Why do all MS first party games have microtransactions?

Recommended Posts

Ryse, Forza, Crimson Dragon, Killer Instinct*, Lococycle, & Powerstar Golf are all chock full of them.

This was one of my worst fears about next gen with game publishers trying to monetize absolutely everything. I cant see this getting any better either to be honest.

*Yes KI is f2p so its kind of understandable in this case.

Doesn't basically EVERY game on Xbox 360 (I can't speak for PS3) have Microtransactions?

Pay to win is retarded, as is $50 season passes on day 1. You're always going to get DLC, but some times it does leave a bad taste in your mouth. Developers can choose how to do it, look at Killzone Shadow Fall, every MP map pack is going to be free (just in case anyone wants to leave a blunt but Sony are doing it to!).

That won't last. We unfortunately live in a world where companies have to increase their revenue year over year or they risk getting shut down or bought out. The $60 model could never have lasted under such a pretense, hence what we see now with micro transactions. Makes you wonder where they'll go next.

Shareholders are pushing MS to become a services company. Profits above all else. That's why there's no Zune client, leaving W8, WP8, Surface users with no user friendly options other than to subscribe to Xbox Video/Music. A strategy which has failed, and will continue to fail as far as the total market is concerned.

Games are now a micro-transaction service.

Season passes are a bizarre concept to me. Pay $xx now, get no DLC and hope the ones that come out or good, or just wait for the DLC to come out and then buy the ones you want, or if it's a better deal, buy the season pass.

I know they do it because then when the game comes out they can offer some "extra premium super deluxe edition" which includes the game and season pass for $75, and it makes sense to the publisher, but why anyone ever buys them day 1 is beyond me.

Greed will take gaming the same place it has taken healthcare. Soon it will be unaffordable for the masses or you will have to accept a half-ass game. Geometry Wars with only 2 shapes ... until you can pay more. The games simply aren't good enough IMO to justify it, the salaries, or the development costs.

Resolutionitis has  made designing good gameplay, animation, and backstory a thing of the past. Along with the redundant FPS.

I've not been keeping up but what kind of microtransactions do Ryse and Forza have?

Believe they both have "pay to win" and day 1 season passes. Pretty sure Forza's is $50. Pay to win can be ignored as long as they don't artificially make grinding/unlocking ridiculously hard in-game to try and encourage spending.

What I don't like about season passes is charging say $50 upfront for 5 map packs, then when the map packs actually go on sale individually charging $15. I'm still buying your content, maybe I don't want all the DLC as some has reviewed ****, don't gouge me on prices as I want to buy individually! One of the things I hate most about the state of our gaming industry. Pay upfront for something you don't know about, won't get for months and have no way of quality checking... don't see that flying in many other industries. Not to mention all the free interest you're giving these companies to sit on your money for months.

I bought 3 season passes last generation and was burned by 2 of them, so refuse to ever buy them again.

First one was for LA Noire which I'd class as the first major release to receive a pass. Only reason I bought it was because they marketed it at the time as a limited time promotion or somethig to buy it cheaper. Few months later of course they dropped the price and a GOTY was released. Fair enough, that happens, but the gap between the drop was very short and left a sour taste.

Second pass was for GoW3 which was a complete disaster. First content pack was given to everyone who bought the game because Epic included it on the disc (N) Then they dropped the price of the pass during Thanks Giving or Xmas before all the content had even released. Completely inexcusable.

Third and last pass was for Borderlands 2 which I bought for 50% off before it even launched via a Steam misprice error. If it wasn't for that I'd be really annoyed when they eventually created a tonne of content outside of the pass months later.

Never buying one again, you always get stung and GOTY versions always include the content much cheaper not long after the final packs are released.

This seems a little weird

price per token
1? => 1ct / token
5? => 1,53 ct / token
10? => 1,74 ct / token (recommended ! )
20? => 1,6 ct / token
50? => 1,85 ct /jtoken (Great Value !!! )
100? => 1,25 ct /token

This is the price of token for Forza 5 if you don't want to grind your credits. Most of us are used to these table in most F2P and mobile game, but look closely... yes : the price are more expensive as you buy more tokens.

The two recommended ones are the most expensive :/

Well it does seem like a spreading practice.

Personally, I really don't care about them offering this on single player games as long a I can still earn the items through playing the game if I wish.

In effect, the micro transactions are paying to cheat, so anyone that wants to skip through a game can pay for it :laugh:

Now, if any of the launch titles required you to pay to win via micro transactions or made the grinding so difficult that you had to pay, I would have a problem with it. So far, no reviews for any of the launch titles have made the claim that was true, so I'm not really worried.

With games like GT6 on the ps3 gaining micro transactions, its clear that this next gen will also adopt such practices. KZ doesn't adopt those practices, so that is a sign that not all games will go down that path.

Killer Instinct doesn't adopt a pay to win micro transaction option either. You can buy the whole game, or you can get the free demo and just buy a couple characters you really want. They have taken a much better approach.

If you are troubled, don't buy into it (like I do and don't buy anything beyond DLCs).

Nothing stops you from buying Killer Instinct outright. It doesn't belond there IMO.

