just want to turn it on and use it. I've read that banking and payment apps work on Murena /e/OS (I'll have to check the ones I use) and I also really want to support Fairphone 😉

    • NVIDIA announces 35 new AI HPC supercomputers across Europe by Fiza Ali NVIDIA has announced that 35 AI high-performance computing (HPC) supercomputers are planned to open throughout Europe this year. This marks what the company describes as the largest single-year expansion of AI infrastructure in the history of the continent. These new systems, unveiled at ISC High Performance 2026, will be placed at a number of national supercomputing centres, AI factories, and research institutes to provide advanced computing resources to more than three million researchers. Describing AI, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang stated, "AI is the new instrument of science, and Europe is building the infrastructure to put it in the hands of millions of researchers." Built on NVIDIA's Blackwell and Hopper architectures, the new systems will support research in climate science, healthcare, clean energy, quantum computing, and other scientific fields. Among the major projects are the Barcelona Supercomputing Center's MareNostrum 5 AI upgrade, BavariaAI's Blue Swan platform in Germany, Italy's IT4LIA AI factory, Germany's HammerHAI project, and Sweden's Mimer AI Factory. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center plans to expand MareNostrum 5 with NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 and GB200 NVL4 systems. In total, the BSC expects to deliver up to 20 exaflops of AI training performance and 33 exaflops of AI inference performance. This increased computational capability will support research efforts related to climate modelling, biotechnology, energy systems, etc. Furthermore, as part of the IT4LIA project, more than 8,000 GPUs, each based on NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL4 architecture, will be used in Italy. This represents one of the largest AI factory initiatives announced to date. Additionally, the Blue Swan platform from BavariaAI will include about 1,000 GPUs to help develop multimodal AI models for use in the medical field, robotics, and various areas of scientific research. NVIDIA also emphasized in the announcement how rapidly growth of accelerated computing usage is taking place within both energy and climate-related research. The company said Siemens Energy uses NVIDIA-powered technologies to significantly accelerate the process of designing and simulating hydrogen-capable gas turbines. Using those same acceleration technologies, Siemens was able to reduce simulation time by up to 77 percent. The company also highlighted several quantum computing initiatives across Europe. CINECA, EuroHPC, and Pasqal are integrating a quantum processing unit into Italy's CINECA supercomputing centre using NVIDIA's CUDA-Q platform. Meanwhile, researchers at Germany's Julich Supercomputing Centre recently simulated a universal 50-qubit quantum computer on the JUPITER supercomputer. The announcement demonstrates Europe's continued commitment to building out its infrastructure supporting AI and supercomputing as governments, research organizations, and technology companies compete to build out their respective computing capacities and secure their positions in advanced scientific research.
