Retina iPad Mini Now Available for Purchase From Apple's Online Store

In something of a surprise move, Apple has begun accepting orders for the Retina iPad mini in the United States and several other countries as of midnight Pacific Time on November 12. Orders for the 16 and 32 GB Wi-Fi versions are currently shipping within 1 to 3 business days while orders for the 64 and 128 GB versions along with cellular models are shipping within 5 to 10 days.

The company did not give any early indication that it would launch the Retina iPad mini today, aside from a mention of the seemingly unlikely November 12 date on its GSX sitefor service providers just hours ago.

The quiet launch of the Retina iPad mini may be due to constrained supplies, as rumors have suggested that available quantities of the mini will be extremely low due to display production issues. Apple is unlikely to have enough supply of the tablet to meet demand

Visually, Apple's Retina iPad mini is nearly unchanged from the original mini, though it is both slightly heavier and thicker. The tablet includes a Retina display with a 2048 x 1536 resolution, along with an A7 processor and the M7 coprocessor originally introduced in the iPhone 5s.

The entry-level 16 GB Retina iPad mini will retail for $399 in the United States, with an extra $100 for each increase in capacity and $130 for cellular connectivity.

I could've waited a bit, but I just impulse hit the Buy button after reading about supply issues. Currently in the process of selling off my third-gen iPad.

Various reasons for upgrading: the third-gen iPad isn't as butter smooth as the other iPads on iOS 7, including iPad 2 and mini; realized 16 GB isn't enough for storage needs; and couldn't resist seeing how the iPad Air and retina mini are at feature and spec parity. Smaller size doesn't hurt either.

I am a longtime mini user but went with the Air when it came out. I want to see the mini 2 in hand compared to the Air to decide on which one to purchase for sure

Really any benefit over the regular mini?  $100?  Just for browsing the web email and facebook for the wife...I dont know if she would care haha.

Well the retina display is certainly a huge upgrade.  And obviously it will be much faster as well.

    • Kind of funny. But where will the profit go? To the bottomless pit of another big business where it disappears into the pockets of random money gobbling inverstors who have probably never actually worked a day in their lives, or is it used for the benefit of the workforce or donated to some worthy cause? The first option kills all entertainment value for me, and turns it into very negative marketing, the other two would I would be fine with.
    • Which would have resulted in wealth created by reaping the benefits from those who actually worked by basically doing nothing yourself. I do not have anything against being wealthy but really do despise wealth that is generated this way, and I hate the system for makig this kind of thing possible. The money a business makes should go to the worforce and into improving their jobs, plain and simple (owners should make a decent profit, of course, but proportionally they get way too much than they deserve in comparison to the actual workers).
    • I think it's reasonable to say that AI will never be the same as a human, but I wouldn't go so far as to say AI would always be something less than a human. Things that differentiate it are: 1) The lack of real experiences 2) The lack of biological influences in the thought process (which is not necessarily a bad thing) 3) The extremely small context window which gets cleared with each new session If they could make an AI that uses the entire model file as re-writable memory rather than a small context window and works in real-time, I think they'd have something that you could argue is sentient or at least close to it. So often when I see AI make a mistake or perform poorly at something, I think to myself that a human could have done the same - especially a human with no experiences. At the most basic level, the brain is functioning on math also so don't think there's anything preventing AI from doing something similar. In a way, our current implementation of AI seems to be kind of like a high-level emulator, not necessarily replicating the human thought process but achieving much of the same results.
    • ECG & Blood pressure on my watch 6, but online, found a way to get around it. With blood sugar readings coming, I'm sure that will be locked too, unless someone figures out an app to unlock it too. One of the guys working on the UI8 can't get it to work yet...
    • I've been using AI for my next job search and it's been wonderful. I'm able to instantly get info on companies contacts, pay, etc. Draft cover letters, reword my resume to fit the job description, all in minutes. What would normally be hours of work has turned into minutes. Why use a horse when you have a car?
