Useful Tip for Windows 8 'Power Users'

Recommended Posts

You may already know this, but here I useful trick/tip I found that may ease any qualms you have with Window 8's new interface.

1. Right Click on the taskbar

2. Select Toolbars

3. Click New Toolbar

4.  Select Program Files (86)

Now you have sort of the start menu back,  (perhaps a Windows 95-esque start menu) :)

The old start menu was garbage anyway, like I want to dig through a bunch of readmes and ****ty offline landing pages.

Which ones?

I don't see those

While I do like the new start screen, I have to say that a 'power user' probably wouldn't let the old start menu get cluttered either.

The new START menu gets just as cluttered if you let it also. All those Uninstall entries, etc. etc. still show in all programs.

I just go to the shortcut locations and use the "Hide" option, or delete them.

But as far as Im concerned, the new START menu takes way more time and clicks to navigate than the Win 7 menu.

A real power user wouldn't even use that stupid Start screen. lol!!

Guys just a sec, I wasn't being malicious, I was genuinely curious about the clutter in the start menu, because I didn't see it

(And thought I could learn to optimise it further)

It's less of an issue in Windows 7, but if you do it as this post suggests, unless you want to cull all of the folders in your program files for the uninstall.exe, the readme, and the other random files that get installed along with the actual application .exe, it's really just a mess using folders for your program directory.

Generally when you installed things up to XP, they would stick a folder on your start menu, and in it would be 3 or 4 files along with the .exe, and sometimes subfolders if there were sub applications. You can still find them in newer versions of Windows, but at least in 8 they've been hidden away behind an "All Programs" button.

Ahh, that's where I got confused, my bad, the folders you see under all programs are actually set by me custom, it wasn't that hard once I figured out what I wanted, and where (in one respect it was easier than setting that up in xp)

This is a terrible tip for those who have tons of programs and also x64. Why not just create shortcuts to the icons you need on your desktop? So much easier, no need for a convoluted menu.

Hell, organize them into groups on the Start Screen. That's what those features are there for.

I've tried to group items by function, developer and then program.  This creates a nice tree-like structure that is easy to drill down into without being overwhelming to look at from any level within the tree (well, maybe the Utilities section is a little congested).

This is genuinely the funniest thing I have seen all day.  A tip for power users?  Really?  People used to do this back in the days of Windows 95.

I may have misunderstood, but why on Earth would people do this "back in the days of Windows 95"? The toolbar that Atomic Wanderer Chicken posted is reminiscent of the Windows 95 Start menu, so creating this toolbar would be redundant.

i've seen toolbars like this back in the win98 days, it would help those that wanted the most used applications accessible from the desktop.

Now it's almost 2014 and people are still talking about the Start Menu? Really? I use win8.1 and i barely go to the Start Menu, i usually launch my apps from the Search (from the Charms) if it's an app i don't use much; the rest of the apps that i use everyday i have them pinned in the taskbar; much more faster than using the old classic Start Menu.

Because back on 95/98 and XP to an extent, if you wanted quick access to folders, creating a shortcut was about your best option. Also, you could put multiple applications in there so it took up less space, unlike the shortcut menu that started in 98 ( I think) which put applications on the taskbar but also loaded application windows.

IMO the Superbar is one of the greatest improvements to come to Windows in a long time, as they did a really good job of smashing three separate things together and making it work (launcher, folder browser, and taskbar).

I've always wondered why (in Windows Vista and up) would someone ever go to All Programs and go through the monotony of menus to get to a program when they can just click start and type name (or even part of the name) hit enter and done.

Start menu how it was needs to die and I don't miss it per say. Power Users NEVER needed all those menus. Real power user would use WIN+R and type their commands or do it all from PowerShell. :p

"Power users" like torturing themselves?

