I use to use newegg exclusively, but I am moving more to amazon also... I liked it better when newegg was a tech site, not a tech + everything else site

NewEgg used to get tons of my money. That stopped ages ago... Amazon really makes them look foolish now...

Use "free shipping" on NewEgg and you'll be waiting a month for your part as they somehow take weeks to ship it from Newark, NJ to Philadelphia, PA. I can drive it in under 90 minutes... ShopRunner helps alleviate this problem, but it is too late. I'm far to used to Amazon's prime shipping where I can order it and have it as soon as the same day in Philadelphia or free Sunday delivery. Not to mention the prices are almost always cheaper.

If I am ever in a pinch I can always drive to MicroCenter and get it same day with Amazon and NewEgg price matching.

Honestly, I have no need to visit NewEgg...

Really? I'm near Pittsburgh and free shipping never seems to take that long for me from the Newark, NJ distribution center.. I think the longest I've had was 5 days for the free shipping... now when it comes from their California DC it seems to take forever... especially if they send it through USPS smart post...

About 3 months ago I went through the entire process of building a new computer. Started a thread on it and the whole nine. I then found out I might be losing my job so I decided it might not be the best idea so I held off. Actually waiting to see what Apple announces on the 16th to see what I do next (and technically to find out I definitely still have a job, I find out on the week of October 20th). However back then I actually put the entire build on both Newegg and Amazon. Newegg had a better deal on the CPU. Amazon had the better deal on the GPU. And it went on and on. It was like they knew eachothers prices on every item and let the other have the better price on one item but beat each other on another item. It was pretty damn crazy.

When all was said and done, I could have probably saved about $125 if I decided to get the best price for each item on both sites.

Getting all the parts from one site or the other, NewEgg beat them on a whole, as the same exact build cost $23 more on Amazon.

However, Amazon was ALL 2 day shipping thanks to Prime.

Newegg was not 2 day shipping, and some of the items actually required a signature (believe both the CPU & GPU did), which is not necessarily a bad thing, but also maybe not a good thing.

If I had to do it, I would have went with Amazon just so I had everything from one place and in 2 days.

If I was smart though, I would have mixed and matched from both sites to save that $125.

i checked multiple sites when searching for parts. newegg and amazon were the most popular choices but amazon only had one thing that was cheaper than the prices that i got on newegg. I was fairly happy with newegg and amazon but now that you mention it im starting to notice some of the things your talking about. the first thing to arrive was the case (ordered from amazon) and days later followed the parts from newegg. I HAD NO IDEA THEY SOLD DOG FOOD! WTF is up with that????? weird..............

I'm in the UK, so Newegg isn't really an option for me. But Amazon is great.

Got caught out with the old free trial trick, where they just know you are going to forget about it, and auto renew it for a year, but I buy so much stuff from there, that I think it's worth it in the end. Free next day delivery and Instant Video are nice things to have.

I still shop around though. eBuyer turned out to be pretty good when building my new PC, as did Dabs. Better than Overclockers and Scan, even though I have free shipping from Scan.

And lets not forget eBay. I still get loads of stuff from there, even though I've had my fair share of problems.

I have managed to get them all resolved though. Amazing what an email to the CEO can achieve :D

I just bought a new cable modem from Newegg.  Payed Wednesday and used EggSaver free shipping.  Got it Friday.  From Memphis to Houston in 2 days.  I still prefer Newegg on a lot of stuff since Amazon charges me tax.

I just love Amazons comical inability to make their search engine work for tech stuff, like if you're looking for 120hz monitors and 80% of what they show you is 60hz, or 27" and here's a 22 and a 24 and a 23, or if you want an AMD A series laptop and they add a randomass system without even AMD parts in it...

Yeah, I'll stick with Newegg until they can figure that ###### out.

I've stopped liking Newegg when they decided they wanted to compete with Amazon.  Newegg used be a place for mostly PC Parts, now you can buy dog food from the site.

HA! OMG ... you totally can!

So? The stores do that all the time. For example, WalMart used to sell stuff without groceries... and now, they are selling groceries in their stores. Target as well. More profit for them if they sell other stuff other than PC parts.

In case you didn't know, WalMart is selling the coffins now:

They are finding other ways to make money... that simple.

For example, I am only repairing the PCs for people... and I am not making any enough money.. so I get the idea that I could sell parts in my store... so I could make more money than before.

That's how they are doing in their retail/online stores.

  • 2 weeks later...

I use both and see which one has the part I need. For some stuff I go Newegg but for others I hit up Amazon. Mostly computer parts is newegg, everything else is Amazon.

yup, this.  I just like looking at and comparing computer stuff better on newegg.   but amazon is fine for when i know exactly what i want and go right to it.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just bought a motherboard, CPU and msata SSD off amazon because I needed them in a hurry, did next day shipping on a Friday and got them Saturday via fedex for a whole $30 in shipping

Later on Friday after I ordered the parts, I noticed the i5-4690k CPU I ordered charged me at $270, thought that was higher then I saw it when I ordered it, went back and looked it was at that moment for sale by amazon for $199, chatted with them and they refunded me the price + 10% and gave me the shipping for free.

Newegg last time I had a price issue it was my problem and they couldn't do anything about it   and another time when I ordered from them, they forget to ship me something (which it was a box of about 10 things, and the item missing was a small tube of thermal paste, so easily looked over), they wanted me to pay $5 for shipping the missing item!

  • 1 month later...

I used to get most of my parts from Newegg, but not anymore after the BS that Newegg is pulling off.

I bought parts that are suppose to be new, but got parts that are clearly refurbished. (Including one time where I got two "new" hard drives with the word "recertified" written on it.)

Not only is Newegg trying to pass refurbished products as new, but then I have to pay for shipping the products.

    • NVIDIA officially supports Ubuntu, as linked above with the GeForce NOW Hands on I did in collaboration with Paul Hill.
    • TO be clear I am not running linux today, however I keep thinking about it. And I want to make sure there are minimal obstacles if I decide to make that switch in the coming months.
    • Yes, I actually glossed over the Linux part from the OP. You could always go for a 9070 XT and if you really want to play Ray Traced games in the future, GeForce Now is pretty damn good on Linux https://www.neowin.net/news/nvidias-native-geforce-now-app-for-linux-bridges-the-gaming-gap-hands-on/
    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
