simonlang
I'm currently between PC's and don't have a Linux install set up yet  . They're all so pretty! Then it gets about time! Customization is one of Linux strong points. If you like you can spend hours and hours and get a brand new look every day. Many file managers docks iconsets etc. I bet windows users would kill for. Even more impressive so if you keep in mind thats all for free. The last days i used KDE the first time since years i came to the conclusion this is more feature packed than windows or mac os. Well, to be fair, you can customize every element in Windows too, even have multiple file managers, docks, iconsets, etc.. just need to put a little more effort into the visuals.. not sure why after all these years they've never made it a bit easier to skin though, kind of stupid. You can even run KDE in Windows if that's your thing. What irks me in some Linux desktops is frequent theme breakage, looking at Gnome specifically.. every new version seems to break the existing themes, can sometimes be tricky finding one you like that actually works. KDE (my favorite) doesn't seem to have that issue though.. although matching QT and GTK themes that aren't based on Oxygen can be tricky too, ugh. And thanks for the heads up on SolydK.. don't think I've tried that one yet, been looking for a new one to experiment with.
simonlang
i disagree a bit here. looking back at windows xp, yes, that you could really customize and was skinnable. vista or 7? no, sorry. chosing a new wallpaper and changing the color of the aero glass theme is not skinning for me. even windowblinds, one of the starts of the past, is by now restricted heavily because of actual windows theming (i bet win 8 is even worse here)

Even in Windows 8. Just as a random example, how about the Ubuntu look for 7 and 8. Not that I'm a fan of the look, but it's an example of changing a tad more than just wallpaper and glass tint.
