PS4 box is very... thin

Recommended Posts

Exterior wise the PS4 has more in common with the PS2 than the PS3. The PS4 is a beautiful console. Hopefully it's insides are reliable and durable. My PS2 still works to this day.

Same here. It's probably one of the worst consoles for reliability in history, maybe only 2nd to the Jaguar but I seemed to have got lucky with my launch PS2 and 3 which both still work. Although both are very noisy :/

I was an unlucky ps2 user. I lost a few due to failed disc drives. My ps3 is fine, of course I waited for a slim to get one, so its quieter than the launch ones.

I still have a phat PS3 - and whilst I cannot fault it, it is rather big/ugly.

Would prefer it a little smaller, but I prefer the appearance of the "phat" PS3 to both of the slim designs.

Prefer the look of the PS4 to all the PS3s though. Looks neater and more modern.

On the back of console size, what actually surprised me most was the controllers

PS3 controller was the dwarf vs the 360. Goes to show they really did focus on ergonomics this time around.

The XB1 sticks look a little uncomfortable compared to the 360s.

Saw comparison photos a while ago but don't believe I ever posted my thoughts here about them.

I really think they went backwards with the X1's controller. It looks like a hybrid of the duke and 360. I haven't held it yet so I hope I'm wrong, but it just looks like hand grips aren't defined enough.

DS4 hand grips remind me of the boomerang controller for PS3. I've read and heard lots of good things about it though. People who hated the DS3 this gen seem to really like it, so that bodes well for me as I'm in the same boat.

You are wrong. :p

The DS4 feels really good in hand. It's much more refined than the older PS controllers yet doesn't lose the familiarity.

Yeah it feels much better. Glad I've got to try it before launch.

I'm glad they went larger.  That is one reason I like the xbox controllers.

I keep hearing that the ds4 is just better overall compared to the ds3, so I cant wait.  I wasn't a big fan of the controller, especially the stick placement, but it sounds like they have tried to improve it in all ways.

Your lucky you got to try them out before it launched.  We still don't have any PS4 or X1 demo stations around my area, so I'm having to rely on official reviews and first hand experiences like guys such as yourself.

Can't wait to get started.

    • NVIDIA officially supports Ubuntu, as linked above with the GeForce NOW Hands on I did in collaboration with Paul Hill.
    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on Linux https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