Side note: I saw this earlier on NeoGAF and looking at thread listing today, looks like SonyGAF is out in full force today after almost a week of mostly neutral/positive XBO threads+posts there. :laugh:

I am just guessing here, but my guess is they would like for people to buy things and make money :p

The problem is,  games already cost 60+$ then to succeed in the game you need to pay more money on top of that.  They keep producing DLC at a cost.. so in the end.. a 60$ game could end up costing over 200$ if you want the whole thing.

That is my stance too. If developers begin to turn the "time to unlock ratios" way up to 11 and make games so unjoyable because of micro-transactions, I'm done. Sure fire way to guarantee I will never buy or play one of your games again (N)

Had that issue with Tribes Ascend more than any other game last gen and it was infuriating.

Hopefully this is not the case in Forza 5 (haven't read the reviews yet), and they keep the same tried and tested credit system.

I'm ok with micro-transactions being in the game as long as it's not in your face, pay to win, or it doesn't affect normal playing. Like others have said, if they tune the default game to be feasibly impossible to unlock everything through normal play, then I won't get the game.

Well, you can always buy Nintendo games.  :D

I think the problem with Forza 5 is that it's being released early, and they're going to add a lot through DLC. So rather than waiting, paying $60 for a complete game, you'll pay ~$100 if you want everything.

    • Microsoft releases PowerToys v0.100.1, fixes a bug that made remapped keys misbehave by Ivan Jenic Microsoft just released PowerToys v0.100.1, a patch update that addresses several stability and behavior issues found in v0.100.0. The v0.100.0 patch was a significant update for PowerToys, as it introduced all sorts of new features and additions, such as a rebuilt Shortcut Guide, a Command Palette Extension Gallery, webcam overlay support in ZoomIt, and more. However, the v0.100.0 version also introduced some bugs and stability issues. And now, Microsoft is addressing these issues in the new patch. The most impactful fix in this release perhaps is in Keyboard Manager, where remapped modifier keys were being delivered as system-key events, causing unexpected behavior in apps. The clearest example of this was Alt-to-Backspace remaps, deleting whole words instead of a single character. So, if you thought there was an issue with your keyboard, Microsoft just confirmed that it was PowerToys. Beyond the Keyboard Manager fix, v0.100.1 also addresses several other issues. It fixes a bug with Power Display that was preventing monitors from waking from standby correctly. Additionally, the new update patches Quick Access crashes on launch, and resolves a Shortcut Guide crash that occurred when switching between sidebar sections. Here’s the full changelog: Color Picker Fixed a bug where the main Color Picker window could appear inside the zoomed-in picker view Command Palette Fixed Run history initialization in AOT builds Fixed a bug where the Performance Monitor dock item could show ??? after restart Fixed the Hibernate command using the Sleep icon Limited the "pin to dock" dialog to displays where the dock is enabled Keyboard Manager Fixed modifier keys remapped to non-modifier keys being delivered as system-key events, which caused unexpected behavior in apps such as Alt-to-Backspace deleting whole words Power Display Fixed a bug where selecting On in the monitor power-state control did not wake a monitor from standby Fixed built-in display detection and brightness control on dual-GPU laptops where the internal panel is driven by the discrete GPU PowerToys Run Fixed VS Code Workspaces discovery after VS Code moved recently opened workspace data to shared storage Quick Access Fixed Quick Access flyout crashes caused by unhandled XAML exceptions during launch or page navigation Shortcut Guide Fixed a crash when navigating between Shortcut Guide sidebar sections Fixed number-key rendering in shortcut manifests and added a Postman shortcut manifest Updated bundled shortcut manifests to use the literal number-key token so number keys render correctly across apps ZoomIt Fixed a race condition in audio initialization for ZoomIt video recording You can download PowerToys v0.100.1 from the official GitHub releases page.

    • Grand Theft Auto VI pricing revealed alongside Ultimate Edition and pre-loading details by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Last week, Rockstar revealed Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders will be starting soon, and just a day ahead of that, now the studio has announced the official pricing for the highly anticipated game. This has been a hotly debated topic among fans and industry veterans for a long time, considering the game is expected to be the biggest entertainment product launch ever. The confirmed pricing for the Grand Theft Auto VI standard edition is $79.99, which Rockstar says gives access to the "single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet." This follows what most of our readers thought would happen with the pricing too. At the same time, a $99.99 Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition has been confirmed as well, which lands with "an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story." Pre-ordering will also give fans extra bonuses, including a Vintage Vice City Pack of cosmetic items as well as a free month of GTA+. Head to the official website of the game here to check out all the cosmetic rewards the Ultimate Edition and pre-orders bring. Interestingly, the studio does not mention Grand Theft Auto VI multiplayer at all in today's announcement. Perhaps this will arrive later, following the campaign launch, or the studio is keeping that reveal for a later date. Digital pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI will begin on June 25, 2026, at midnight local time across regions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The title is slated to launch on November 19 on those same platforms. Pre-loading for Grand Theft Auto VI will kick off on November 12, giving players a week to get the game ready on their consoles. As for the physical edition, Take-Two has confirmed that this will be available without a disc, with the box only containing a download code inside. This will be purchasable starting November 12, giving players who take this route time to pre-load the title as well.