    • Google Pixel Watch 2 gets a massive 41% discount: Is it time to finally buy one? by Paul Hill Are you in the UK and looking to upgrade your smartwatch or buy one for the first time? If so, then you need to check out this awesome deal on the Polished Silver Google Pixel Watch 2 (LTE) as it’s 41% off and available for just £139.72. Aside from being the lowest price it has ever been on Amazon, it’s also way lower than the £199 price listed on the UK Google Store. According to the delivery information, the watch should arrive before Father’s Day, so if you act quickly, you can get it delivered in time. If you see this deal late, sign up for a free trial on Amazon Prime and get it delivered quicker. What the Pixel Watch 2 offers If you can cast your mind back several years, you might remember that Google bought the smartwatch company Fitbit. The Pixel Watch series integrated many Fitbit features including the heart rate tracking, stress management, and temperature variations for sleep and menstrual cycle tracking. The Pixel Watch 2 is also packed with health and safety features including an ECG app, irregular heart rhythm notifications, fall detection, Emergency SOS, and Safety Check. These features protect a whole swath of people, whether it’s young people out running alone, Safety Check is there to alert others if things go wrong, or whether it’s the elderly prone to falls. While you can pair the Pixel Watch 2 with any Android phone (iOS not officially supported), Google has taken steps to ensure it works extra well with Pixel phones, tablets, and earbuds. When paired with a Pixel phone, you can screen unknown calls and get transcripts on the watch. The Pixel Watch 2 comes with an always-on display and a full-featured smartwatch operating system. It’ll be little surprise for you to hear then that this watch’s battery life is limited to just 24-hours. Finally, if you’re looking for a device to monitor your workouts then the Pixel Watch 2 could be for you with features like Auto Workout mode which automatically starts, pauses, and stops your activity logs so you don’t have to. You can get information such as pace, heart rate zones, and laps. While many people find the free features sufficient, there is also an option to get a Fitbit subscription to unlock more. If you do decide to take out the optional subscription, it costs £7.99 per month of £79.99 annually. Should you buy it now? If you’ve been looking to get a new smartwatch, given the all-time low price of this Google Pixel Watch 2, it’s definitely something to consider. Features like ECG and irregular heart rhythm notifications set this device above many of the other more affordable models. This one is more on par with the Apple Watch series. It’s not ideal for iPhone users as there’s no official support, additionally, those looking for a multi-day battery life won’t find that here. However, if you’re an Android owner, especially a Pixel owner, then this watch will integrate tightly. It’s also a very aesthetic device, so if you care about looks, this watch could be for you too. Google Pixel Watch 2 (LTE) Polished Silver: £139.72 (Amazon UK) / MSRP: £236.62 This Amazon deal is U.K. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. If you don't like it or want to look at more options, check out the Amazon UK deals page here. • I hope people in Pennsylvania are prepping for water supply issues if they're anywhere near it, apparently those data centres mess up the local water demand due to cooling
    • It's an improvement overall but I'm also of the idea that they should just give users more options and let them have the menu they like instead of just going with one outline and some minor options (though finally getting rid of recommended is great). I know people who don't want pins and would rather it all be just the list/grid of apps. Others just want pins, others want them side by side and not up on top of each other. Have more layout options and let people mix and match, problem solved.
    • Hi all, I've got a Pioneer VSX 815-k receiver. Love this thing, however, my cat did his business on top of it and kinda recked it... Only analog works (5.1 surround RCA inputs). Normally I'd use toslink from mobo to digital in on the receiver, but the result is a ton of loud white noise over the music. Analog works just fine, so I'm forced to use the 3.5mm jacks on the rear of the mobo to the RCA inputs on the receiver. The issue I face is that there is no DTS or anything fun.. Originally, I could play all my MP3s or watch YouTube etc, and the subwoofer would be booming as I like because of the mixing from the DAC. Now with the analog, none of that is happening  I'm wondering if there's some kind of software solution for Windows to get the subwoofer to play as it did when I had it hooked up through toslink, but for analog out instead. As of now, only audio files that were encoded specifically to produce sound to the sub, will work, but nothing else. As to which onboard sound solution my mobo has, this from the website's description: 121dB SNR AMP-UP Audio with ALC1220 & High-End ESS SABRE 9018 DAC with WIMA audio capacitors Sound BlasterX 720°, the top-of-the-line audio engine solution for 4K gaming and entertainment  yea it uses that wonky SBx 720 app to change the audio effects n stuff.. but doesn't help with my issue Eventually yea, I wanna buy a new one. They're about $80 on ebay after shipping, but that will have to wait.
    • Serious question here. Why is the start menu such a heated topic? I can't remember the last time that I used the start menu for anything at all other than it pops up when I hit the WIN key on my keyboard before I type for the program I want to run and then hit Enter or to restart my machine. I honestly wish it would just go away, and it just be replaced with the PowerToys Run menu. Am I missing something with the Start menu? I see people always talking about installing third party replacements and such, but I just wonder what some are actually using the Start menu for that I might be missing out on. Genuine question. Hopefully not offending anyone as I know everyone has their own way to work and access things in the OS.
