My friends Xbox One is broken

Recommended Posts

A close friend of mines received his Day One: Xbox One from Amazon just like I did on launch day.  We both hooked it up around the same time as well.

We both discussed the pros and cons of the system and so forth.

Now lets fast forward a week later.  My friend's Xbox One has bit the dust.  It started while he was trying to get into Battlefield online match, it wouldn't let him in, and not only that, it would also freeze up his Xbox One.  He quits out of the game outright and tries to go back in, and this time the game disc won't read...  Turns off the Xbox One and turns it back on, makes sure all games and apps are closed, ejects BF4 disc puts it back in, the disc won't read...  Ejects disc, and puts in NBA2K14, tries to play it, no disc is recognized at all.

Calls Microsoft, they put him through the usual unplug cables and such.  Make sure all game and apps and such are closed (usual scripted walk through's when you call support)...

Uninstall game and Re-Install game (which takes forever as it is), disc is recognized again, but there is a disc read error..

They are shipping him a coffin and giving him a copy of Dead Rising 3 as a "I'm sorry gift"

I've been on a pro-Microsoft tour as of late, but that is reversing mighty fast.  And this goes for more than Xbox at that.

Yes, my Xbox is fine.  But seeing the Xbox One's dropping like flies.  I have to wonder, how long will mines be fine for...

Again, this isn't surprising. You'll be taking a higher risk when buying a launch-day product than if you waited a while for them to iron out the issues. You can say, "but that just shouldn't happen" all you want, but it does.

On the plus side, at least they're compensating him with a game. (Y)

How did he uninstall and reinstall if the drive is bad?

It glitched..  He was unable to uninstall the game.  Turned off the console, turned it back on, the disc was recognized again.  He was able to reinstall the game (again)... But when he tried to launch the game, it told him he had to have the disc in the drive.  It was in the drive.

Yes, my Xbox is fine.  But seeing the Xbox One's dropping like flies.  I have to wonder, how long will mines be fine for...

im healthy as a horse. seeing people dropping like flies has me wondering how long will I live.

point is, we cant judge if and when something like this will happen because of some other case of it happening. its common for launch stuff to have bugs, defects and other things that will be reduced with tweaks in the manufacturing. it happens to every single piece of electronics released by any company.

its becomes a problem if a large percentage of the product is bad. this is not happening. its just a tiny amount of bad drives at the moment.

Just sounds like his BF4 is broke and not his Xbox. Has he even tried another game?

There's going to be problems with launch hardware on this scale. Why get annoyed when the service from MS is good?

NBA 2K14 same issue...

It seemed like it would be fine... Especially after uninstalling game and turning off console unplugging cables and such.. hooking everything back up... the games were able to be re-installed... but when you go to launch them, it tells you that the disc has to be in the tray... which makes no sense at all... If you are able to install from disc, that means the disc is being recognized... but when launching game, it is not.

It is one of those things.

Like Sony's launch. If you look at the ratio of percentage shipped and failures. It will be pretty low.

It probably just seems worse as it is a friend of yours.

Product launches. You always have failures. Best thing is call support and hope they get it sorted quickly and to be fair with MS, their support folk may be a nightmare to deal with but MS have a good system in place which gets replacements sorted quickly.

Surely its not the reliability of the Xbox which has made you lose interest in the Xbox One, cause all Xbox's have had reliability issues well before the Xbox One.

What are the other reasons?

I think it's Microsoft as a whole (and I was actually on the verge of going all things Microsoft: Phone, Tablet, etc.  I have since returned the Surface 2.  on fence about Windows Phone.  ...

I grow tired of things after a certain amount of time.

I was on a Google kick, and now am ready to dump Android and all other Google services...

I was a Playstation fanatic and while I still like Sony, it's not the same love like I had for them in the late 80's and early 90's...

Nintendo take's TOO long to release the games I want ( I'll buy Zelda, Metroid, Mario Kart, Kid Icarus, and such over and over and over again., if they could get the games out the door and on to store shelves.)

Only company I have not given much attention to is Apple.  I do own a iPad 2 (thats because all other tablets sucked when the iPad was released).

Maybe it's Apple's time to get some attention from me.

It is one of those things.

I think it's the $500 price tag, and then it drops just like that, that's what I think annoys me...

This isn't like a $50 loss... It's a 1/2 a grand...

