Windows 8.1 iso won't be available to the public

Recommended Posts

According to Paul Thurrott, Microsoft won't release the .iso to the general pubic.  :/

1) releasing an "official" retail, full 8.1 iso for 8.0 upgraders (like the Technet/MSDN iso's that do not support full upgrades from Win7 but only from 8.0)

Quote: Paul T:

Microsoft told me that is not happening.

Kinda sucks for those who don't have access to a subscription. :(

For people like you that want an ISO you'll get it anyways. Microsoft has never released a RTM ISO to the public (AFAIK). That has never stopped people from getting it though and installing just fine without TechNet/MSDN subscriptions.

I dont think the majority of the public know what the hell is an iso

You say that yet one of the features added in Windows 8 was the ability to mount ISO files as drives. However, it doesn't matter whether the majority of the public will use it, just whether it will benefit end-users.

Again It stand corrected. If they know what an iso is then its safe to assume they can torrent it.

Microsoft has released ISOs for various other products, including Windows 8 and the Windows 8.1 Preview. Just because technically-minded people can download the ISO from non-reputable sources doesn't mean they should have to.

It actually goes further than that, though. "Consumers" here really means any copies of Windows 8 that weren't purchased through Microsoft's Volume Licensing programs. So a small business with 20 PCs to upgrade, for example, will have to do them one at a time via the Windows Store ? so that's 20 separate 3.5GB downloads.

The Windows Store is the only way for consumers (non-enterprise, non-IT Pro) to download and install Windows 8.1. No ISOs will be made available, so each device needs to be updated individually via the Windows Store.

Way to go 3.5GB DOWNLOAD for every device you have!!!!

I didnt said they shouldnt but its not really a lost..

PS: who is that in your sig?

No offline installer = FAIL  No reason to have to DL 3.5 GB x #_of_systems.  I keep a USB thumbdrive with all the Office/Windows SPs, video/audio/etc drivers from the major makers, it saves me a ton of time having to install that stuff on new boxes.  With the size of this update here, even more reason to have a offline installer I can put on a thumbdrive.

Well, it's something that users could do before and can't now - I don't know what else to class that as other than a loss. You're right that it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but it is an inconvenience.

How about that then create a Windows 8.1 ISO USB key and go from there? That's the only Legal place I see where you can do that. Dunno about this Windows 8 being available for download as an ISO as well either?

Unless you are talking about the digitalriver links which are official but not an "easy" upgrade in the least either.

I'm normally a big MS fan, but the release of Windows8.1 is just silly.

How can they think it's acceptable for people who have more then one device to have to download this massive upgrade more then once.

Why can't they just release an ISO so we can upgrade all our devices with only one download.

This is just silly, Why can't they do the right thing for once, there is always something wrong when they release new stuff, but this I really don't get

I was able to do this and it worked, but I had to run the windows 8 setup from that page first, have it accept my windows 8 key and start downloading windows 8, and then cancel it and run the windows 8.1 setup from that page, which then skipped right past asking for a key and downloaded windows 8.1 for me :) (if you just run the windows 8.1 one first it asks for a key but doesn't accept a legit win 8 key, only a "windows 8.1 key".) It may be possible to use one of the generic keys when you run the 8.1 setup first, but I haven't tried that myself yet, I was able to use a generic key during the windows 8.1 install though (once again, the windows 8.1 installer wouldn't accept my legit win8 key at that point), which let me proceed with clean install from the usb I made from the windows 8.1 setup application, and then was able to activate with my real win8 key post-install.

I don't know why microsoft makes this such a pain. If its a free upgrade, then why the hell can't they just let us use our existing windows 8 keys for the clean install process? Seems really arbitrary and stupid...

The clean install was also a lot faster than the windows store upgrade. The upgrade method took forever and rebooted like 50 times lol.

Of course they wont.  How about they let us put our product key into the "Get windows 8 without media"

I hunted down my product key since my PC came with it they dont have a COA sticker, and you have to hunt down the key using software.

Got it, downloaded the thing from microsoft.  "Key is not valid"

Go ###### yourself.  Although other people have the exact same issue.

I was downloading it from the store for THREE HOURS and it didn't go.

+1

Another small but irritating result of upgrading - the language is reset to EN-US. I fail to understand why the hell can't it detect which language pack you're using and retain that!!

    • Ocenaudio 3.20.0 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display. Ocenaudio 3.20.0 changelog: Adds VST3 plugin support, with native editor and real-time preview Adds a redesigned plugin manager, pairing VST2/VST3 versions and managing search paths Adds Trim Silence: one-click removal of leading/trailing silence Adds silence-aware selection: Select Begin/End Silences and Adjust Selection to Silences Adds statistics cli tool Adds metadata cli tool Adds support for updating metadata in more formats Adds support for DDP (Disc Description Protocol), with CD-Text, ISRC, pregap markers and CD (Red Book) timeline Adds support for DSD audio import (DSF/DFF, including DST) Adds Musepack (MPC) encoder Adds support to IMA-ADPCM XQ audio coder Adds TTA and Vorbis support inside Matroska (.mka/.mkv) Adds Apple native AAC/ALAC encoder and decoder on macOS Adds WMA export support Adds read support for more formats: Dolby TrueHD, MLP, MPEG-4 ALS, TAK, RealAudio, xWMA Adds drag-and-drop file export: drag audio straight to Finder/Explorer Adds elastic sample drag editing Fixes stuck audio loop on playback device errors on Windows (DirectSound) Other bug fixes and improvements Download: Ocenaudio 64-bit | Portable | ~40.0 MB (Freeware) Download: Ocenaudio for Linux and Mac OS View: Ocenaudio Homepage | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
    • It's because we aren't gonna see any new consumer stuff til mid-2028 at the earlier. Apparently they want TSMC purely for the AI stuff and an Intel foundry to produce the consumer cards, when it's eventually ready. AMD will prob have a good 6+ months head start but not like it matters, their game support is dire at present.
