I hope this is the right area.

I noticed recently an icon appear in the notification area.

See image

It does not open, when you point-over does not say what it is and I can't find it in processes.

I did have this before a few years ago, can't remember how I got rid of it.

Any ideas?

Thanksin advance

Lee

Windows 7 ?

Anything show if you right-click it ?

Have you looked thru your Installed programs in Add/Remove, under Control panel ?

Maybe CCleaner could get rid of it, if it is a 'leftover'.

That's a mindblowing number of icons in your tray!

Only a clean install can fix it!

What do you see if you try to customize the tray icons? Is it listed there with a description?

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons

Good lord, that's a lot of icons... :/

It almost looks like my Internet icon on Android (red box for clarification :p ):

Can't say that I've seen it before on a Windows machine though. Have you installed anything recently? Does it appear after a restart? If so, is there any startup program under msconfig that looks out of the ordinary?

With that little green blob on the corner it looks like an online status of some sort.

Try closing all the other programs that give you notifications in the tray, once they're closed have a look at your running processes in the Task Manager, see if any programs stick out that don't look like normal Windows functions.

Looks like planet Earth with a pointer on it. Maybe Google Earth or some kind of location awareness app?

LOL @ your comments, all of you, no shame it's all good.

I remembered what it was, it's Glary Utilities update icon.

Even though I selected not to receive updates it ignored me.

So topic is closed.

^ You should be able to turn off the Update with msconfig, then.

If I can just add:

Right click on taskbar / Properties / Notification area: Customise

That should show any icons and what they are

Not so much RAM usage, more like CPU usage.  But each to their own! :)

Yeah, I'd imagine you'd only need to watch out for stray disk accesses assuming you are running on a spinning magnetic platter (if an ssd, prolly doesn't matter). Those apps should be idling 99% of the time since they are background processes.

Windows Key + R

Type MSCONFIG

Go to Startup Tab

Analyze what is in the list that has a check mark next to it.  Look for anything weird, and uncheck that box.  Should also give the path to the file that is being loaded.  Also, spend some time cleaning up the system tray unless you like all those icons.  Restart and see if the icon is gone.

Also think if you installed anything new recently hardware/software wise.  Would also be a good idea to do a malware check with a couple different programs.