I've never bough a extended warranty for ANY console I've ever owned... And I went and got the 3yr with accidental to make sure my behind is covered.

Um, where has it been said that X1's are dropping like flies?

There has been less chatter about X1's failing than ps4s at launch, so I don't think anyone would say its at a big level. Sure that could change, but right now it seems to falling in line.

The key to all of this is how MS or Sony handle a failure. MS is being especially proactive in this regard. They just go ahead and offer you advanced replacement and a free game of your choice.

As long as these companies are willing to quickly make good on their warranty, that's a good sign.

If only that were true for all of us ;) :P

The prompt response to the issue is good I guess.

Dropping like flies may be stretching it.  But to think we both ordered during E3 at the same time from Amazon.  My console has been mint so far.  But when it happens to someone you know, it lingers in the back of your head.

Its not xbox one fault but its the xbox one's optical drive fault.

That kind of disc-jamm are quite common occurrence on slot-loading type,

which why I prefer non slot-loading whenever possible,

whenever disc-jamming happened, it would have less devastating effect,

compared when it happened in slot-loading drive.

I am impressed with Microsoft response time to this at least.

They are trying to get the console to him, by Monday (and he called during Thanksgiving).  They allow him to keep the cables and his Day One Controller.  and things of that nature.  Just has to return the physical console (just like during the RRoD days)

Edit: And he gets a free game.  It's a sucky way to get a game, but at least it's free.

Honestly there's right now absolutely no proof about the PS4 or One broking at an unusual rate for launch systems.

Yes some of them will break or be DOA. More than later in the life span of both consoles. Specially since lot are being sold right now. It sucks. But it's not a reason to have a negative opinion of a product. MS honored the warranty and sent him a new console with a  free game.

I understand that lot of people got burned last gen. I was one of those with 2 broken consoles (RRoD on launch model and DOA HDMI port on elite model). But right now there's no proof the failure rate is anything close to what we have seen last generation with the RRoD.

Both consoles so far seem to be handling the workload very well from what i can gather in reviews and in real life with my friends.

My experience with the One has been exceptional so far.  It just works.  At least for me.

Reading about a few failures online doesn't really cross your mind much.  But when it happens to you or a friend.  It kinda makes you think of it a little bit more.

This was my mindset on the Xbox One's failure rate on Wednesday 11/27/13:  %.0001 failure rate.

Here's my mindset on the Xbox One's failure rate on Friday 11/29/13  %80  (YES THIS IS A PARANOID EXAGGERATION AND DOES NOT ACTUALLY REFLECT THE FAILURE RATE OF THE XBOX ONE)

its becomes a problem if a large percentage of the product is bad. this is not happening. its just a tiny amount of bad drives at the moment.

Even if a large percentage is bad as long as MS and/or Sony honor the warranty and sort things out before the warranty period is over i don't see this as a problem at all.

The RRoD was a problem because initially the warranty period for the 360 was 3 months only (the warranty period of both the One and the PS4 is 1 year i think which is a lot more reasonable). Lot of first year 360s broke after the short warranty period was over and well before MS extended it (i think MS extended the warranty period only 3 years after the launch). People with a broken 360 were stuck with a brick and had to pay to repair it or sell it on ebay. There was back then like over 10 pages of search results for the keywords RRoD XBox 360 on ebay.

Right now things are looking perfectly normal. It's a launch product. Some people will have problems. MS and Sony will honor the longer warranty and replace the problematic systems and both will likely sort things out before fall of next year.

Normal stats for electronics is a 5% failure rate, even with the massive media hype about the PS4 failures, they are supposedly far below that. even under a single percentage. so by all accounts, both consoles despite being high failure rate electronics, are well below the average failure rate.

Reading about a few failures online doesn't really cross your mind much.  But when it happens to you or a friend.  It kinda makes you think of it a little bit more.

Yeah i agree and understand. Perfectly normal. In fact one of my friend just got a DOA XBox One last weekend. The HDMI port was not working. He was frustrated a lot lol. He had two RRoD last gen too so right now he is totally ****ed off about it.

Right now i'm waiting. I wont touch the One or PS4 before fall of next year just in case ;) Anyway i want to see what the Steam Boxes will look like before making a decision.

Enough said.  Get over it and enjoy your new toy.

I'm enjoying the heck out of it so far....

