This is a macro shot of the rope that symbolizes the uniting of the states. There is one between every state.

Here you can see the Atlantic side of the memorial (I'm standing on the Pacific side's ramp). Each of those posts, for the lack of a better word, symbolizes a state or U.S. territory. As mentioned before, the rope is between each of them.
