yah the tcon300 is a piece... but i really like the e-10! it takes good pics for me.. but yeah, eventually i will upgrade, i just had to go digital, cuz everyone was just jumping into it from 35mm. plus, i had a tight budget, and i got this for a good deal, hardly used and in great condition. oh yeah, its not supposed to be compatible with the microdrive like u said. i would probly never do that anyways.

but hey, i still take lots of pictures with my true SLR, but theres two things i like about the e10, image quality, and TTL viewfinder... why do you think they make so many with EVF?? it takes away the quality and in my oppinion, is hard to focus with.

the reason they make it with the EVF, is because 1.) alot of people are intimidated to use the TTL viewfinder, if you can' believe that. Look at how many consumer cameras (especially sony) come with the electronic version... people just like to see the pic "bigger" for some reason.. but it really does suck, and it takes no skill at all to use. The best way to compose your shot is through the TTL viewfinder (TTL=through the lens). Also, on some cameras, the TTL viewfinder has guides to help you compose things, while the EVF doesn't.. so it would make it that much harder to make sure everything was lined up or oriented right. /and the final drawback to using EVF...it sucks power like no tomorrow. The only time i'd use it on the e10 would be if i had to take a picture over my head, like at a club or something, because of the nice 10 degree tilt feature. Other than that, just use the ttl finder. BTW, how much did you pay for it? because if you paid around 1000$ for it, you should return it, and consider getting the nikon d70. It's right around 1000$, and you can buy a cheapo 28-100mm 3.5-5.6G series lens. It costs about 100$, and for the money, it's a decent lens. Focusing isn't the fastest, nowhere near as fast as a D series or AFS series, but its decent, and the pictures come out great (a tad bit soft, but a quick unsharp mask in nikon capture or photoshop will fix that.

Evan

BTW, if you are trying to really get into the hobby, if you haven't already, shoot Raw format (QRF files for olympus) they may take more space then a jpg, but you get more image data, you don't get the magenta cast, and you can edit so much more after the fact, such as white balance, exposure.etc.... just as if you were editing it right before you took the picture.

hey SirEvan, what camera do you use? i want yours, it takes beautiful images!

Camera is in my profile below..

It's a Nikon D1 professional body. 2.74MP, nearly full frame sensor (i believe it's like18x24mm or something, while full frame is like 24x35 or something i forget)

it retailed for around 3-4000 new, but since it's 3 years old now, you can find them for around 1000-1500 on ebay, since nikon doesn't sell them anymore (they upgraded to the d1x, d1h, and now d2h) everyone thinks because it's 2.74 its crappy, but what you need to realize is that the sensor is about 4 times larger than any 2,3,4,5,6 mp sensor you'll find in consumer digitals (they're usually a 1/1.8" sensor) what that means is that the sensor in my camera, being almost as large as a 35mm negitive, has much larger photosites (light detectors on the chip) so it can produce much higer resolution files. most consumer digital cameras produce images at 72dpi, my camera shoots native 300dpi. This means that while the best you could get from a consumer digital is an 8x10 (even from a 4 or 5 mp digital) I can produce 13x19 and 16x20 images with no image quality loss. I'm thinking of buying the d70 as a backup body, and then selling my d1 later on to get a d1x, or maybe a d2/d2x whenever it comes out.

All in all, I own about 6000$ worth of gear right this minute.

SirEvan, try about half of the price you thought! i got it for about 500. but yeah, i like the quality that the SHQ puts out, and the pictures seem silky smooth like canons CMOS sensors output. i've thought about the d70, cuz i still have a bunch of nikon lenses from my 35mm like most ppl, but that might be the upgrade in future.

BTW, do you think canon or nikon is better? i cant figure it out when it comes to digital for these two companies.

to enable raw, i think theres a special menu setting.. i forget, i haven't owned my E10 in like 2 years.

As for nikon vs/canon, I honestly would have to say nikon, and not just because I use it. I know alot of people that shoot canon, and alot of people that shoot nikon. The canon bodies seem to come out faster than nikon, with more features, etc (such as the 1ds 14mp body) but at the same time, canon tends to make their layouts a tad complex and difficult. I know many people that have picked up a canon, and for some features/functions, have to look down at the body each shot to see where buttons and such are, whereas nikon has a more simple layout, and you can continue shooting without having to look at the body.

As far as consumer cameras are concerned, i'd go either way, nikon and canon both produce extremely fine 2-4mp 300-500$ consumer cameras.

and 500$ for your e10 is a steal, considering that they're around 800-900$ now. When i bought mine they were like 1600$

The D70 looks to be a real contender against canons 300D. Its a well designed camera, based on the f100/n80 body design, and has a newer sensor than the d100. Even though it's made of plastic, im sure it can take a beating. My n80 film body has been banged around a few times by accident, and it doesn't even have a scratch on it. Plus when you figure that if you slap a high quality lens on the end of the d70, you can get just as good pictures as you could from a d1x. the price is a steal as well, 999$. As soon as I can afford the upgrade, I'm going to junk my n80 body, and get the d70 to use as a backup to the d1 that I own.

Evan

SirEvan what do u mean 'junk' your n80?

yeah i thought the price was right so i jumped at it. and another primary reason why I got it is because of the superbly built body, sturdy, heavy, deep grip, and personally, thats what I love.

EDIT: the e-10 came with a 64, and 32mb cards, plus a tripod, and the recharge NiHM batts that dont originally come with the cam. thats another reason i felt the cam had a good price tag. no flaws on it either.

as for canon vs. nikon, dont you like complexity? I know i do, it makes it seem more reliable, but yeah, i do want controls right there at my fingertips too. good point on nikon ;)

BTW, do you use any point and shoot digicams? many ppl on neowin are using canon a80 with nice results.

and when talking about film, which optics do YOU think top the bunch? ex. zeiss, leica, mamiya, nikon, etc.?

Heres a shot I took for contrast and depth of field. Hope you like everyone...

NOTE: all images are usually sized down from 2240 x 1680 to fit Neowin's standards from me. All images I take are compressed too because of maximum file size.