On a side note,  LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is  TON OF FUN....I give it a 9/10...  Kinda don't regret choosing it over Ryse and BF4

    • Exactly, this is just the beginning. I hope that by that time, our inept politicians devise something like a Universal Basic Income, because unemployment and poverty rates will skyrocket otherwise. And believe me, robots that perform physical work aren't a matter of IF, but WHEN. No career is truly safe from AI/robots, it's just a matter of time.

Subtitle Edit 5.0.0 changelog: Subtitle Edit 5 is a major new release and a big step for the project. For the first time, Subtitle Edit runs natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux from a single, modern, cross-platform codebase. The builds are self-contained, so no separate .NET installation is required, and on macOS and Linux the needed media components (mpv/ffmpeg) are bundled in. Please read before upgrading: Subtitle Edit 5 is a new application, not just an update of Subtitle Edit 4. It has been rebuilt from the ground up to be cross-platform, so: It is not 100% the same app. The look, layout, and some workflows have changed. Some things are in different places, and a few behave differently than in SE4. Not every SE4 feature exists in SE5 yet. SE5 covers all the core editing, conversion, sync, video playback, OCR, and online services, but some of the more specialized SE4 tools are not available yet. Features will continue to be added. If you rely on a specific SE4 feature that is missing, please keep SE4 installed alongside SE5. The easiest way to run both side by side is to use the Portable versions of SE4 and SE5, which keep their settings separate and do not interfere with each other. Which version should I use? Subtitle Edit 5: recommended for most users on Windows 10 (22H2) or newer, macOS 12+, and Linux. Subtitle Edit 4: please continue to use SE4 if you are on an older Windows version (Windows 7/8), or on older / slower computers where SE5 may not run well. SE4 remains available and is the right choice in those cases. To run SE4 and SE5 at the same time, use the Portable versions - you can try SE5 while keeping SE4 as a fallback. • Google Pixel 11 series: Here's what to expect by Hamid Ganji Google Pixel 10 series In recent years, Google has successfully turned its Pixel devices into worthy contenders in the smartphone market. The search giant is now preparing to launch the Pixel 11 series in just a few months, and many Pixel fans are likely wondering what Google has in store for them this year. The next lineup of Google smartphones includes four devices: the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. This year, we don’t expect Google to bring revolutionary upgrades to its handsets, and the Pixel 11 series is likely to receive modest hardware improvements alongside a slew of AI-powered features. Here are the rumored specifications of the Google Pixel 11 series ahead of its official debut: When will the new Pixel phones be unveiled? The last two generations of Google Pixel phones (Pixel 9 series and Pixel 10 series) were launched in August, unlike the previous three generations that debuted in October. With that in mind, we expect Google to unveil the Pixel 11 series sometime in August 2026. The exact launch date has yet to be confirmed. Google Pixel 11 CAD renders - Image via AndroidHeadlines How much will the Pixel 11 series cost? Predicting the final price of upcoming smartphones has become increasingly difficult. As you may know, RAM and memory prices are rising sharply, leading to significant increases in the cost of consumer electronics. Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that price increases for some future Apple products are unavoidable, suggesting that the iPhone 18 series could become more expensive. Google has remained tight-lipped about any potential price increases for the Pixel 11 series. If the company manages to maintain last year’s pricing structure, here’s what the lineup could cost: Pixel 11: $799 Pixel 11 Pro: $999 Pixel 11 Pro XL: $1,199 Pixel 11 Pro Fold: $1,799 Given current market conditions, it may be difficult for Google to avoid raising prices unless it adopts cost-saving measures, such as equipping the base model with 8GB of RAM. Google Pixel 11 series anticipated specs: We expect the Google Pixel 11 series to debut with a new Tensor G6 processor as well as an upgraded camera system. The overall design, however, is expected to remain largely unchanged across the lineup. However, a patent filed by Google suggests the company is working on a removable battery for its smartphones, and we could see this feature make its way to the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Given that nearly all smartphones today lack removable batteries, such a feature would be a welcome addition to future Pixel devices. That said, it may not arrive with this year’s lineup after all, and the final decision is yet to be made by Google. The Pixel 11 series could also face an uphill battle in the market. In the Android segment, Samsung is performing well with the Galaxy S26 series, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup is also expected to launch next month. On the other hand, Apple is preparing to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September alongside its first foldable iPhone.
